3 WE HAVE HEARD g et del in recent yers bout vitmins nd their vlue for helth nd strength. Without certin vitmins we re told, our bodies become ill. f this is true in our physicl life, is it not possible tht there re vitmins which we need for our spiritul life nd our church life? And re not certin vitmins necessry in the life of our Sundy School if we re going to hve vitl orgniztion? would suggest six vitmins tht re essentil to our Sundy School life if we re going to hve rel victory. Yitmin A s Action. An enti e book of the New Testment is given over to ction, the Acts of the Apostles. Tht book is primrily the history of the postles Peter nd Pul. Wherever we open this book, we see the Lord's servnts busily engged in His work. When Pul went into city, it ws not long before New Testmênt church ws strted. He begn witnessing in the syngogue, then in the mrket plce. Before long in someone's home group of Christins ws rneeting. This ws result of ction. t ws the result of tlking to people everywhere bout Christ. A verse in the Epistle of Jmes (l:zz) demnds ction: "But be ye doers of the word, nd not he ers only, deceiving your own selves." t is not enough tht we re orthodox in doctrine; we must be orthodox in our living. Men hve perfect right to question the spiritulity of one who clims to be "so spiritul" but is not doing nything bout it. Dr. Henriett Mers sys tht..we hve sitution in mny churðhes tody where so mny people just sit.... Sitting church members lwys crete sitution.', We must distinguish between ctivity nd spiritulity. t is ltogether possible tht we my hve ctivity without spiritulity. But do not believe we cn hve rel spiritulity without ctivity. When there is the right kind of spiritulity something is going to hppen. Tht something is revivl. red some time go of mn who lived next door to church. Though he hd lived there for mny yers, it ment little to him. Perhps some yers bck cll or two hd been mde, but the church members hd soon put him down s hopeless cse. He ws known in the city s the town gnostic. But once, in the middle of the night, the church cught on fire. This mn, with other neighbors nd friends close by, few of the members, rushed to the church to see wht they could slvge. While he ws wtching the structure burn, the neighbor ws interrogted by church member, "Wht brought you over to the chu ch? 've never seen you here before." This is the fi st time 've seen the church on fire," cme the reply. 'We must be certin tht there is some Dr. Clte A. Risley is Executive Secretry of NSSA. This rticle v s supplied by Ntionl Sundy School Assocition in observnce of Ntionl Sundy School Week, September 2Í,-October 2. Aucusr, 1960 Vitol Vitqmins for Sundqy School Victory fire in the pulpit nd in the pew if we re going to meet the needs of ny community! Yitmin B s The Bible. We must be certin tht our ction is Bible-centered. A Bible-centered progrm will be Christcentered progrm, fo Christ is the subject of the Bible. The messge of the Bible is the gret contribution the Chu ch hs to offer to ny community. There re other orgniztions with perhps better buildings, finer equipment nd more money, but these do not give the people the Word of God. 'We must be creful tht we do not llow ourselves to deteriorte into just nother orgniztion. Let us remin God's orgniztion, the Church, giving the Word of God to the people. t is the Bible tht mkes the difference in life. t is the Bible tht mkes the difference in homes, in the fmily, in churches, in communities nd even in ntions. With ll our sinfulness in this gret ntion we still cn see nd feel on every hnd the influence of the Word of God through the lives of the people of God. We shudder to think wht Americ would be nd wht it will be if the time ever comes when we cnnot prech nd tech the Word of God. As church nd s Sundy School, if we re going to give out God's Word we must be certin tht we know it. For how cn we tech it, if we do not know it ourselves? The lw of teching declres tht the techer must know wht he is to tech. So must ech nd every one of us study to show himself "pproved unto God, workmn tht needeth not to be shmed, rightly dividing the V/ord'of truth." When think of tht verse, Timothy 2:15, especilly in reltion to Sundy School, lwys think of the vrious ge' groups nd the different deprtments. t sys, "rightly dividing the word of