2 THE CRESCENT VOLUME XXXVIII, OREGON, DECEMBER 8, 926 SPEAKER WOMEN'S AUXILIARY PROMINENT ADDRESSES ASSEMBLY SPONSORS FAIR College Students Entertin t Community Festivl Lst Sturdy Evening The Community Fir, conducted by Women's Auviliry tr> Pcif!!' College, opened on Thursdy, Dec. 2, in building formerly occupied by Lrkin-Prince Hrdwre compny. This is second festivl of its kind to be conducted by Auxiliry ldies, first being held twelve or fourteen yers go. The min purpose of fir ws to rise money to cover yerly pledge of $ mde by Women's Auxiliry to Mintennce Fund of Pcific College, nd it is grtifying to note tht purpose ws well served, gross proceeds totling $ In rediness for fir, booths were constructed round wlls of building nd up center. The merchnts nd business concerns who purchsed se booths for exhibition of ir products were Lynn B. Ferguson, Thoms Miles, W. A. Grhm, Oregon Grin Co., E. C. Bird, J. C. Porter, W. W. Hollingsworth, Miller Mercntile Co., J. A. Hollingsworth, C. J. Breier, J. I.. Vn Blricom, Abbott Rdio Shop, Lrkin-Prince Hrdwre Co., C. A. Hodson, Vincent's Feed Store, Self-Service Store, Ymhill Electric Co., Oregon Cnning Co., Ed Crede, Mrs. Bllock, Ottmn's Shoe Store, nd Mr. Crow, ll of Newberg; nd in ddition Hecock Ssh nd Door Co., John Prsons, F. W. Hutchcroft, nd Felix Rosch of Portlnd. Six communities Springbrook, Rex, St. Pul, Sunnycrest, Dundee, nd Fernwood ccepted booths nd rrnged some splendid displys. Free booths were given to Newberg High School, Prent-Techer ssocition, Pcific College, Civic Improvement Club, nd Chmber of Commerce. Severl business houses mde contributions to fir insted of buying dvertising spce. These firms were: City Met Mrket, nd Plce Met Mrket of Newberg; Tru Blu Biscuit compny, Albers Milling Co., Crown Flour Mills, Meier & Frnk compny, nd Libby, McNeill & Libby of Portlnd. The displys were ll very interesting nd plesingly rrnged. Prizes for best exhibits were wrded s follows: Honorble mention, St. Pul; third plce, Dundee; second plce, Sunnycrest; nd first plce,.springbrook. The competition for prizes ws close nd judging ws difficult tsk. Besides displys, dded ttrctions were offered in three of booths; J. L. Vn Blricom conducted demonstrtion of Honeyed Whole Whet nd Silver Nut Mrgrine; Oregon Cnning compny served crckers nd jm, nd J. C. Porter & compny served hot coffee. The Women's Auxiliry served hungry public t ir lunch counter, supplied needle work for ldy Christms shoppers, helped to clo ir ptrons by conducting rummge sle, nd ctered to sweettooth with n offering of home-mde (Continued on pge two) "By wht right do we of white rce set ourselves up s superior to those of colored skins we who re but one in four of world's inhbitnts?" sked Miss Amy Blnche Greene, executive secretry of Fellowship for Christin Socil Order, in brief ddress to student body t regulr chpel hour, Mondy, November 29. The white rces comprise but onefourth of totl popultion of erth, but nine-tenths of erth's surfce is under white rce's control, eir politiclly or economiclly, or both, Miss Greene slted. "The commission on Extr Territorility hs recommended tht this right of extr territorility eb grdully withdrwn from Chin," Miss Greene reported, but, she sked, "Where did this right come from originlly? From right of might bsed upon conquest." Miss Greene briefly outlined history of delings of United Sttes nd or ntions with Chinese. She pointed out fct t h t foreign cpitl entered Chin nd or exploit ed countries unsolicited nd in time of internl unrest ws supported by militry nd nvl power. "The United Sttes hs six gunbots of specil design which re used to protect Americn finncil interests in Chin," Miss Greene stted. These bots re cpble of cruising 4000 miles up Ynktese river to very hert of Chin. "Wht would Americ do if Chinese gunbots should stem up Mississippi nd Ohio rivers to Pittsburg to protect Chinese investments re?" Miss Greene sked. "Would we not feel s Chinese students do? And yet, how mny Americns frown upon youth movement in Chin!" When truth is received we will form n intelligent public opinion nd corresponding course of ction, Miss Greene believes. The difficulty lies in fct tht unbised nd uncolored news cn only be obtined through indirect sources, such s missionries, T. M. C. A. nd T. W. C. A. workers. The only press service from Chin is in British hnds, nd ll news from this source is strongly colored on British side. 5 FORMER STUDENT TELLS EXPERIENCES Miss Fleet Lelund Writes From tlie "University Aflot" November, 026. Der P. C. Friends: Whtever else Los Angeles my hve ment to me, it signified one