Instead, copy the pages onto regular or heavyweight paper, either white or colored, and save the book to use again. If the project needs to be mounted, it can be glued onto heavy paper with regular glue or spray glue. If desired, cover figures with clear adhesive plastic or laminate them. Usually when cutting items out, it is best to leave a narrow white margin all around. Prepare with flannel, magnets, or Velcro for use with flannelboard, magnet board, or Velcro board. In most cases, simple supplies are all you will need: scissors, crayons, markers, paste, and fasteners such as tape, stapler, brads, string, or yarn. To make an enlargement, use an opaque projector. If you don't have ready access to one, ask at a local school. Often it is possible to borrow an item or use it on the premises. Use a darkened room and back up to make the image larger, get closer to make smaller. Focus with the lens to sharpen the image. Project the image onto a large piece of paper such as posterboard and trace the image. Go over the lines later with markers or other media. You may have to use a ruler and/or T-square to get the lines straight. The best images to enlarge have sharp, clean, dark lines and shapes. 6 Some visual aids are in the form of paper bag puppets, which should be assembled as shown at right. A small "Fold-A-Book" is included in this book. To use, copy and cut out along outline. Fold in half vertically and slit along solid line running down middle. Next, fold horizontally in half and in half again. Unfold and refold as shown. Open slit and fold so back halves touch, and assemble so front cover and back cover form book covers. Small children will need adults to cut out and fold these books for them. Tell the story of the brother of Jared with Gospel Art Kit picture 318, and use a clear glass stonelike object (such as melted glass or a large crystal) if possible. 10 MY OWN ARMOR OF GOD Cut out cards and stick on the wall with putty adhesive. Make additional cards using the blanks or your own 3 x5 cards. Make armor using such materials as cardboard, paper bags, and foil, and let children dress up. Have children answer questions on cards, and if they answer correctly, allow them to stick the cards onto their armor. When finished, give children scissors, glue, and crayons, and let each child color, cut out, and glue their own Armor of God onto a piece of paper. What would I do if my friends were teasing another child and making her cry? What would I do if someone gave me a gift of immodest or inappropriate clothing? 14 PROPHETS & APOSTLES MATCHING GAME If possible, obtain large pictures of each member of the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Write their names onto wordstrips and place on the wall, with space to post the pictures. Ask children if they can identify each person, and post pictures of those they recognize. Chances are, children will not know many of the Apostles by sight. Say the names of the remaining Apostles and post each picture by their name. Discuss each Beatitude, let children draw an example of someone observing one of the principles in The Beatitudes and post their picture beside a favorite one. 31 PRAYER LANGUAGE Talk about the respectful language of prayer. Read Matthew 6:9-13 and talk about the Lord's Prayer. Use wordstrips to explain how we should pray and why we pray this way. 32 DANIEL IN THE LIONS' DEN Copy and prepare several paper bag puppets ahead of time using instructions on page 3. You will need one Daniel and several lions. Read Daniel 6. Tell children the story of Daniel in the lion's den, using picture 117 from the Gospel Art Kit. 35 LIKENING THE SCRIPTURES Give children each a handout and a pencil. Talk about the concept of likening scriptures unto ourselves. Have children insert their own names in the blanks and repeat the scriptures. Sing Nephi's Courage (Children's Songbook, 120). 36 GOSPEL SONGS Copy the puzzle below onto heavy paper, or mount on heavy paper. Color and cut apart to make puzzle, and write the following song numbers from the Children's Songbook on the backs of the pieces: 14, 98, 99, 106, 109, 146, or others of your choosing. Hide the pieces under chairs and/or around the room. 37 QUEEN ESTHER Have someone prepare to portray Esther by using the scriptures and the information on the back of Gospel Art Kit picture 125. Have the person dress up and tell the story of Esther. 38 THE LIAHONA Show the picture of the Liahona found in the Gospel Art Kit (302). Read the following scriptures and have children tell why the Liahona stopped working each time. Talk about the reasons why the Liahona would or would not work. Explain that when we listen to the words of Christ, follow the prophet, and listen to the Holy Ghost we are guided to choose the right. Have children color the picture and have older children write what they will do to have the Holy Ghost with them. 39 LATTER-DAY PROPHETS MATCHING GAME Copy handouts for each child and distribute along with a pencil or crayons. Using Gospel Art Kit pictures or others you obtain, post the pictures in the front of the room. Help children match the names of the prophets on the wordstrips with the pictures. Tell a little bit about each prophet, using the backs of the pictures from the Gospel Art Kit. Let the children draw lines matching the names and faces of the prophets on their handouts. 1. 43 PARTS OF A MISSIONARY For this activity, ask the full-time missionaries to come to Primary or to your home. If they are not available, have one or two men or boys dress up like missionaries and play the parts. Prepare the wordstrips ahead of time and use tape or safety pins to attach them. Attach the wordstrips directly to the missionaries and talk about each Missionary Part. Have the missionaries talk about being a missionary, how each child can help with missionary work, and how to prepare for a mission. The children could ask questions also. Hand out the pictures along with crayons or other media and let the children color them. Older children could write what they will do to be a missionary now on the picture with a pencil. NATIVITY PLAY & PICTURE Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. For this activity you will need several towels or pieces of cloth for headdresses, some stretchy headbands or smaller pieces of cloth to tie around children's heads, some bathrobes and sashes, some paper crowns, and three small fancy-looking gifts. For angels, use white fabric or robes. If you wish to include animals as children s parts, find pieces of fake fur or make pictures or signs to hang around the necks of the children playing the parts. You may want to indicate some areas as places by making cardboard sets, draping fabric, or making signs to indicate the place. Indicate the inn, the stable, and the place where the shepherds were. Assign the following parts according to the number of children participating: Narrator Mary Joseph Innkeeper Shepherds (3 or more) Angels (3 or more) Wise men (3) Donkey (for travel to Bethlehem and flight into Egypt) Sheep (3 or more) Other animals (cattle in the stable, camels for the wise men, etc.) Props needed: Fabric for swaddling clothes Baby doll to be the baby Jesus Box, basket, or manger Canes (shepherd's crooks) Dress children according to their parts. Using Luke 2:1-17 and Matthew 2:1-13, have a narrator read the scriptures while the children act out the story with the help of one or more adults. If desired, have the children sing songs during the story. Appropriate songs can be found in the Children's Songbook. If the children do not already know these songs, make copies and give them to the children so they can hear them and get their message, or have someone sing them. You may wish to include songs from the Hymn book also. 53 WHAT GIFT CAN I GIVE? Make enough copies of the scripture strips for each child. You will also need lunch bags for children to decorate, along with decorating materials (such as crayons, markers, and stickers). Explain that Jesus Christ gave us many wonderful gifts, so today we will give Him a special gift. Ask the children: What do you think Jesus would want for a gift from us? Treat all suggestions seriously, then read them the scripture: 3 Nephi 9:20. Ask: What does having a broken heart mean? (sorrow for sins), a contrite spirit (not wanting to sin again)? Jesus Christ wants us to accept His atonement for our sins by repenting. Give children scripture strips. Have them write or draw how they will give Christ a broken heart and a contrite spirit on the scripture strip. Give them the lunch bags and let them decorate the bag to put their scripture strips in to keep in a prominent place as a reminder. 3 Nephi 9:20 And ye shall offer for a sacrifice unto me a broken heart and a contrite spirit.