truth." oooooo o s your Sunùry School síck nd, run-down? Hus your school suffered, sun'tm.er slump? Here ure s x uítmíns whíchutíll gíe new ífe to your school. oo. By Clore A. Risley o ) To me this mens giving it out in such wy tht whether we re tlking to four or five yer old or to fourteen or fifteen yer old he will be ble to grsp somerhing of tht Word. Tht mens, we must lern how to inrprt t to the beginner, the prinrry, the junior, the junior high, the yøfràíjpbrson nd the dult..ki4ir?:ì; t is trgic when someone teqhe$;äigroup of juniors s though they were 1oufig dults. And it is just s gret trgedy, vice vers. And, yet, how often techer will tlk over the heds of the children nd nother techer.will tlk down to group of young people. The children cnnot grsp tht. which is put bove them nd the young people resent tht which is put down to them. Be certin s techer tht you re giving your clss the Word of God every single week. But if tht Word hs not become prt of you nd if you re not prcticing it, you will not imprt it to others so tht they cn interpret it into dily living. Yitmin C s Contct, n importnt vitmin for victory in every Sundy School progrm. My chllenge you to look round nd see tody the denomintions nd the churches tht re growing most rpidly. You will find tht, without n exception, they re those which hve rel Sundy School progrm. Tke closer look nd. you will discover tht vitl prt of their progrm is visittion nd contct. Going out nd witnessing to the people bout Christ, nd inviting them to the church nd the Sundy School is certin to bring results. Do you know tht there is not one single coftmnd in the Word of God for the rinsved to come to church? All of the directives nd commnds re for the church to go out-to go into the highwys nd hedges nd to persude them to come in. (Continued on pge B) PecB 3

6 ll i Yote lor SuniY School CHCAGO, ll'-the theme for the 1960 observnce of Ntionl Sundy School Week "Vote for SundY School" - - emphsizes the spiritul duties of ll Christin people in this importnt politicl yer' Nàtionl Sundy School Week is September 25 to October 2. lt is time when church people re lerted to the strtegic importnce ìt ttre Sundy School nd when Sundy Schools rech out into their communities to enlist new members. More importnt. thn 'the outcome of this rce, however, is the outcome of the current spiritul conflict' Seculrism is ttempting to do wy with Christinity. Humn expediency would unset Christin morlity. 7 REPORT OF c0f{ullsslon TO STUDY THEOLOErcAL LBERALSM COMMTTEE MEMBERS R. Eugene Wddell, Chirmn, N. R. Smith, Ronld Creech, Pul Kettemn, Bobby Jckson PAUL WARNED tht "the time will come when men will not endure sound doctrine." Tht time cme when the visible chu ch becme engulfed in the Romn Ctholic heresy. Lter, fter the rise of Protestntism nd the revivl of New Testment Christinity, the church fced new doctrinl ttcks. The climx of these is the ttempt of stn to destroy God's work by modernism. This is perhps his most successful ttck becuse it is his most subtle ttempt. t works from within. Like worm in n pple, modernism ets wy t the core of the church leving beutiful outside but no hert. Report on Our Vorh This Commission hs studied the foe of theologicl liberlism. Attention ws given to the fct of wht constitutes modernist in church work. The term is used to designte those who believe nd tech certin modern theories bout scripturl truth. t does not necessrily pply to the use of modern equipment. t does not necessrily refer to church with new building of contemporry design. n the most generlly ccepted sense modernist is theologicl liberl who does not hold to historicl Christin truths. The doctrines of the modernist re such errors s the following: The Bible is humn book full of mistkes insted of the inerrnt WORD OF GOD; the mircles of the Bible re more myth thn mircle; Jesus is the illegitimte son of n unfortunte womn insted of the Virgin Born, sin-less son of the Almighty God; the deth of Christ ws mrtyr's finish to religious leder's life insted of the substitutionry tonement for the sins of the world; the resurrection of Jesus ws mentl hllucintion of some misguided zelots insted of the victorious bodily triumph of the King of kings nd Lord of lords; the need of the world is psychologicl djustment insted of Holy Ghost regenertion; nd the mission of the church