thing especilly letters from home. We hd been t se three weeks, nd I hd been without news from home for four long weeks. The mil bskets were re on whrf witing us when we rrived t Sn Pedro bout noon on October 8 (some eighteen hours hed of schedule). A few of.students did get few letters n, but wited until lte tht night nd got mine when I returned from drive round city. Tht ws just s long s I could wit, however, so I st up until long fter midnight reding nd re-reding letters nd newspper clippings from home, school, nd friends. It surely ws tret to hve news nd to know tht y were getting long fine (even without me!). It required quite bit of time to become ccustomed to routine work on bord, but I seem to hve done so by now. The dy begins quite erly when bugle is blown t six-thirty to wken those who re not lredy wke. Brekfst is served from seventhirty until nine, though first clss period begins t eight. Ech period lsts one hour (not fifty minutes) nd clss dy does not end until six in evening. Even n re re some lecture courses given fter supper. I hppen to hve n eight o'clock clss eveiy week dy nd t times when I m sleepy I wish tht I did not. And yet, necessity of getting to tht clss on time strts ech dy with snp. On no dy do I hve more thn three clsses, becuse Sturdy is included s 'school dy. If it were not, I might hve four or five ech <iymy schedule is not s hevy s one I would hve t Pcific, nd yet it keeps me busy becuse re re so mny distrctions which I hve not lerned to ignore. I find tht I hve tendency to just sit nd wtch wter. Even when se is clm, I love to see fom nd swell cused by prow s we sil long. Anor thing which disturbs study is opportunity to cht with or people, for it is very Interesting to discover ir ides, opinions, nd interests. I knew only one person before I strted, so of course I hve hd to do lot of "getting cquinted." In fct, conditions of study on se re so utterly different tht I find it difficult to concent) te on ny text books t ll, nd when I hppen to be lzy, I wish tht I did not feel obliged to work for credit. Life is not entirely question of studying, however; re re vrious ctivities which demnd ir shre of ttention. The most noticeble is Binncle, our dily newsppjer which is published on bord by deprtment of Journlism under direction of Ex-governor Allen of Knss. The Binncle is sme size s Crescent nd dcvotis itself minly to ccounts of dys shore, unusul events like ppernce of bird t time we were seven hundred, fifty miles from nerest lnd, nnouncements, nd instructions for next port. I men to show you some of my copies when I come bck. Or ctivities re men's chorus, women's chorus, drmtics,, orchestr, nd orgniztion of student body. The lst hs president, council, nd severl committees but no tresurer. Tht seems unusul to me, nd I lso think it significnt tht The Binncle hs no dvertising nd no chrge for subscription, except to those who re not on bord ship. Sports nd physicl eduction form topic by mselves. There re not dequte futilities on bord, nd yet it relly is surprising how mny sports cn be prcticed in limited spce which deck ffords. I hve stood on rer of promende deck just to see how mny different things were going on t sme time. There ws rchery, swimming, boxing, wrestling, fencing, nd deck forms of tennis, footbll, bsket bll, nd golf. The surprising thing bout it ws tht ll of se provided gret del of musement nd exercise, too. The compulsoiy prt of physicl trining comes in with ordinry gymnsium clsses held three times week for ll men nd women, even members of fculty. I hve herd tht one my substitute some sports for clsses, but I hve not tken up nything else. The clsses re held out on deck nd it is plesnt exercising in bthing suit, if wer is wrm, or in middy nd bloomers if it is cooler. Some kind of exercise is bsolutely necessry on ship bord. I hve hd privilege of meeting some very splendid people on this cruise. Mr. Mcintosh, president of I'niversityl Trvel Assocition, Is tll, kindly mn with bility of being interested in individul nd of mking one feel quite t home with him. Miss Anderson, his secretry, is just s likble. The first time I sw her I thought of Miss Lewis, nd furr cquintnce with her ctions, mnners, nd friendliness hs heightened tht impression of similrity. The two do not look very much like, nd yet y do it is hrd to explin. The members of fculty re very nice nd mjority of students re like those we hve t Pcific. Of course, re re exceptions, but we re fortunte tht se re in minority. We live so close toger tht life would orwise be very miserble. Newberg Grphic Jewelry OPPOSITE THE POST OFFICE DR. I. R.
