1 General Orders #3 Series Orchard Drive May 2016 Mattawan, MI Dear Sisters; How can I thank you all for one of the most amazing times of my life! This year as your National President has been a year of learning, fellowship and adventures. I have met so many Sisters who are enthusiastically dedicated to our organization! I traveled to Texas to visit with Sisters in one of our Detached Tents. I had the privilege of attending the Department of Georgia's first Department Convention. It was a milestone for the Department. I attended the Department Conventions for Nebraska, Kansas, as well as Michigan. With all the traveling, it was good to be home with my Michigan Sisters who have been my greatest support in this journey. We were very fortunate to have Past National President Celestine Hollings in attendance at our Department Convention. What a thrill for me! She has been the role model for my entire membership in the Daughters. Each Department and Detached Tent I have visited has shown such warmth and hospitality. I have felt a part of each one. For that, I am grateful! Several more visits are scheduled and I look forward to meeting many more Sisters! Thank you to all the Sisters who offered advice and support. I could never have done this job without you! The National Convention is coming soon. I encourage each of you to attend as we celebrate the 150 th Anniversary of the founding of the GAR. Lots of great plans have been made by our hostesses in Springfield, Illinois. You ll have the opportunity to visit our National Headquarters and Library to see how impressive they both are! The Convention is an amazing experience and a lot of fun!! My National President's Project has been very successful! Many of you have purchased the pins in support of our Scholarship Program for Gallaudet University. I still have a few pins left and will have them at the Convention to purchase. Thank you for your generosity!! I am so proud to represent this organization as your National President. I have made friendships that will last a lifetime. Thank you for the trust you have placed in me. I look forward to seeing you at National Convention!! In Fraternity, Charity and Loyalty, Sally Redinger, National President

9 Grand Army of the Republic s Stain Glass Window At the 82 nd National Convention a large stained glass panel of the Grand Army of the Republic badge from a Maine GAR Memorial Hall was offered to the organization by Ruth Jordan, PNP. Sister Ruth and her husband Carl transported the window on top of their station wagon from Maine to Springfield, Illinois. The window came from the Bosworth Post 2, Portland, Maine. The window was in very poor condition and continued to deteriorate over the years. Lesley Dean, PNP, while National President, President s Project was to raise funds for the stain glass window to be restored. Later, Barbara Stone, PNP, during her presidency also adopted the stain glass window as a project. A very costly process, the Board of Trustees under Ozzie Thompson, PNP, bit the bullet and using their funds made the restoration a reality. The restored stain glass panel resides in a special backlit cabinet that shows off the extraordinary colors of the stain glass. At the bottom of the panel one sees the name O. R. LeGrow, named for Orin Rand LeGrow. LeGrow was born in Windham, Maine, September 22, 1835, and enlisted as a Private in the 7 th Battery, on December 22, He mustered out as a Corporal. LeGrow, a successful lumber dealer, civic leader and a member of the GAR Bosworth Post 2, died on May 25, 1889 at the age of 53. He was honored by his comrades by the placement of this window in the Post. We too continue to honor LeGrow and all GAR members with the restoration of this window, as so few exist today. With the 150 th anniversary of the founding of the Grand Army of the Republic this year, we wanted to honor Sisters Lesley and Barbara by placing their names on a special brass plaque to be mounted on the cabinet that houses this gorgeous piece of history. We also want to offer each of you an opportunity to have your name engraved on this brass plaque by making one of the following donations to the Board s ongoing restoration fund. There are four (4) levels of recognition for the brass plaque: Platinum - $1, and more Gold - $ to $ Silver - $ to $ Bronze - $ $ The cutoff date for contributions for the brass plaque is August 1 st. Be sure to provide your name as you want it to appear on the plaque. Any and all contributions would be most appreciated. View this beautiful stain glass vibrant colors on