5 How to Use This Book This book could be implemented in the classroom, at home, or in any other situation for which it is appropriate. The teaching aids have been coordinated with the lessons contained in a manual that is used in theyoung Women's classes in the Young Women's organization of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.The lesson books in this organization are used in a three-year rotation pattern. 7 Lesson 1 Gladys Knight, LDS Recording Artist Use this picture and information, if desired, for the discussion at the beginning of the lesson. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Gladys Knight, born May 28, 1944 in Atlanta, Georgia, is a well-known recording artist. She began performing at age four in her Baptist church singing gospel music. She won an award on Ted Mack's Amateur Hour (a 50's TV show similar to American Idol ) for her singing at age seven.at age eight, she and a brother and some cousins formed a group called the Pips. Later she became the lead singer and the group became Gladys Knight and the Pips. With that group Gladys acquired Grammy awards, platinum and gold records, and recognition in two music Halls of Fame. Gladys has been performing for over 50 years, and with her group, the Pips, for almost as long. In August 1997, Gladys became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints, and a year later she went through the temple. Since her conversion she has continued to record and perform. She is a singer, entertainer, songwriter, producer, actress, entrepreneur, and is involved in many humanitarian causes.