is more to construct new socil order thn to sntch sinners from eternl hell by God's gospel. Considertion ws lso given to the newmodernism: neo-orthodoxy. This is the e -.roneous method of using good old fundmentl gospel words to disguise deceptive beliefs. Mny who cn freely use such terms s "conversion", "Word of God", "inspirtion" nd "prech the gospel" men something very different from the preching of such men s Elder Benjmin Rndll nd Elder Pul Plmer. Some thought ws given to worldliness nd seculrism which breed modernism. The more dedly enemies enter through the doors opened by loose living. A few ppers hve been written. Extensive plns hve been lid to eover the subject thoroughly by the help of lrge number of ble Free Will Bptists. The Commission feels its chief duty is to encourge qulified people to submit mteril on the needed subjects. We hve not sought to edit nything. We the members hve lso written some mteril which we hope to get before our people through our ppers. Apprísø ol Our Denotníntíon Víth Respect to Líberlism The Free Will Bptist Denomintion is gretly blessed in tht we hve no gret problem over modernism t the present time. Certin fctors ply prt in this picture. One chrcteristic of our churches in the pst tht hs helped us is conservtivism. This in itself is no prticulr virtue, but it hs given us the tendency to steer rily from the liberl ides of modernists. Alignment with the Ntionl Assocition of Evngelicls hs helped mke us lre of certin dngers. This group of denomintions helps lert members to the peril of modernism. t keeps us wre of the trends creted by its ntgonistic counterprt-the Ntionl Council of Churches. The fi m position tken by the Free Will Bptist Bible College on the fundmentls of our fith is strongly in our fvor. Current concern over future denomintionl loylty to our historic beliefs chiefly rises from this fctor. We find tht modernism's biggest enemy mong Free Will Bptists is the Bible College. The orthodoxy of our denomintionl leders is n encourging sign. We feel tht those now leding the work of the Ntionl Assocition will never betry the cuse by being soft on liberlism. However, s we see it, Free Will Bptists re pproching crossrods. Within this decde dditionl mesures should be tken to insure our future ginst modernism or else trends towrd liberlism might set the stge for flse doctrine in yers to come. t is not enough to be reltively free from the peril now. Sfegurds should be creted ginst future encrochments. One of our wekest points might be our inevitble drive for progress. All of us must recognize tht the only rel progress mde is spiritul nd scripturl progress. Suggestíons tor the Future Free Will Bptists must pry nd work for revivl of Bible stndrds in Christin living. Gret stress should be given to the holy hert nd seprted life of the Lord's people. Worldliness should be defined nd churches should cll on members to tow the line. High spiritul stndrds should be mintined in the ministry. Brotherly love should be exercised in deling with the problems of worldliness. 8 Vitol Vitomins (Continucd from Pgo 3) n the New Testment there re number of different kinds of contcts pictured. Let me cll ttention to twci of them. First, we find the ccident type. There re no ccidents s fr s God is concerned, but we know wht we men when we use the term. Consider the time when Jesus met the Smritn womn t the well. From humn point of view we would gree tht this meeting seemed ccidentl. Our Lord cpitliz'ed on n opportunity to spek to the Smritn womn nd to revel His Messihsship to her. Ech new dy is filled with opportunities. We do not know ll of those we re going to mêet. We do not know who will come to our door. We do not know who my come tö' our plce of business or even whom wê my meet on the street. Perhps it is someone we hve never met before or sofireone we my know but hve filed to witness to or invite to come to our church nd our Sundy School. Perhps he does not even know where to go to Sundy School. Here is n opportunity. We must mke the most of our ccidentl contcts. But we hsten to sy tht even though every church member mde the most of his ccidentl contcts tht would not be enough. Plnned contcts re lso necessry. There re res in your community tht you would never enter unless you specificlly plnned to go there. A scripturl illustrtion of premeditted