the Members Only webpage, under General Orders, Series , #3 May Please make your check payable to DUVCW and in the memo line write Stain Glass and mail your check to: Susan Nitzel P.O. Bells were rung simultaneously at several locations across the state honoring the men of the G.A.R. The Grand Army of the Republic was a Veterans Organization founded on April 6, 1866 by Benjamin F. Stephenson, with its membership being composed of Honorably Discharged Veterans of the Union Army, Navy, Marine Corps or the Revenue Cutter Service who served between April 12, 1861 and April 9, We wish to thank those who attended to honor the G.A.R. and all veterans who serve and have served. (Article submitted by Caren Cleaveland) MARY MORRIS HUSBAND TENT 58, PHILADELPHIA SPONSORS CARPENTER S MATE 2 ND CLASS ADOLPH LOWE HOMETOWN HEROES BANNER PROGRAM Adolph Lowe served in both the Civil War and in World War I. It sounds remarkable and quite frankly it is. According to his military record, Carpenter s Mate 2 nd Class Adolph Lowe served in the Civil War from March 7, 1861 to June 29, 1864 then again from February 18, 1865 to July 24, During his service he was stationed on the USS Ottowa and the USS Seminole. Although unconfirmed, it is also believed that he served on the USS Monitor during the war. As amazing as it sounds, 52 years after being honorably discharged from the Civil War, Adolph Lowe enlisted in World War I. He reportedly volunteered in Lynn Haven, VA recruiting office. Having passed the physical exam at the ripe old age of 77, the recruiter let him enlist. Adolph served stateside from December 19, 1917 until May 25, He wasn t the only Patriot in his family, his son and two grandsons also served in WWI. It is believed that Adolph is only one of two Veterans who can claim the distinction of serving in both wars. Shortly after WWI, Mr. Lowe settled down in Lansdale, PA. He was interviewed in the local paper in 1919 where he recounted his past. Eventually he moved to Philadelphia where he died in Adolph Lowe pictured with his grandson For his remarkable achievement, Tent 58 has sponsored Carpenter s Mate 2nd Class Adolph Lowe in the Lansdale Borough s Hometown Heroes Banner program. It is known for its ocean views of the Atlantic and its artistic shops. They were walking up the street when the future DUVCW duv (Sister Linda s granddaughter) started to fuss. Stopping, we tended to the baby, when I looked up at an old white-washed building. The date on the building was In large print were the letters "GAR." I did not know that at one time there had been a GAR post. Unfortunately, we could not enter the building as it is a private residence. But the fact the building still stood is remarkable. The Memorial Hall was originally O. W. Wallace Post 106, chartered on December 30, 1881 with 35 men and surrendered its charter in (Article written by Linda Manning, Cornelia Hancock Tent 91, President.) 25 MARY CHESEBRO LEE DETACHED TENT 23, DELAVAN, WI HOLIDAY LUNCH & SESQUICENTENNIAL RECOGNITION Sisters from Tent 23 joined members of the Delavan Historical Society for a holiday lunch at the Village Supper Club, Saturday, December 5. Special holiday entertainment was provided by the Delavan-Darien High School Lydian Choir. Many unwrapped gifts were collected for the Santas for Seniors program who delivered them to local nursing homes and assisted care facilities, Walworth County. Due to the potential inclement winter weather, no Tent meetings were held in January and February. In recognition of the sesquicentennial of the founding of the Grand Army of the Republic this year, Tent 23 was honored to have guest speaker Mike Wozny (pictured left with Past Tent President, Pat Blackmer) at our March meeting. Mike is a member of GAR Post 8 and SUVCW Colonel Hans Heg Post 15, Wind Lake, WI. He described the founding of the Grand Army of the Republic and its contributions to our nation. He explained that the GAR aimed to emphasize patriotism and became a powerful voting bloc, successfully lobbying Congress for pensions for all Civil War Veterans and widows; the establishment of Decoration Day on May 31; and the erection of monuments at battlefields. The Wisconsin GAR convinced the governor (Civil War Veteran) to require all Wisconsin monuments be made from Wisconsin granite. After the war, the soldiers homes run by the federal government would not allow wives to live with their husbands there. The Wisconsin GAR Veterans did not agree with this so they purchased land in Waupaca, WI where they established the King Soldiers Home, building