7 THE 32ND ANNIVERSARY OF THE ORDER OF ST. BARNABAS LAITY CELEBRATION 2018 Dover District Individual Winner Carson Farmer Lay Servant Carson Farmer lovingly exhibits the four measures of St. Barnabas, Target Prayer, Time, Treasure, and Talent. There are 17 worship congregations in the Smyrna area. Centennial United Methodist Church is the only church that is a host sanctuary for Code Purple. The coordinator of our Code Purple Emergency Sanctuary is Lay Servant Carson Farmer. He and Rev. Rudolph H. White, Jr. anoint and pray over the space used by the men seeking shelter from the extreme cold. Carson's prayer is for peace, love, and comfort. He stands ready to pray with any client who desires it. He is always praying for the homeless men. Brother Carson's time is centered on God and our church. He has lived streamed our Noon Hour of Power. Carson always participates in all activities and ministries. Despite his own health problems, he always projects a positive and hopeful attitude. He is a trustee, member of the Music and Youth Ministry and Chair of Men's Day. Carson lives in Wyoming, but is up in Smyrna at 4:00 pm to open Centennial Church doors for our Code Purple volunteers. He schedules the volunteers, oversees meals, receives our homeless guests, organizes materials, and supervises everything. The atmosphere is one of love, comfort, and safety. He also uses his time with the youth. He plans quarterly curriculum for youth Sunday school. His wife, Raquel Farmer, is the Youth Ministry Chair. Together they plan youth programs and workshops including the monthly Friday night Youth Worship Services. He shares his treasures. He pays his tithes. He is not paid as a Code Purple Coordinator. Carson Farmer has actually given the shirt he was wearing to a homeless man. He has given youth neckties and vests. Carson uses his talents. He leads Praise and Worship on Sunday morning. His rich and powerful voice adds to our Sanctuary Choir. Brother Carson teaches Sunday School. He also created and directs the Mime Ministry. It is wonderful for both boys and men to see a male who is not afraid to perform mime for the Lord. Lay Servant Carson Farmer is truly someone who demonstrates the Four Measures of St. Barnabas.

Ministry The Lillian Wharton H.U.G.G.S. Ministry of Whatcoat United Methodist Church (WUMC) in Dover was formed in January 2007, and has been serving the greater Dover community and beyond for eleven years. The purpose of this ministry is to share the love of Jesus Christ with others through the things we create with our hands with love and give away to others. This is a handcraft ministry which has created and given away more than 1,800 items. These items include: crocheted, knitted, quilted and knotted lap robes and blankets, also calico stuffed animal pillows and toys, adult bibs, hats, prayer shawls, throws, dresses and shirts made from pillowcases, toiletry bags and all -purpose bags to attach to walkers. Some of the recipients of our creations have been (but not limited to): adults and children who take part in the Soup Kitchen Ministry at WUMC, the Code Purple Headquarters - which distributes many of our contributions to persons in shelters in the Kent County area, to some persons who are sick, to shut-ins at the Cadia/Capital Rehabilitation Center, Hopes and Dreams facility in Dover, and to Africa, Haiti, and Nicaragua. This ministry is committed to enhancing the quality of life through handcrafted items. They exemplify the essence of the Order of St. Barnabas.

IR , Dec. 14, 2017 WASHINGTON The Internal Revenue Service today issued the 2018 optional standard mileage rates used to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile for business, charitable, medical or moving purposes. Beginning on Jan. 1, 2018, the standard mileage rates for the use of a car (also vans, pickups or panel trucks) will be: 54.5 cents for every mile of business travel driven, up 1 cent from the rate for cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes, up 1 cent from the rate for cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations.

Date Appeal Information 1/14/18 Human Relations Day This Appeal supports the UMC s Community Developers Program, Voluntary Services Program, and Youth Offender Rehabilitation Program. 3/11/18 UMCOR Sunday (formerly called One Great Hour of Sharing) When a catastrophe occurs, your offerings enable the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) to reach out and ease the pain and suffering by providing humanitarian aid of food, shelter, health and peace. 3/18/18 PLRCA Partners of Leadership Resources for Churches in Africa. This Appeal aims to witness to God s hope for a faithful, loving world. 50% of the Appeal is used for these programs within our Annual Conference. 5/6/18 AC Appeal Sunday Receive offering for AC Appeal if not already provided for, 5/31/18-6/02/18 Annual Conference Appeal special-sunday-envelopes-and-posters-kit = free resources for Human Relations Day, UMCOR Sunday, Native American Ministries, Peace With Justice, World Communion, Student Day Churches are encouraged to raise funds in advance and bring them to AC meeting. This year s appeal will support, BOOM Scholarships, the Central Congo Partnership, and Global Migration Offering. There are 65 million displaced persons in the world. This is more than any time since WWII. These millions of migrants include children and their families escaping violence, economic hardship, and other dangerous situations. They seek safety and opportunity in a new land, but are probably unfamiliar with the customs, do not know the language, and may feel unwelcome. The Bible charges God s people with caring for brothers and sisters just like these. In Exodus 22, God commands, Don t mistreat or oppress an immigrant, because you were once immigrants in the land of Egypt (Exodus 22:21). 7/15/18 Deaf Awareness Sunday Provides our churches a Sunday to uplift those with deafness or other hearing problems. Offerings will support the Deaf Ministries within the Annual Conference. 8/12/18 Camp Pecometh Sunday This appeal provides fund for programs at and scholarships to Camp Pecometh. 9/9/18 PD Student Scholarship Sunday This appeal directly benefits Pen-Del students attending college by providing scholarship funds. 10/7/18 World Communion Provides funds for racial & ethnic undergrad scholarships and advance-degree work related to the mission of the UMC. 10/14/18 Disaster/VIM Sunday Funds raised are used for disaster response within the AC and for VIM Team scholarships. 11/4/18 Africa University Sunday Raising costs and a growing student body means every year more scholarships are needed at AU. Your gifts help grow the endowment fund that provides this assistance. A bulletin insert will be provided. 11/25/18 Student Day Provides loans and scholarships to students attending a UM Church affiliated college. 14 The Young People's Ministry Network is a partnership between Pecometh and the Peninsula -Delaware conference that supports ministry with youth and young adults. Join us this summer for a few events and trainings held here at Pecometh! Youth & Family Event: School is winding down and the weather is warming up! Come celebrate the beginning of summer with other children, youth, and families from around the Pen- Del Annual Conference at the Pen-Del Summer Kick-Off held Saturday, June 16 th, at the Picnic Pavilion and Pool. The pool will be open, plus we'll have worship, food and more! This is a FREE event, but registration is requested. Training: Youth Ministry Training will be held Saturday, June 30 th, at the Riverview Retreat Center. This one-day training will offer practical advice and resources for pastors, paid staff, and volunteers doing ministry with youth. The cost is $15/person and includes the sessions as well as lunch. Join us at the Pecometh Riverview Retreat Center July 15 th -20 th for our Summer Silent Retreat and allow your spirit to settle and clear by resting in God. Come experience a daily rhythm of prayer, simple meals, communing with God in nature, communion, and spiritual direction. Cost is per person and ranges from $50 for one day to $449 for 6 days, 5 nights.