contct is the one where A rdrew brings his brother Peter to Jesus. Tht ws plnned contct tht pid gret dividends. f we re.going to do the job tht God hs for us to do in our community, we must mke the most of plnned contcts. This will men n orgnized visittion progrm for the church nd the Sundy Schoolwith leders, those who will give ssignments; with those who will keep records; with those who will follow up. Every techer should be expected to keep in constnt contct with the pupils of his clss. Tht is one dvntge of hving clsses tht re smll. The techer cn.know the wherebouts of every Pupil every single week. t ws my privilege severl weeks go to serve s judge for the Ntionl Sundy School Attendnce Contest sponsored by Christin Life mgzine. One thing bout tht contest stood out in prticulr. As judges we commented upqn it while going over the books nd discovered tht no mtter how mny different ides or gdgets Sundy School used, none brought results like visittion. Not tht the other methods, rightly used, do not bring results but with or without them, visittion ment the most for success. The more people mking contcts, the more contcts tht were mde, the greter were the results, lmost without n exception. Vitmin D fs Depenrlbility, the gretest P ce 8 bility tht ny mn cn hve. Where tht trit is lcking, it mkes little difference wht other bilities mn my possess. t does not mke much difference how well one cn tech or sing or spek or usher or nything else if he is not on the job when the job needs to be done. God is looking for men nd women tody with vitmin D, men who re there on the job week, in, week out, long fter the glmour hs worn off. God is looking for men nd women with vitmin D in the summer. He is looking for such men nd women in hunting seson. A person who thinks more of fish, deer or n elk thn he thinks of the soul of boy or girl hs no business teching Sundy School clss. We must hve vitmin D-Dependbility. There re mny men nd women of gret tlent who hve been lid on the shelf becuse God could not count on them. t is required of stewrd tht he be found fithful. Dependbility nd fithfulness re vitl for the success of ny progrm. Vitmin E trs Efficiency. Oh, how we need it in the Church of Jesus Christ tody. t grieves my hert to see the crelessness, on the Lord's Dy of people who re meticulous in crrying out the seculr duties of the week. How often we see those who would not think of being lte to work on Mondy morning coming lte to Sundy School even when they hve responsibilities. How often we see those who would not sty home from work on,mondy becuse of slight hedche or compny use such excuses for bsenting themselves from their plce of responsibility on the Lord's Dy. Do you know wht n excuse is? t's "the skin of reson stuffed with lie." Tht is wht mny people hnd God for their crelessness in crrying out their duties for God. Two Scripture verses re especilly p-, plicble here. One is found in Jeremih 48:10 which sys, "Cursed be he tht doeth the work of the Lord negligently." Jeremih ws not tlking to the wicked, but to the people of God. He sid there is curse upon the people of God tht re creless nd negligent in the wy they do the work of the Lord. The other is Romns 12:11 "Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord." There re five "keys" of efficiency. The first key of efficiency for the Christin is pfyer. The second key is plnning. We must pln. To pln mens to think. We must lern to think in two different wys: lone nd with others. Mny hve lerned to do one but not to do both. Third is progrm. We must hve progrm. Wht re we plnning to do s Sundy School this yer? Wht re our long-rnge plns? Wht re the detils? Who is going to work them out? The fourth key of efficiency is promotion. We my hve the best progrm in the world but we hve to be sure tht it hs hnds nd feei. Evo y leder should find out tht if progrm is to be success someone hs to push. How re we going to push? With publicity. Here is our lst key of efficiency. We must let people know we re in business, where our church is, when our progrm strts, wht is tking plce. Nobody ever goes to store unless he knows there is store there. Nobody ever goes to Sundy School unless he knows there is one there. t is our job to let people know tht there is one there nd tht we re operting. We promote with publicity in mny wys-through nnouncements