1 First Presbyterian Church First Edition published bi-weekly for the members and friends of the church Todd Jones Pastor My Dear Friends, People speak of God often by using metaphors, because metaphors point beyond themselves to a larger reality and suggest that there is more to know of God than human language can ever capture. The Bible employs metaphorical language all the time in speaking of God. One such image or metaphor that is found throughout both the Old Testament and New Testament is that of the good shepherd. Of course, Psalm 23 memorably begins, The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. Psalm 100 affirms, We are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. In Ezekiel s prophesy we read, I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I will make them lie down, says the Lord God. I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak To the people of Israel, the image of God as shepherd was a source of comfort and reassurance. It spoke of God s providence and protection, something good shepherds routinely did for their flocks. So it is little surprise that Jesus also found meaning in this wonderful metaphor. In John s Gospel, Jesus says, I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep I know my own and my own know me I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd (John 10). The image of Jesus as the good shepherd is one of my favorite, because it is such a comforting and such an evocative picture of God. Jesus as the good shepherd reminds us that we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. The Heidelberg Catechism states That I belong body and soul, in life August 14, 2013 Volume 28, No. 16 and in death not to myself but to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ. It also reminds us that God cares for us, just as a good shepherd cares for his sheep. The hired hand runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep, said Jesus in John 10:13. Jesus cares for us. Jesus as the good shepherd reminds us that we are cared for and tended, loved and sheltered under the shadow of the Almighty. Jesus as the good shepherd also makes the claim that God knows us. In baptism God calls us by name and claims us as beloved children. The Psalmist proclaimed, O Lord, you have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up: you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, O Lord, you know it completely (Psalm 139). In Jesus Christ, we are known by the One who created us. I have always loved this notion of being known by God and am often deeply moved when I sing the words of the hymn, Father-like he tends and spares us; well our feeble frame he knows. God knows me better than I know myself! Better yet, the judgment of Scripture is that God, even in knowing us, loves us and sent His only begotten Son to redeem us. Jesus as the good shepherd leads us to the beautiful heart of the Gospel that Jesus laid down his life for us. Good shepherds would literally lie down across the opening of the walled-in stone pens built to protect the sheep at night from predators. A good shepherd would protect the sheep with his own life, which is of course, the central claim of the Gospel. Jesus laid down his life so we could take up ours and live them fully. Most hopeful of all, though, are Jesus last words in this passage in John. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. This is echoed in other places of the Biblical witness as well, and it suggests that God is not through with us yet, Continued on next page

Continued from front page and that the last word will belong to Jesus Christ. Everywhere, the world is haunted by division and violence, and Jesus promises unity and peace. Many have pondered what Jesus was talking about when he said, I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also No one is really sure what Jesus meant by this saying, but it surely means that God is not through with us and that we who follow Jesus are called to introduce any and all to this great love that Jesus the good shepherd has for the world. Jesus came to bring peace and reconciliation to a troubled and deeply divided world, and two thousand years later, the world needs to listen more than ever to his wonderful promise, So there will be one flock, one shepherd. Let us live our lives every day in the strength and power of this promise! Hospitalized? Call Us! Your ministers want to visit you and pray for you while you are in the hospital. 6 Bible Overview Class (Genesis to Revelation) Returns in September Beginning after Labor Day, Marbut Gaston will again teach his popular Sunday School class, Genesis to Revelation. This 28-week course builds a strong foundation for any continued study of the Bible; it will pay dividends for years to come. Hundreds of members have graduated from it already. They testify that it serves both as a fascinating introduction and as a refresher. The class includes PowerPoint presentations, timelines and maps that give you a more concrete grasp of the people and events of the Bible. It will meet in Vance Hall on Sundays from 9:45 to 10:40 A.M. Marbut is available to discuss the content of the course and to explain the schedule. You may him at marbutjr@aol.com. Why Do We Worship this Way? Presbyterians are distinctive enough to be the subject of a few good jokes. We are, after all, God s frozen people. Then, there is the one about the old Presbyterian who was walking downstairs, and fell the whole way down, bruising himself, but not too badly. He picked himself up, straightened his clothes, and said, I m glad that s over. Just what makes Presbyterians distinctive, aside from that whole predestination subject? This fall, you can study Reformed Worship. It is something that you might sense in the sanctuary on a Sunday morning, without exactly being able to put your finger on it. Why do we worship the way we worship? Why do we not worship the way other Christians worship? If these are questions that interest you, you re invited to join a Thursday evening study in Vance Hall, beginning September 12. The group enjoys an optional dinner at 6:30 P.M. ($6) and the study runs