1 First Presbyterian Church First Edition published bi-weekly for the members and friends of the church August 8, 2012 Volume 27, No. 16 Catherine Foster Pastor of Young Adult Ministry Grace and Peace to you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. What a joy it has been to join First Presbyterian Church in ministry! My first two weeks in Nashville have been filled with friendly folks, incredible food and overwhelming support.i am humbled and honored to join such a gifted and professional team of colleagues, and this congregation s dedicated faithfulness has already deeply impressed me.thank you for welcoming me into your family of faith. I look forward to getting to know you better. It was exactly a year ago this month when I began praying that God would call me to a large church in a metropolitan Southern city to engage in a ministry of education and outreach.with this call to FPC, the Lord not only answered my prayer but also exceeded my wildest expectation with the rare and exciting opportunity to serve my own age group young adults. As many of you know, my two primary functions as Associate Pastor foryoung Adult Ministry will be shepherding our church s ministry to and with young adults (post-college to mid-thirties) and leading the 5:30 contemporary worship service.there is no such thing as one-size-fits-all young adult ministry. Between the ages of 22 and 35, today s young adults may finish college, move to a new city, fall in love, experiment with a career, study for a master s degree, fall out of love, move back home, discover their true vocation, get married, move again, buy their first home and start having children.the ministry needs and interests of young adults vary drastically depending on their season in life and unique spiritual journeys. FPC has already begun to respond to the niche nature of young adult ministry with four different Sunday school classes, a young adult Bible Study, special mission trips and the 5:30 service. In my first two weeks at the church, I have been overwhelmed with the solid foundation and targeted enthusiasm I have discovered for young adult ministry.though it is too early to say what the future of young adult ministry will look like at FPC, the young adults I have already met have expressed interests in intergenerational mentoring programs, recreational sports leagues, additional Bible studies and local and international mission projects. The 5:30 service offers a fantastic venue for relaxed Reformed worship with engaging Biblical preaching.the flexible space of the Enrichment Center coupled with the educational and artistic possibilities of the projection screen present endless possibilities for intimate and imaginative worship. Even if your tastes tend toward traditional worship, I hope you will join us at the 5:30 to discover how the Holy Spirit is moving in that space. Across denominations, churches are struggling with the content and structure of young adult ministry. For many reasons, my generation is delaying, if not abandoning, the traditional path of finishing school, getting married, buying a home, joining a church and starting a family. According to the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life, only 33% of Millennials (adults born after 1980) attend some sort of religious service every week.a full 25% of Millennials do not affiliate with any religion at all. As FPC turns its focus to ministry with this population, you may be curious how you can be supportive and involved. First, if you have young adults as family members, colleagues or friends, let them know that FPC cares about their unique age group. Many young adults are surprised to discover church life beyond youth group. Second, when you see young adults around the church, let them know you are glad to see them.whether they are children of the church or Nashville transplants, they are going against the broader culture to be at church. Help them to feel at home here.finally, pray for us.today s young adults face countless difficult decisions, an incredibly tough job market and friends with radically different beliefs and values.we need your support. My prayer for FPC s young adult ministry is that we would be a welcoming Christian community where young adults can grow in their spiritual maturity, increase their Biblical literacy, find authentic fellowship and serve their church, city and world. I can hardly wait to discover the adventures that God has planned for FPC s young adult ministry! Sincerely,

Greeter Volunteers Needed Do you remember what it was like the first time you walked in the door at First Presbyterian Church? Were you more than a little overwhelmed? We remember that day well, and it was over 22 years ago. Fortunately for us, the people here that day smiled at us, made us feel welcome and helped us feel at home in God s house. Would you like to help carry on that tradition by providing a welcoming greeting to visitors and church members, and guidance if needed? We are looking for volunteer greeters to serve on Sunday mornings from 9:30-10:00 A.M. Training material will be provided so that you will be equipped to answer the most commonly asked questions. 3 the mornings we were able to, we participated in prayer and worship time. It was powerful to witness children lifting up shouts and wails of prayer to God despite their inability to even speak. Most afternoons were spent helping with activities around Wings such as arts and crafts, playing games and playing on the large patio with hand-cars and balls. In addition, the children who are able to do chores earn a small allowance and take a trip into town once a year to spend their money, and we had the honor this year of accompanying them on this highly anticipated activity.this year, radios were high on the list of hot items! We also participated in equine therapy at a horse stable in Port Au Prince with some of the children who ride horses weekly to strengthen their bodies and assist with socialization. Friday was the weekly dance party where all 31 kids came down to the patio to dance and play as the staff drummed and sang for hours.the looks of joy and happiness were priceless. It was a week of service, faith and love unlike any I have experienced before and one that I will never forget. Having only been on construction project mission trips prior, I was worried that our time there would not be productive if we were not building something. But I learned that, while it was less tangible, we still built something valuable long-lasting bonds with resilient and loving children of God and with a wonderful organization seeking to make the world a better place. I learned that there are different types of physical labor and that using our hands to feed, carry or dance with a disabled child is just as important as using them to shovel sand or stack cinderblocks. I learned that if we simply open ourselves up to new countries and their people and learn to get out of the way of ourselves, we are able to love and serve as Jesus did and as God calls us to do as well. To learn more about these organizations, find them on the web: (St. Joseph s Family) and Trip Participants: Decker Chaney, Hannah DeZeeuw, Rev. Jennifer Fouse, Will Hoeppner, David Miller, Holly Miller, Katy Miller, Rhonda Miller, Dan Rau and Stephen Sells. Fall Class Schedule Register at Cost is $50 for each child. Mondays beginning September 10, 11:00-11:30 A.M. The Family Music for Babies and Toddlers class teaches parents how to play musically with their young child. Thursdays beginning September 13, 9:30-10:00 A.M. The Family Music for Babies class teaches parents how to play musically with their newborn-18 month baby. Thursdays beginning September 13, 10:15-10:45 A.M. The Family Music for Toddlers 15 mo-3 ½ yrs and adult, includes singing, chanting, moving, dancing, listening and playing simple instruments.

