5 How to Use This Book This book could be implemented in the classroom, at home, or in any other situation for which it is appropriate. The teaching aids have been coordinated with the lessons contained in a manual that is used in the Young Women's classes in the Young Women's organization of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The lesson books in this organization are used in a three-year rotation pattern. 17 Lesson 7 - Our purpose in Life Make copies of these instructions for all the girls in your class. 5 WAYS TO LEARN OUR PURPOSE IN LIFE 1. PERSONAL PRAYER We can talk to our Father and ask him what he would have us do. Spencer W. Kimball said, It would not hurt us, either, if we paused at the end of our prayers to do some intense listening even for a moment or two always praying as the savior did, 'not my will, but thine, be done' (Luke 22:42) (Conference Report, Oct. 1979, p.5) 2. STUDY AND MEDITATION Prayerfully reading the scriptures can help us understand what the Lord wants us to do. The scriptures tell us the commandments of God, which we should all follow. We can often use the scriptures to find answers to our particular situations. Many of the scriptures were given to help individuals understand what the Lord wanted them to do. Still, today, their advice from the Lord can apply to us. D&C section 121 is a prayer Joseph Smith said when he was in Liberty jail. Verses 7 & 8 contain part of the Lord's answer. 3. GIFT OF THE HOLY GHOST As members of the Church, we have all received the Holy Ghost. He is one of our greatest guides in understanding what the Lord wants us to do here on Earth. He will prompt and direct us throughout our lives. Thomas S. Monson says, Be influenced by that still, small voice. Remember that one with authority placed his hands on your head an the time of your confirmation and said, 'Receive the Holy Ghost. Open your hearts, even your very souls, to the sound of that special voice which testifies of truth. As the prophet Isaiah promised, 'Thine ears shall hear a word... saying, This is the way, walk ye in it' (30:21) ( The Lighthouse of the Lord, New Era, July 1980, p.19) 4. PRIESTHOOD BLESSINGS You can ask your father, home teachers, or other priesthood leaders for a blessing when you need help or direction. The Lord may inspire these priesthood holders to speak words of guidance and comfort. 5. PATRIARCHAL BLESSINGS As a worthy member of the church, you are entitled to a patriarchal blessing, which is given from the Lord to you individually. When you receive a patriarchal blessing, you are told many of the blessings Heavenly Father has in store for you in this life and in eternity. These blessings will be yours if you live a true and faithful life. They can identify your spiritual gifts. They sometimes warn us to avoid things that will tempt us. By knowing your promised blessings, warnings, and spiritual gifts, you can more wisely make decisions throughout your life. 19 Lesson 9 - Encouraging Family Unity SITUATION EXAMPLES Copy, cut apart, and distribute. Ask the girls to read their examples and suggest possible ways they could contribute to family unity in the situation. 1. Your brother has started smoking, and your parents have asked for your help. You are embarrassed about your brother's habits. 2. Your brother is serving a mission and depends on financial support from the family. 3. Your mother is away from home during the day, and your younger brothers and sisters often argue when they come home from school. 4. Your sister has a disability and needs special help. 5. Your father followed the prophet's counsel and planted a garden this spring. 6. Family night at your house is something no one looks forward to, including you. Nobody wants to participate in the lesson, and everyone leaves as soon as possible. 20 Lesson 10 - Encouraging Enjoyable Family Activities FAMILY FUN SACK Family Fun Sack - Make family fun sacks for your lesson and bring enough paper bags for each girl to make a sack of her own. Copy the label below and distribute enough for each girl. Supply paper for them to note the ideas for family activities mentioned during the lesson. Family members develop greater love and understanding for each other as they learn more about each other's interests. Each family member's tastes and interests are valid. Use the pattern below to make one as an example and explain what materials are needed. Family members can write down or draw activities they like to do and put them in the sack, or items for an activity could be placed in the sack. A SPECIAL FAMILY PROCLAMATION - CENTERFOLD PATTERN To give an interesting, personal touch to the Family Proclamation, use family snapshots to collage a mat before you frame it. The mats will fit an 11"X14" frame. We have included a pattern in the centerfold of this book. (Frames may be available for purchase with a mat included or mats can be purchased separately). Use 8" X 10" copies of the proclamation for each girl. Carefully cut card stock or poster board into 11" X 14" sections. Measure and cut out a 7 ½ X 9 ½ rectangle from the center of each section with an exacto knife and a metal ruler, or straight edge, to make the mat. Instruct the girls to use 4 X 5 family snapshots to collage the mat by cutting pictures to desired shapes to fit the mat and, possibly overlap. You may be able to collect photos from the girls or their parents, and have them scanned and printed on a color printer, or color copied, so the girls can cut them to fit more easily. 18

26 A FATHER'S RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Fathers are to be the heads of their homes in the way the Lord instructed (D&C 121:41-45). 2. Fathers have the responsibility to physically provide for and protect their families. (D&C 83:2,4-5) 3. Fathers love their children and teach them the gospel (D&C 68:25-28). 4. Fathers who hold the priesthood have the right and responsibility to: Give blessings of comfort to their wife and children. Administer to the sick in their families.