in meetings, through the mil, though rdio, through the newspper. The best publicity of ll is stisfied customer. So we must be certin tht we re tking cre of those who come to us-l-by being friendly, by introducing them to others, by giving them tht which is help to them in their spiritul life. Yitmin F s "First Things First." n Mtthew 6:33 the Lord sys, "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, nd His righteousness; nd ll these things shll be dded unto you." f we will put first things first, ll of these other vitmins will be tken cre of. Our gret need is not lot of new methods but renewed men to do the things tht they lredy know ought to be done. Bsiclly, most of our problems re spiritul. trust tht we shll use the vitmins rve need in our olvn life, in our own Sund:ry School nd in our own church in order tht our community my see the difference in our Sundy School. The Absentee "Sonreone is bsent," the Shepherd sid, As over my clss book He bent His hed: "For severl Sundys bsent, too, So tell me, techer, wht did you do?" " didn't cil s perhps should, wrote some crds, but they did no good, tr've never herd nd she never cme, So decided to drop her nme." He nswered grvely, "A flock ws mine, A hundred-no, there were ninety nd nine, Fol one ws lost in the drk nd cold: So sought tht sheep which hd left the fold. The pth ws stony nd edged with thorns; My feet were wounded, nd bruised nd torn, But kept on seeking, nor counted the cost; And oh, the joy when found the, ost." Thus spoke tlie Shepherd in tender tone, looked nd lo- ws ll lone; But God vision hd sent to me, To show His will towrd the bsentee. -Unknown CoNrect

Those who hve been educted by modernists nd hve hd close ssocition with them should mke their lignment with orthodoxy nd dispprovl of theologicl liberlism known clerly nd unquestionbly. Young men should be discourged from going to liberl institutions, prticulrly for theologicl trining. Pstors should doctrinlly prepre their people to "give reson for the hope." The minister should tke his stnd ginst evolution nd other errors in the public schools. Mo e cre should be tken by ordining councils in ordintion. Furthermore when o e's doctrines re questionble this group should exmine. A precher of sound doc-- trine will gldly resíte his position. 'We must be kept wre tht we need more thn just eduction. We need the right kind of eduction. Therefore, constnt vigilnce should be kept over ll our F ee Will Bptist institutions. All of us need to mintin strong spiritul witness nd testimony. Forceful, effective evngelism nd mode nism do not mix. "The best defense is often strong offense." 10 Lous H, MourroN Q. My mother hs been ttending some meetings of group who identify themselves by the nme rújnityt'. She hs entered subscription to fheir mgzine in my nme nd sends it to me. Some of the rticles which hve red sound pletty good but ltm not just sure bout this group or sect. Vht do you think of their doctrine? A. Unity tkes its plce mong gret number of other fst growing flse cults., too, received their mgzine which someone hd sent me without my knowledge nd my dvice to you is to hve nothing to do with this group t ll. They deny the fundmentls of the Bible. The pln of slvtion through the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ is not only not tught but denied. Leve them lone, brek off ny reltions which you my hve with them nd do it quick lest Stn get greter hold on you through this stnic cult. Advise your mother to do the sme nd pry much for her. Q. Recently my fmily nd moved to city where there is no Free VYi Bptist Church. We re wondering just where we should go to church. A. m gld tht you gree tht you should nd must go somewhere to church even though one of your own fith is not to be found. cnnot dvise you s to ny single denomintion since locl congregtion of mny denomintions oftimes depends so much upon the locl pstor nd his ledership. Since so mny flse doctrines re being tught tody you must be creful, but serch out good, sound, Bible-believing church where the truth is tught concerning the deth, resurrectioq.nd coming gin of the Lord Jesus Christ. You cnnot be too creful in your selection of the chu ch where you go for spiritul food. Q. ÌYe hve precher who will not llow Legue group or Sundy School clss or the Girls' Auxiliry to hve ny kind of liftle socil