4 A Week of Service, Faith and Love by Holly Miller In all of my international travels to Central America, Africa, Mexico, Australia and Europe, no country has captured my heart as quickly or completely as Haiti and its people. From the moment we stepped off the plane into the tangible heat and became surrounded by the sights, smells and sounds only a city of 3.2 million in a third world country can offer, I knew this trip would be special. We journeyed by van through Port Au Prince, seeing firsthand the bustle of tap-tap drivers and street vendors and passing tent cities and dilapidated buildings left unrepaired since the 7.0 earthquake that rocked the city exactly two and a half years ago. We drove over an hour up to the mountain town of Fermathe to our new home, Wings of Hope. Part of the St. Joseph s Family, which also includes the St. Joseph s Home for Boys in Port Au Prince and Trinity Home in Jacmel, Wings is a home for children with physical and mental disabilities. Those with disabilities in Haiti are outcast, feared and hidden, seen as a side effect of the family s sins. The 31 children at Wings were abandoned at hospitals or other orphanages, dropped off by families who could not care for their special needs, or who were simply left on the street outside the Wings gates. Compared to the lives they would have had on the streets or in other more institutionalized facilities, at Wings, they are part of a loving and wonderful family. However, my initial reaction to seeing the home and meeting the children was one of nervousness and sadness. The degree of both physical and mental disability was greater than I had expected, with many children having decreased use of parts or all of their bodies, limited or no speech and impaired social interaction. But, as we would later learn, Wings focuses on possibilities not disabilities, and as we got to know these amazing kids over the next week, we quickly discovered they are so much more than their handicap would seek to define. Every one of them had a unique and wonderful personality and physical, cognitive and social abilities that one may not expect at first glance. We quickly became friends, and we somehow found ways to understand each other despite the developmental and language barrier. Our week was full of humbling, challenging and rewarding experiences. We took some time to visit St. Joseph s Home for Boys in Port Au Prince and learned the story of the St. Joseph s Family. We also spent a day visiting Haiti Outreach Ministries, which boasts 5 campuses that include primary and vocational schools, a medical clinic, a clean water facility, an orphanage and churches; they are a wonderful resource to each community they serve. Pastor Leon, the energetic and personable Field Director at HOM took time to show us two of the campuses, one of which is still being rebuilt. The main campus we saw was in the midst of their month-long VBS, so the campus was full of excited and spirited children. Back at Wings, we settled into the daily routine of life. We assisted with feeding children meals who were unable to feed themselves each morning, afternoon and evening. On

5 Raise the Roof Habitat Build Begins September 15 For the first time in our partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Nashville, First Presbyterian Church will build a Habitat home for one of its own employees. We published a story a few weeks ago that our own property staff team member, Erica Greene, has qualified for a Habitat home and been assigned to FPC as our partner family. If you were blessed to be at worship on Sunday morning, August 5, you may have had a chance to hear Erica give a Minute for Mission, or perhaps you visited with her and her family in Courtenay Hall or in your Sunday School class later that morning. Now you have a chance to work on-site with Erica to lovingly build the home soon to be occupied by her and her four children. We will work every Saturday AND Sunday (we only stop for lightning or extreme downpours) from September 15 through October 7. Mickey Martin and Michael Baron, co-captains for the final build day, promise the home will be finished and dedicated on Sunday, October 7, so plan now to join them at the celebration. All tools and supplies for every build day are provided by Habitat so all you need to bring is a friendly and a can-do attitude! The build is set in southeast Davidson county; specific directions will be available closer to the build date. This is the perfect project for a Sunday School Class or group of friends or co-workers. All volunteers must be at least 16 years old and youth volunteers require parental permission ahead of time. FPC has committed to provide volunteers each build day. There are jobs for all skill levels with a special need for lunch providers for our hungry builders. You ll want to commit early to reserve your volunteer spaces for this very exciting project here at FPC. Sign-ups have begun in Courtenay Hall for this special home build. Won t you join us? Contact our fall build co-chairs, Steve Butler and Les Coble, with any questions or special offers of assistance. Patricia Heim in our Missions Office is also available to answer questions or assist ( or adultmissions@fpcnashville.org). First Friends Sunday Lunch August 12 We are visiting another new restaurant, Urban Grub, located in the popular 12 South neighborhood. This chic, contemporary restaurant has risen out of a gutted car wash. Word is that the interior is as striking as the exterior. Word also is that food offerings are excellent. The brunch menu features Stratas, Bennies (Benedicts), as well as traditional fare. Make reservations with Ginny Tindle ( or gtindle@fpcnashville.org) by Friday, August 10. Find It Here! fpcnashville.org Our new website launches on August 15! Our next DivorceCare seminar and support group begins on Wednesday, September 19, at 6:00 P.M. in Vance Hall and will be led by Dr. Sandra Randleman. DivorceCare is a video seminar series featuring some of the nation s foremost experts on divorce and recovery topics. Seminar sessions include Facing My Anger, Facing My Loneliness, Depression, New Relationships, Kidcare and Forgiveness. Nursery is provided with reservation. 