Lesson 12: Important Ordinances are Restored Lesson 12: Important Ordinances Ar e Restored, Pr im ary 5: Doctrine and Covenants: Church History, (1997),57

Purpose To help the children feel gratitude for the privilege of being able to be baptized, be confirmed, and partake of the sacrament.

When I Am Baptized 1. I like to look for rainbows whenever there is rain And ponder on the beauty of an earth made clean again. 2. I know when I am baptized my wrongs are washed away, And I can be forgiven and improve myself each day. Chorus I want my life to be as clean as earth right after rain. I want to be the best I can and live with God again. Words: Nita Dale Milner, b. 1952; adapted IRI Music: Nita Dale Milner, b IRI

Attention Activity Can you find the way from the Gate to Eternal Life?

Attention Activity Here s the path we found.

Attention Activity Life can be like a maze sometimes. We can make many different decisions and follow many different paths, but only one path will lead us to eternal life with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. That path is the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Attention Activity If the path through the maze represents the gospel, what do you think the Gate represents?

Attention Activity Let s read 2 Nephi 31: Wherefore, do the things which I have told you I have seen that your Lord and your Redeemer should do; for, for this cause have they been shown unto me, that ye might know the gate by which ye should enter. For the gate by which ye should enter is repentance and baptism by water; and then cometh a remission of your sins by fire and by the Holy Ghost.

Attention Activity Baptism into the church of Jesus Christ is the gate that starts us on the path to eternal life.

Attention Activity What do we receive after we are baptized that helps us make right choices and stay on the path to eternal life?

Attention Activity What do we receive after we are baptized that helps us make right choices and stay on the path to eternal life? The gift of the Holy Ghost

Attention Activity What do we do each week that helps us remember the important ordinances of baptism and confirmation?

Attention Activity What do we do each week that helps us remember the important ordinances of baptism and confirmation? Partake of the sacrament

Attention Activity After the Apostasy, the gospel of Jesus Christ was no longer on the earth.

Attention Activity The priesthood was not on the earth either, so no one could properly be baptized, be confirmed, or partake of the sacrament.

Attention Activity The gospel and the priesthood had to be restored in the latter days.

This is what our lesson is about today

Lesson 12: Important Ordinances are Restored Lesson 12: Important Ordinances Ar e Restored, Pr im ary 5: Doctrine and Covenants: Church History, (1997),57

When the priesthood was restored, men who held it were able to baptize, confirm, and bless and pass the sacrament..

This was the first time since the Apostasy that these ordinances had been done with the proper authority.

Jesus also taught the people about baptism. He said they must be baptized to become members of His Church. Those who want to be baptized must repent. They must love and obey Jesus. They must also be at least eight years old.

Jesus taught the right way to baptize. He said a priest in the Aaronic Priesthood or a man who has the Melchizedek Priesthood may baptize a person. The man takes the person into the water and says a special prayer.

The man who is baptizing puts the person down under the water. Then he brings the person out of the water.

When people are baptized, they promise to obey Jesus. They also promise to say and do good things.

Jesus told about blessing babies. Men who have the Melchizedek Priesthood can bless babies. The men hold the baby in their arms, and one man gives the baby a name and a blessing.

Jesus told about the sacrament. He said we should take the sacrament often. But if we do something bad, we should not take the sacrament until we have repented.

We take the sacrament to remember Jesus. The bread helps us think of His body. He died for us on the cross.

The water helps us think of the blood of Jesus. We remember that he suffered and bled for us in the Garden of Gethsemane.

We make covenants when we take the sacrament. A covenant is a promise. We promise that we will try to be like Jesus

We also promise to obey His commandments. If we keep our covenants, we are promised that His Spirit will be with us.

On 6 April 1830, Joseph held a meeting to organize the Church.

Oliver Cowdery, Hyrum Smith, Samuel Smith, David Whitmer, and Peter Whitmer came to help him.

They had all been baptized. Other people also came to the meeting.

Joseph and Oliver put their hands on each man s head to confirm him a member of the Church of Jesus Christ and give him the gift of the Holy Ghost.

After the meeting, many people were baptized, including Joseph Smith s mother and father.

What a wonderful day! The Church of Jesus Christ was on the earth again.

After a few weeks, there were 27 members of the Church. They did not all live in the same town. Joseph Smith asked them to come to a conference, which is a special meeting for all the Saints.

