1 A MONTHLY PUBLICATION OF SAN DIEGO LODGE NO. 35, F. & A. M. Grand Lodge of California Dispensation Granted August 1, 1851 VOLUME CVIV, Issue 4 April 2018 The Master s Message Public Education has been near and dear to the Masonic mission since the earliest inception of Masonry in the New World. In 1642 the governing Puritans in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts mandated that all children be required to receive an education. Initially, very little traction was made, because the assumption was that parents would teach the children in the home. However, at a time when many parents were unable to read or write, it was a virtual impossibility. Around 1647, the issue was reexamined by the legislature and the Puritans, believing that Satan was trying to delude people into ignorance thereby keeping them from the lessons of scripture, enacted the Old Deluder Satan Law which required any township of 100 households or more to furnish a trained teacher and grammar school at taxpayer expense. Thus, was born the foundation of the public education system in the New World. The concept gained momentum and Puritanical schools began to spread throughout the colonies. They provided, at the very least, a rudimentary education. But it was a foundation none-the-less. As the colonies spread and population centers grew, so did limited access to education. In the early 1700 s, Masons, being proponents of the seven liberal arts and sciences, gathered up the educational mantle and the fundamentals that were taught in the Lodge seeped into the home and surrounding communities. It wasn t until a notable Mason, Benjamin Franklin, started the Publick Academy of Philadelphia in For high school aged students, his school was a first of its kind, having no religious underpinnings, but focused directly on teaching the liberal arts and sciences of the day to prepare young students for the world ahead, regardless of whether they intended to go on to college or enter the trades. The Publick Academy of Philadelphia, with it s curriculum forwarded by Franklin himself, would become the blueprint for public education years later when a young nation was born. From it was born the first medical school in the colonies, and it educated many of the early leaders of what would become the United States of America. Nine signers of the Declaration of Independence and eleven signers of the Constitution were associated with the school at one point or another. As the fledgling nation grew, so did the public school system. As Masonry spread, so did free education. Masons and Lodges were often involved in the establishment of a public school system as communities grew. And while the nation grew westward, so did the Masonic influence on schools. Even here in San Diego, our own Board of Education was established by the early Masons of our Lodge. Renowned Masons from Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, Prince Hall through De Witt Clinton, Albert Pike, and Charles Adams (PGM CA) (continued on page 2) Table Decorations Please thank Julia Swank for the Saint Patrick s Day theme at the March Stated Meeting with the help of Betty Stein, and Sheree Sanchez. Thank you so much ladies, for your significant & consistent efforts in bringing much needed color to our tables and the great work you do in supporting the Lodge!!

2 Need photo Worshipful W. Jay Sener and our March Stated Meeting Guest Speaker, Ernest J. Dronenburg, Jr., San Diego County Assessor/Recorder/ County Clerk. Friends and family gather together for San Diego No. 35 Movie Night, March 16, Everyone looks like they are having a great time! (continued from Page 1) were all outspoken proponents for a public education system that served all communities. Each of these men spoke to and wrote volumes on the importance of education to a free and equal, self-governing society. To quote Pike in Morals and Dogma, Equality has an organ; gratuitous and obligatory instruction. We must begin with the right to the alphabet. The primary school obligatory upon all; the high school offered to all. Such is the law. From the same school for all springs equal society. Today, nearly 400 years after the first attempt at creating a mechanism to educate a wider swath of the population, we have an educational system that despite the immense pressure it is under to serve an ever-growing and diverse population serves our greater community with distinction. American schools have, over the centuries, expanded to encompass a wide array of students who would not have otherwise had access to education. Arguably, it can be reasoned that without public schools, the American middle-class that built and str- engthened this nation, would not have existed; nor would many of the social and economic changes we as a country have experienced throughout the generations. Presently it is the Ivy League school known as the University of Pennsylvania. See you in Lodge, W. Jay Sener, Master From the West As I look at the different masonic items in my office, I am reminded of the several avenues that one can take to find the door of masonry. The Scottish Rite hosts a Masonic Information Night every year where our very own Worshipful Randy Brill does a very good job of explaining what freemasonry is to several prospective candidates and their families. If you know of anybody who has been asking questions about what freemasonry is, I encourage you to invite them and their family on April 25th at 6 pm to join us. This month I would like to discuss the Scottish Rite. The Scottish Rite is often referred to as the Uni- To Families, Wives/Widows and Caregivers Should the person to whom this newsletter is addressed be ill or in some difficulty, please contact the Lodge Secretary at (619) or him at: secretary@sandiego35.org 2

