4 How to Use This Book This book could be implemented in Primary, at home, or in any other situation for which it is appropriate. The teaching aids have been coordinated with the Valiant lessons in the book to be used to teach about the Old Testament in the Primary organization of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. All contents of this book are for the purpose of giving ideas and suggestions only; decide for yourself through scripture study and prayer if you wish to use these materials, and if so, how you will implement them. Instead, copy the pages onto regular or heavyweight paper, either white or colored, and save the book to use again. If the project needs to be mounted, it can be glued onto heavy paper with regular glue or spray glue. If desired, cover figures with clear Contact paper or laminate. Usually when cutting items out, it is best to leave a narrow white margin all around. Prepare with flannel, magnets, or Velcro for use with flannelboard, magnet board, or velcro board. In most cases, simple supplies are all you will need: scissors, crayons, markers, paste, and fasteners such as tape, stapler, brads, string, or yarn. To make an enlargement, use an opaque projector. If you don t have ready access to one, ask at a local school. Often it is possible to borrow an item or use it on the premises. Use a darkened room and back up to make the image larger, get closer to make smaller. Focus with the lens to sharpen the image. Project the image onto a large piece of paper such as posterboard and trace the image. Go over the lines later with markers or other media. You may have to use a ruler and/or T-square to get the lines straight. The best images to enlarge have sharp, clean, dark lines and shapes. 5 Lesson 1 - DRAW QUESTIONS Copy and cut out. Fold in half and put into a container. Have children take turns drawing questions and answering them. Divide into teams if desired. When was Joseph Smith born? Where was he born? Tell where Joseph went to pray. Why did he want to be alone? What happened at first when Joseph began to pray? What was the source of the darkness? Why did Satan want to stop Joseph from praying? Does Satan try to stop us from doing right? Tell what Heavenly Father said to Joseph in the first vision. What did Joseph learn about Heavenly Father and Jesus? What did the pastors and other people think about Joseph s vision? Why did this surprise him? Name three of Joseph s brothers and sisters. Give the names of his father and mother. How did Joseph feel about choosing a church to join? How did the scriptures help him? Which force was greater, the power of Satan or the power of God? Why is it important for us to remember this? Who appeared to Joseph in the first vision? Describe these personages. What church was Joseph told to join? Why? 71 Lesson 46 - GROWING A TESTIMONY Alma 32:36-39 Behold I say unto you, Nay; neither must ye lay aside your faith, for ye have only exercised your faith to plant the seed that ye might try the experiment to know if the seed was good. And behold, as the tree beginneth to grow, ye will say: Let us nourish it with great care, that it may get root, that it may grow up, and bring forth fruit unto us. And now behold, if ye nourish it with much care it will get root, and grow up, and bring forth fruit. But if ye neglect the tree, and take no thought for its nourishment, behold it will not get any root; and when the heat of the sun cometh and scorcheth it, because it hath no root it withers away, and ye pluck it up and cast it out. Now, this is not because the seed was not good, neither is it because the fruit thereof would not be desirable; but it is because your ground is barren, and ye will not nourish the tree, therefore ye cannot have the fruit thereof. We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost. 2. We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam's transgression. 3. We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel. 4. We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost. 5. We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof. 6. We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth. 7. We believe in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth. 8. We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God. 9. We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God. 10. We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory. 11. We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may. 12. We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law. 13. We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul--We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things.