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ are called Saints.

The Saints had the sacrament at the conference. Some men were ordained to the priesthood. The Holy Ghost blessed the Saints, and they were very happy.

Some people had already been baptized into other churches, and they wondered why it was necessary to be baptized again. Joseph inquired of the Lord and received the revelation recorded in Doctrine and Covenants 22.

In this revelation the Lord explained that the people who had been baptized into other churches had not been baptized by someone with the proper priesthood authority, so they needed to be baptized again by someone who did have the authority.

Some other people who attended the conference were not members of the Church. They learned about the gospel and wanted to join the Church, so they were baptized.

After the conference, Joseph Smith went to another town. Some people there also wanted to be baptized. Joseph said they could be baptized in a nearby stream.

The people built a small dam in the stream to make the water deep enough to perform baptisms. In the night, some people destroyed the dam.

The dam was rebuilt, and Oliver Cowdery began to baptize people. Soon a mob came. A mob is a group of mean people. They said bad things and tried to hurt the Saints, but the Lord kept the people safe.

The mob continued trying to make trouble for the Church. They told lies about Joseph Smith and had him arrested.

At a trial, they found people to give false testimony against the Prophet. But many other people told the truth about Joseph, proving the words of the enemies to be false.

Joseph was released, but almost immediately he was arrested again by people from a nearby county. While he was imprisoned, people spit on him and would not give him food. Another trial was held, and Joseph was again found innocent and was released.

Meanwhile, the Saints in Colesville had been praying that Joseph would be safe and would be able to return and confirm them as members of the Church.

At the end of August, Joseph and Oliver Cowdery returned with some other men to Colesville.

On the way they came upon a large group of men working on the road.

Some of these men were enemies of the Prophet, but although they looked closely at the Prophet and his friends, the men did not recognize any of them and allowed them to pass by.

Because of this miracle, Joseph arrived safely in Colesville, and the members there were able to be confirmed and partake of the sacrament.

Earlier in August, Joseph had planned a small meeting to confirm his wife, Emma, and another woman.

When Joseph went to get wine for the sacrament, he was met by an angel.

The angel told him not to buy wine from his enemies (see D&C 27:3).

The angel also told him that it did not matter what was eaten or drunk in the sacrament as long as those who were partaking remembered Christ s atonement (see D&C 27:2).

Discussion Time

Why are we baptized?

Why are we baptized? For remission of our sins and to become members of the church of Jesus Christ; see D&C 20:37

What must we do to prepare to be baptized? (D&C 20:37.)

If we truly repent and are baptized, what are we promised regarding our sins?

If we truly repent and are baptized, what are we promised regarding our sins? They will be forgiven; see D&C 58:42.

What authority, or priesthood, is necessary to perform baptisms? (JS H 1:69.)

How did Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery receive this priesthood? (JS H 1:68 71.)

Why were baptisms done in other churches not accepted by the Lord? (D&C 22.)

After we have been baptized, how are we confirmed? (D&C 20:41.) What priesthood authority is necessary for this ordinance? (JS H 1:70, 72.)

When we are confirmed as members of the Church, what gift do we receive? How must we live to remain worthy of the gift of the Holy Ghost?

Why do you think Joseph Smith was joyful when his parents were baptized? Why are you grateful you were baptized into the true church of Jesus Christ?

How did the enemies of the Church try to prevent the Saints in Colesville from being baptized? What kept the newly baptized Saints from being confirmed the same day? How was Joseph Smith protected from the mob?

Why do you think many Saints were willing to face dangers in order to be baptized and confirmed? How do you think they felt when they were baptized and confirmed? How do you feel when you do what is right?

What did the angel tell Joseph Smith about what we should use for the sacrament? (D&C 27:2). What do we use today? (See the section heading to D&C 27.) What should we remember when we partake of the sacrament? (D&C 27:2.)

What did the angel tell Joseph Smith about what we should use for the sacrament? (D&C 27:2). What do we use today? (See the section heading to D&C 27.) What should we remember when we partake of the sacrament? (D&C 27:2.)

When we partake of the sacrament bread, what do we promise to do? (D&C 20:77.) What does it mean to take upon us the name of Jesus Christ?

What does it mean to always remember him? How do you remember Jesus during the week?

How does partaking of the sacrament remind us of the covenants we made when we were baptized?