3 (continued from Page 2) signed to help us with a deeper understanding of freemasonry and thus, becoming a better asset to our blue lodges. Although most of the thirty-three degrees of the Scottish Rite existed in parts of previous degree systems, the Scottish Rite did not come into being until the formation of the Mother Supreme Council at Charleston, South Carolina, in May The Founding Fathers of the Scottish Rite who attended became known as "The Eleven Gentlemen of Charleston". In 1857, Albert Pike revised the degrees. While further revisions have been made, the degrees that are practiced today are still based on Pike s revisions. They are literally theatrical productions that incorporate staging, costumes, lighting, and sound effects. Today, the five mandatory degrees (4, 14, 18, 30, and 32) are conferred twice a year during what are called Reunions. For candidates, there is no memorization work required. The Scottish Rite Valley of San Diego takes great pride in being the most active and the premier Valley in California. Its strongest asset is its willingness to support and cooperate with the other appendant bodies and especially our Blue Lodges. If you are a Master Mason in good standing, you can join the Scottish Rite during their Spring Reunion on May 18th and 19th. Be sure to reach out to Bro Chris Natwick for further information. Austin Swank, Senior Warden From the South April is Public Schools month and so this could be an excellent time to ask ourselves. What does it mean to make a daily advancement in Masonic knowledge? We come to our lodge meetings once or twice a month for the camaraderie, to conduct our business, to initiate new candidates, and to do Masonic Things. With the desire those things include learning about Freemasonry. But how many of us actually do anything about it? How many of us open the ritual book to do more than learn a specific part? Or study the Lodge officers guide? Or explore the Grand Lodge constitution? The internet is a great Masonic resource, itunes has podcasts and other materials available. Several of Manly P. Hall s lectures can be viewed in their entirety on YouTube. Also, we can see what people are talking about when it comes to Freemasonry. Even the anti- Masonic content can be educational. It nevers hurts to know the viewpoint of those who disagree with you. Grand Lodge holds special educational events; Districts do the same. Maybe you would like to go to one? Have you bought a book about Masonry recently? Gone to the library? Watched a movie that has Freemasonry as a theme? Have you talked with a brother about Freemasonry? A daily advancement in Masonic knowledge, is not just about learning about Freemasonry. It is about putting into practise that which we ve been taught, so as to perfect the teaching and improve our skills. When you re listening to the ritual being performed during a degree and you hear something that speaks to you, take it and use it in your daily life. Freemasonry is more than listening to the words and repeating them to each other; it s about taking those words 3 and giving them life through our actions and deeds. It s about creating meaning in our lives, so that we spread the understanding, peace, acceptance and happiness that society so desperately needs perhaps more so now than ever before. What we as Freemasons have to share with the world, and the communities where we live, is even more important. It is our responsibility to learn as much as we can about the lessons that Freemasonry has to teach so that we can spread that knowledge to others so that all may benefit. And so, brethren, I invite you to make a daily advancement in Masonic knowledge and spread that knowledge in your home, workplace or anywhere else you go. Not just by talking about things, but by putting into practice the lessons which you learn. Peter Newman, Junior Warden From the Secretary Brethren, we hope that all is well with you and your families. Thank you for the strong response to the third dues notice. There is a large public parking area nearby for those who cannot find easy parking. Brother Steve Sheldon prepared a wonderful article for us on the history of San Diego Lodge No. 35 last month, and we present the conclusion of it; Poor Derby! Full of the fun of living, he nevertheless was an army officer, and did not hesitate when his country was in danger. He returned east in 1861, and one month after the first shots were fired at Ft. Sumter, he was dead, at 38. On his gravestone at West Point is this inscription, by his wife: The light of my life is gone. But the light of Derby s youth and laughter must have burned on, in the memory of San Diego Mason Lodge, to ease the tension of the hard years in which a modern city had to be built on the desert hills down the bay from Old Town. For years after the Mother Lodge had received its charter, it acted as a Protestant, undenominational Church for Sunday afternoon services. MUTUAL VISION When Horton began building New Town, 18 years after Ferrell first accepted office as master of the new lodge. It was the Masons who worked closely with him. There was the mutual vision of the beautiful San Diego that was to be, and it made no difference at the time that no railroads came here, that the inadequate supply of water had to be hoarded, and sold from door to door, day by day. Thirty years after the Lodge was instituted in 1851, the Masons moved into their second home, a hall at Sixth Ave. and H St. Patiently keeping pace with the growth of the city, they erected a new Temple at Fifth Ave. and Ash St. in The Temple to be dedicated Saturday is their fourth home in 91 years of history. The mother lodge will share it with Blackmer Lodge 442 F. & A. M.; S. W. Hackett Lodge 574, F. & A. M.; San Diego Chapter 61, Royal Arch Masons; San Diego Council 23, Royal & Select Masters; San Diego Commandery25, Knights Templar; San Diego Consistory and Coordinate Bodies of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry; and Al Bahr temple, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. ASSOCIATION OWNER The temple also will house the Scottish Rite Woman s club, the Social Order of the Beauceant, and the Daughters of the Nile. Owner of the temple is the San Diego Masonic Temple association, composed of representatives from the lodges that will occupy the building, and first organized in Judge Joe L. Shell is president. No charter members of the mother lodge are living, but William John Mossholder, master from , and charter member of most of the other Masonic bodies that will use the temple, still is home in San Diego, at 2008 Fifth Ave. The present master is Charles W. Webb. 4 Advertising Now Considered We would like to hear from parties interested in advertising in the Master Mason.