cottages for husbands and wives to live in together. The cost of a cottage was about $10,000. The DUVCW played a key role in raising much of the funds. The facility still operates today as the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King. As the GAR Veterans aged, the DUVCW took care of their records. Without their help, many posts might have dissolved before they did. When the GAR realized their numbers were dwindling, they turned over their finances to the SUVCW to continue their mission. At the March meeting, Linda Tanner Freitag was sworn in as our newest Sister, bringing our membership to 42. The Department s Mounted Enforcement Detail, part of the Department s Parks Bureau, would be the unit to accompany Sheriff McDonnell down Colorado Boulevard on January 1 st. Sister Leslie Sutton, Clara Barton Tent 95, has been a member of the Mounted Detail for 20 of her 25 years as a Deputy Sheriff. Early New Year s morning participating members of the Mounted Enforcement Detail, the Commander and Captain as well as several young Explorers were led by Sheriff McDonnell onto the parade route to begin the 5.5 mile adventure. Parade organizers assigned the unit a position in the middle of the parade, directly behind the Los Angeles All City Marching Band (the largest band in the parade). Directly behind the Mounted Unit was the Los Angeles Lakers Basketball Team s float complete with its own loud music, cheerleaders, and fireworks. All the extra training paid off as all the horses and riders performed exceptionally well. Riding in the Rose Parade involved a lot of smiling, waiving, and Happy New Year wishes which was a pleasant diversion from the daily duties of law enforcement. All in all, it truly was a new found adventure that will never be forgotten. (Article and photo submitted by Leslie Sutton) 26

28 TENT 61 AND TENT 56, PA MEMBERS VISIT AFRICAN AMERICAN CIVIL WAR MUSEUM WASHINGTON, DC Saturday, April 2, 2016, 4 members from Tents 61 and 56 in PA, traveled to the African American Civil War Museum in Washington, DC to listen to new member, Dianne Cross, Susanna Cook Tent 61, tell the long overdue story of her Civil War ancestor, and great-great grandfather, Sgt. Isaac Hall. The story begins with a picture of a handsome black soldier in a Civil War uniform hanging on a wall in her grandmother s house. She asked her grandmother who the man was and her grandmother answered that the soldier was her grandfather Isaac Hall. That was all she knew about the picture. Over the years, it was handed down, and eventually ended up in Dianne s possession. As the years passed on and Dianne drew close to her retirement, her desire to learn more about this gentleman in the picture increased. With the help of some friends who were able to lead her in the right direction, she slowly started putting together the pieces of Isaac s life and service, much of it obtained in his service records at the National Archives. Dianne told the story of how she gathered information about her ancestor Isaac Hall who was born a slave of David Hall in Sussex Co., DE in March 1839 and how he became a soldier in Company K of the 32 nd USCT through manumission by his owner. Included in his pension records are: Evidence of Title stating that Isaac Hall belonged to David Hall and owed him service for and during the term of his natural life; a Deed of Manumission and Release of Service that allowed Isaac to become free after his term of service; and records stating that David Hall, owner of said slave, received the bounty of $300 for Isaac s service. Isaac Hall s service records show that he was a good soldier. He enlisted as a private in Delaware in March 1864, was appointed a Captain on January 1, 1865 and promoted to Sergeant in March He was mustered out with his unit, a free man, at Hilton Head, SC on August 22, After touring the museum and listening to the presentation, the Sisters went across the street to the African American Memorial, where Sister Dianne pointed out her ancestor s name on the wall of USCT Veterans. It was a somber experience. A few of the headstones were newer and easy to read. Two were marked GAR. A few were broken but mended; one was worn so badly it was impossible to read. The graves were welltended but unknown as to when they were last visited. Linda s husband represented his SUVCW General W. S. Rosecrans Camp 2 and Linda represented Cornelia Hancock Tent 91. A special thank you to the Legionnaires of Moorpark, California for donating the American Flags. The headstone shown on the right is Theodore H. Woodworth.