Enrichment Activities T

Enrichment Activity 2 It is important to continue to obey the commandments after you are baptized. (see 2 Nephi 31:17 20). T

Enrichment Activity 2 We are going to display a list of things that show ways you can stay on that straight and narrow path as well as ways that can lead you a stray or away from that path. Your job is to identify which list these things belong too. T

Enrichment Activity 2 Obeying the commandments and doing what Jesus Christ wants us to do will help us prepare to live with him and Heavenly Father eternally. T

Enrichment Activity 1 Let s Read Mosiah 18: And it came to pass that he said unto them: Behold, here are the waters of Mormon (for thus were they called) and now, as ye are desirous to come into the fold of God, and to be called his people, and are willing to bear one another s burdens, that they may be light; T

Enrichment Activity 1 9 Yea, and are willing to mourn with those that mourn; yea, and comfort those that stand in need of comfort, and to stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all things, and in all places that ye may be in, even until death, that ye may be redeemed of God, and be numbered with those of the first resurrection, that ye may have eternal life T

Enrichment Activity 1 10 Now I say unto you, if this be the desire of your hearts, what have you against being baptized in the name of the Lord, as a witness before him that ye have entered into a covenant with him, that ye will serve him and keep his commandments, that he may pour out his Spirit more abundantly upon you? T

Enrichment Activity 1 Now Let s Read Doctrine and Covenants 20:37 37 And again, by way of commandment to the church concerning the manner of baptism All those who humble themselves before God, and desire to be baptized, and come forth with broken hearts and contrite spirits, and witness before the church that they have truly repented of all their sins, and are willing to take upon them the name of Jesus Christ, having a determination to serve him to the end, and truly manifest by their works that they have received of the Spirit of Christ unto the remission of their sins, shall be received by baptism into his T church.

Enrichment Activity 1 We witness (promise) at baptism that we will: Serve others. Keep the commandments. Stand as witnesses of God at all times. Take upon us the name of Jesus Christ. T

Enrichment Activity 1 Let s Discuss what it means to: Serve Others T

Enrichment Activity 1 Let s Discuss what it means to: Keep the Commandments T

Enrichment Activity 1 Let s Discuss what it means to: Stand as witnesses of God at all times T

Enrichment Activity 1 Let s Discuss what it means to: Take upon us the name of Jesus Christ T

Enrichment Activity 1 Let s read Doctine and Covenants 20:77,79 Listen to the prayers and raise your hands whenever you hear a covenant mentioned that is the same as or similar to one we make at baptism T

Enrichment Activity 1 77 O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this bread to the souls of all those who partake of it, that they may eat in remembrance of the body of thy Son, and witness unto thee, O God, the Eternal Father, that they are willing to take upon them the name of thy Son, and always remember him and keep his commandments which he has given them; that they may always have his Spirit to be with them. Amen. T

Enrichment Activity 1 79 O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this wine to the souls of all those who drink of it, that they may do it in remembrance of the blood of thy Son, which was shed for them; that they may witness unto thee, O God, the Eternal Father, that they do always remember him, that they may have his Spirit to be with them. Amen. T

Enrichment Activity 1 When you listen to the sacrament hymn and the sacrament prayers, it can help you to remember the promises you made when you were baptized. T

Enrichment Activity 3 Let s read Doctrine and Covenants 37 And again, by way of commandment to the church concerning the manner of baptism All those who humble themselves before God, and desire to be baptized, and come forth with broken hearts and contrite spirits, and witness before the church that they have truly repented of all their sins, and are willing to take upon them the name of Jesus Christ, having a determination to serve him to the end, and truly manifest by their works that they have received of the Spirit of Christ unto the remission of their sins, shall be received by baptism into his T church.

Enrichment Activity 3 What are some of the characteristics of a person who is ready to be baptized. Is humble Has a broken heart Has a contrite spirit Is willing to take upon himself or herself the name of Jesus Christ Is repentant Is determined to serve the Lord until the end Shows by works he or she is sincere T

Enrichment Activity 3 Let s discuss these characteristics and how we can continue to develop them after we are baptized. I want to encourage you to read and think about Doctrine and Covenants 20:37 during the week to help you prepare to take the sacrament. T

Enrichment Activity 4 Where was Jesus Christ baptized? Where were you baptized? T

Enrichment Activity 4 People today are baptized in baptismal fonts filled with warm, clear water. T