from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M. You can contact Stuart Gordon (sgordon@fpcnashville.org) for more information. Copies of Howard Rice s book, Reformed Worship, are available in Bookmarks, the church bookstore. The Gospel of Matthew: Jesus Heads Toward His Destiny In September, three lunchtime study groups will follow Matthew s presentation of Jesus journey toward Jerusalem. On Mondays in Maryland Farms (Cushman-Wakefield Building), Wednesdays in Green Hills (Freeman-Webb Building), and Fridays downtown (Fifth/Third Building), Associate Pastor Stuart Gordon will lead these lunchtime study groups. You re invited to bring a lunch and take part when you re able; each group gathers with food and discussion, with the study completing the 55-minute gathering. You can contact Stuart for more information: sgordon@fpcnashville.org. What Do They Say About Jesus? After Labor Day, the Logos Sunday School class will begin a year of listening to the many witnesses who testify about Jesus. Jesus himself once asked his still-green followers, Who do people say that I am? And then, Who do you say that I am? Whether you are a lifelong disciple or an interested seeker, those questions are still apparent. So, the class will spend the fall listening to accounts of the life and ministry; Advent listening to testimony about the incarnation; winter and Lent about the death; and the spring about Jesus resurrection and ascension. The Logos Class is led by the Rev. Stuart Gordon and meets in Stanford Chapel each Sunday from 10:00 to 10:40 A.M. beginning September 15. Nice Women Study Bad Girls The Thursday Morning Women s Bible Study will continue its study of Liz Curtis Higgs Bad Girls of the Bible, beginning Thursday, September 5. Our group meets from 7:00 until 7:45 A.M. in Vance Hall and is led by Associate Pastor Sandra Randleman. Women of all ages are invited to join us for this lively and enlightening study of the Bible from a most unique perspective. If you have any questions, please contact Sandra (srandleman@fpcnashville.org or ). 8 First Things First Endowment Program Update Once again, we can all be thankful for the generosity demonstrated by past members who included the church in their planned giving. Those gifts continue year after year to fund programs, projects and missions that otherwise would not be possible or would put pressure on our annual operating budget. Here s a short list of some of the things that endowment fund income accomplished in 2012: $12,000 to assist two members in their seminary educational pursuits. $12,000 to support the Center for Youth Ministry Training. $3,000 for scholarships for needy children to be able to attend the Oak Hill Day Camp. $3,000 for repair of sanctuary steps and landscape planting design work. $100,000 (draw made in January 2013) to support New Creation Church, our New Church Development project in Hendersonville. $307,000 for construction of the Prayer Room and improvements to The Gathering Place. $149,000 for refurbishment of the sanctuary, HVAC upgrades, kitchen upgrades and roof improvements. Absent endowment support, the cost for these capital improvements would have been a drag on the church s operating budget. You can find a complete report of all of our endowment funds on our website by going to: fpcnashville.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/fpc- 2012EndowmentAnnualReport.pdf. We sincerely hope that you will prayerfully consider joining those who have already expressed their love of the church by including it in their planned giving. What stronger statement is there about what was important in life than a gift that extends beyond one s life on this earth? The easiest way for many members to participate is by a simple bequest in their will: After all my bills are paid, I want X% of my estate to go to First Presbyterian Church. Another easy method is to designate the church as a beneficiary of a percentage of a retirement account, such as a 401(k) account. There are other ways too, and any planned gift qualifies you for membership in our Vance Society. In 2012, we had several new Vance Society members. Last September we celebrated our second annual thank you dinner, to which all Vance Society members were invited and a joyous event it was! This year s thank you dinner will be Sunday evening, September 15, so now is a wonderful time for you to become a member of the Vance Society. Once you have included the church in your planned giving, complete the enrollment form that you can download from the church website at fpcnashville.org/wpcontent/uploads/2012/07/vancesocietyenroll.pdf, and send it to Cindy Bozman in the church office. And as always, we encourage you to contact any member of the Endowment Committee listed below or the church s Finance Office if you have questions. Thank you for your prayerful consideration! 10 Our Sunday Worship in Uganda F A M I L Y O F A B R A H A M P R E S E N T S... L. Randolph Lowry President, Lipscomb University Sunday was a very special day for all of us! The day started early. We arrived at the church about 9:30 A.M. Since the service is generally quite long, we were fed before it started. We had tea, coffee, chapatis, arrowroot, sweet potatoes and fruit. The service was moderated by a very special friend, the Past-Moderator Rev. Dr. Jesse Kamau. There were guests from the Presbytery and elders from other churches. The congregation had previously worshipped in a dark, wooden, termite-infested structure with a dirt floor so they were very happy with their new church, and it was a day of real celebration. The service was well organized by Rev. Kamau and the minister, Rev. George Kahuho Ngatia, and we finished on time. After the service, we were served lunch. The congregation was challenged to start a school in the old church, and when they have 50 students, we will help them build classrooms. The challenge was met with loud applause. This is the third church we have built in Gilgil Parish, and we have plans to do one more this year; it should be dedicated in September. s p e a k i n g o n Creating Relationships in the Midst of Diversity Thursday, August 22 at 7:00 P.M.