7 Bible Studies, Friendships and More Everybody knows that First Presbyterian is a big place! Sometimes it is hard to get to know even a handful of people if you do not have children that have come through the church to introduce you to peers. That is one of the reasons that I joined the evening circle. For women who work during the day, it is virtually impossible to make it to the daytime circles, so when PW announced a new evening circle was starting for working women, I signed up! I have been so impressed with the Bible studies over the past few years they are carefully chosen and every one of them has challenged and changed me in some way. But the biggest joy out of the circle meetings has come in the friendships I have made. These sisters have taught me so much and we have shared a lot of joys and burdens with each other. I am truly thankful and blessed to be a part of Circle 6! Terry Weingartner Presbyterian Women Fall Luncheon The Presbyterian Women cordially invite all women of the church, to gather for a Fall Luncheon on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at 10:30 A.M. A special time for fellowship is the goal for our luncheon. Guest speaker, Rev. Anne Alexander Stauffer will share her wisdom on the art of developing spiritual friendships that nourish the soul. Come and experience the abundance of fruit of the spirit that awaits each and every woman in our church. Tickets are $12 and will be available for sale beginning August 26 in Courtney Hall between church services and in the church office through Ginny Tindle. Nursery is available, please make your reservation with Karen Fitts at But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23 New International Version (NIV) PW CIRCLE ENROLLMENT FORM Name: Address: Circle Preference: Tuesday Morning Mixed Ages Tuesday Morning Young Women Preferred Phone: Tuesday Evening Mixed Ages Wednesday Evening Young Women Morning circles meet the second Tuesday of each month at 10:00 A.M. at church. Fellowship Therefore, as God s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love which binds them all together in perfect unity. Col 3:12-14 NIV

9 Farewell Friend You Will Be Missed! Fall Wednesdays Nearly Time to Register! The music is being written, the leaders are making commitments and the pre-registrations are already coming in! A new chapter in Wednesdays at First Presbyterian Church begins on September 12. With the launch of our new church website in mid-august, you ll be able to learn almost everything there is to know about the upcoming season of Wednesdays at FPC There are a few things, though, that you can know already: Children will have expanded opportunities for study, fellowship and making music. Parents will gather on August 19 during the Sunday School hour for a full introduction to The Way, the children s portion of Fall Wednesdays. Adults will have options for fellowship and recreation, in addition to classes. Women will have their own Bible study, led by Presbyterian Women. Adults can register for classes and groups before they begin, so that interest can be gauged and rooms assigned accurately. The fall season kicks off on September 12 with an old-fashioned cookout and evening of recreation for all ages. Keep an eye on your inbox for announcements and an invitation to register! On the beautiful morning of July 29, our church celebrated Tom Walker s second retirement with delightful fellowship at a reception honoring him and his wife, Betty. Presbyterian Women provided the food, which included fresh fruit, muffins, pastries and other delights. Tom Walker was presented with a gift from the church and a letter from fellow pastor and friend, the Rev. Dopico. Thank you, Tom Walker, for all that you have given us! The Forgotten Story of the Gospels N.T. Wright is one of the most reliable teachers of the New Testament in the English-speaking world. He has written numerous books and travelled extensively to speak publicly, including two visits from England to Nashville in recent memory. His most recent book, How God Became King: The Forgotten Story of the Gospels, continues his effort to help Christians understand the Bible as its writers offered it. Wright s style is accessible but informed by world-class scholarship. Wright also challenges his readers! Maybe you re hungry for a challenge for your faith this fall, for a chance to dig deeper, seek more earnestly and live more faithfully. Did Jesus come to teach people how to go to heaven? Do the miracles of Jesus prove that he is the Son of God? Did Jesus come to set us an example of how to live? Wright wants us to go deeper than our traditional questions and answers, to the very heart of the gospel of the Son of God. If that strikes a chord in you, consider yourself invited to read and discuss Wright on Thursday evenings at First Presbyterian Church. Beginning September 13, Associate Pastor Stuart Gordon will lead this discussion of The Forgotten Story of the Gospels. At 6:30 P.M., an optional light dinner will be served for $5, with discussion from 7:00-8:00 P.M. Please contact Stuart to join the group ( or sgordon@fpcnashville.org).