Enrichment Activity 4 But people can be baptized anywhere there is enough water to completely immerse a person. T

Enrichment Activity 4 Today as well as in times past, people have been baptized in streams, lakes, oceans, water tanks, and swimming pools. T

Enrichment Activity 4 Joseph Smith was baptized in a river, and many other Presidents of the Church were baptized in streams, ponds, or canals. T

Enrichment Activity 4 Howard W. Hunter was baptized in a swimming pool. T

Enrichment Activity 4 Does it matter where a person is baptized? What is important about how a person is baptized? T

Enrichment Activity 4 It is important to be baptized by immersion by a person with the proper priesthood authority, regardless of where one is baptized. T

Enrichment Activity 5 Many people, who desire to be baptized face challenges. Sometimes people do not have the support of their families and friends. T

Enrichment Activity 5 In some countries where the Church is just starting to grow, it can be difficult to find a place to baptize people. Listen to the following story of one such case. T

In the Republic of Kenya, Africa, Church members had to make many preparations to hold baptisms. They brought a water tank from a neighboring country. They spent five hours pumping water from a well and carrying it to the church building, which was four miles from the well. The level of the water in the tank was not high enough to completely immerse the person being baptized, so ten people stood inside the font to raise the level of the water. Enrichment Activity 5 T

Enrichment Activity 6 Let s see who can memorize the fourth article of faith. 4 We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost. T

Testimony I want to express my feelings of gratitude for the ordinances of baptism, confirmation, and the sacrament and for the blessings you receive because of these ordinances. It is through these ordinances that we can follow that straight and narrow path that leads us back to our heavenly father.

JS H 1: We still continued the work of translation, when, in the ensuing month (May, 1829), we on a certain day went into the woods to pray and inquire of the Lord respecting baptism for the remission of sins, that we found mentioned in the translation of the plates. While we were thus employed, praying and calling upon the Lord, a messenger from heaven descended in a cloud of light, and having laid his hands upon us, he ordained us, saying:

JS H 1: Upon you my fellow servants, in the name of Messiah, I confer the Priesthood of Aaron, which holds the keys of the ministering of angels, and of the gospel of repentance, and of baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; and this shall never be taken again from the earth until the sons of Levi do offer again an offering unto the Lord in righteousness.

JS H 1: He said this Aaronic Priesthood had not the power of laying on hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost, but that this should be conferred on us hereafter; and he commanded us to go and be baptized, and gave us directions that I should baptize Oliver Cowdery, and that afterwards he should baptize me.

JS H 1: Accordingly we went and were baptized. I baptized him first, and afterwards he baptized me after which I laid my hands upon his head and ordained him to the Aaronic Priesthood, and afterwards he laid his hands on me and ordained me to the same Priesthood for so we were commanded. 144 JS H 1:70, The messenger who visited us on this occasion and conferred this Priesthood upon us, said that his name was John, the same that is called John the Baptist in the New Testament, and that he acted under the direction of Peter, James and John, who held the keys of the Priesthood of Melchizedek, which Priesthood, he said, would in due time be conferred on us, and that I should be called the first Elder of the Church, and he (Oliver Cowdery) the second. 149 2 Nephi 31: Wherefore, do the things which I have told you I have seen that your Lord and your Redeemer should do; for, for this cause have they been shown unto me, that ye might know the gate by which ye should enter. For the gate by which ye should enter is repentance and baptism by water; and then cometh a remission of your sins by fire and by the Holy Ghost.

2 Nephi 31: And then are ye in this strait and narrow path which leads to eternal life; yea, ye have entered in by the gate; ye have done according to the commandments of the Father and the Son; and ye have received the Holy Ghost, which witnesses of the Father and the Son, unto the fulfilling of the promise which he hath made, that if ye entered in by the way ye should receive.

2 Nephi 31: And now, my beloved brethren, after ye have gotten into this strait and narrow path, I would ask if all is done? Behold, I say unto you, Nay; for ye have not come thus far save it were by the word of Christ with unshaken faith in him, relying wholly upon the merits of him who is mighty to save.

2 Nephi 31: Wherefore, ye must press forward with a steadfastness in Christ, having a perfect brightness of hope, and a love of God and of all men. Wherefore, if ye shall press forward, feasting upon the word of Christ, and endure to the end, behold, thus saith the Father: Ye shall have eternal life. Return