gthering t the church. fs there ny plce in the Bible where we re told tht we cnnot hve young people's socil in the church? Our only reâson for wnting fhis is to promofe fellowship nd perhps provide supervised recretion for our young folks. A. personlly hve never been ginst providing supervised recretion for the young people nd socil gtherings for Pece 10 not only the young but for the old s wel1. The rgument hs been tht the young people re going to find their fun nd recretion somewhere, Why not provide it nd hve it supervised by mture Christins? However mny disgree. Perhps your pstor uses 1 Corinthins 11.:22 nd the reminder of tht chpter where Pul sks, "Wht? hve ye not houses to et nd to drink in? or despise ye the church of God nd shme them tht hve not." These words, without ny doubt, re cler nd plin nd there is the dnger tht your socil events my become the big things in your church while the spiritul things re neglected. f your pstor preches the gospel, condemns sin in every form nd hs s his min pssion the winning of souls, then stick by him nd thnk God for him. Q. feel thf m Christin nd yet do not belong to church. Do you think must become member of the church to be good Chrisfin? A. Joining the church will not mke you good or bd Christin if there re such. You must be born gin (John 3:7) to become Christin. Then, believe, if we hve relly hd n experience with God we will seek the fellowship of those with kindred minds. Perhps you re looking for perfection in church. You will not find it. Since we re quite imperfect ourselves we surely must ber with nd overlook the flws nd imperfections of even our church leders, The New Testment with its exmple of the erly church teches tht it is our duty (your duty) to serch out Bible-believing church tht preehes the gospel of Christ in ll its fulness, where we cn flnd sweet fellowship nd ffilite ourselves therewith. Q. Our church does not ffilite wlth the Núionl Assocition of Free \{ill Bptists. Some of our members sy they cn see no benefit in it. Wht sy you? A. Spce here certinly will not permit detiled nswer. Let me suggest tht you write to Executive Deprtment, 3801 Richlnd Ave., Nshville 5, Tenn., for: full informtion. But briefly: Any Free Will Bptist Church should be interested in hving pft in determining the policy of our Mission Bords, both home nd foreign; the sending forth of missionries in fulfillment of the Gret Commission (Mtt. 28:19); every Free 'Will Bptist Church should tke n ctive interest in our Bible College nd the trining of young men nd women for Ch istin service. These re just few resons not even to mention the interest tht should be mnifested in our ntionl Sundy School Bord, the Legue work nd the Ntionl'Womn's Auxiliry work. Hving trd experience s techer of psychology nd Christin eduction, he hs n dequte knowledge of the theoreticl blsis of his subject. The book, however, is more thn theoreticl discussion of Christin ccluction; it is remrkbly prcticl. The trthor believes tht the pstor is the key person in the progrm of Christin eduction nd tht the ultimte responsibility for the ecluctionl progrm of the church rests upon the pstor. He discusses the possibilitics for eductionl work through the Sundy school, the vction church school, the church membership clss, the youth cmp, nd other phses of the church progrm. The eder will flnd gret del of common sense pplied to the probiems of conducting n eductionl progrm in the church. Report of Temperqnce Committee WHentes the tide of Alcoholism is sweeping over our Ntion, flooding our Ntion's Cpitl nd engulfing our youth, we recommend tht Free Will Bptists throughout the Ntion rise up to combt this enemy of the soul nd gency of Stn. We should ttck lcoholism from the pulpit nd by ligning ourselves with orgniztions tht hve pledged to bring bout the defet of this enemy. We recognize the fct tht worldliness hs mde inrods mong Free Will Bptists. Tody we snction prctices tht were objected to strongly by our foulding fthers. We recommend more definite stnd ginst worldliness by our ministry. The morl stndrds of Americ re lower now thn t ny oiher time in the history of our country. One of the mjor contributing fctors is the obscene literture tht ppers on lmost every newsstnd nd mgzine rck in Ame ic. Free Will Bptists everywhere should tke definite stnd ginst this evil. We need to tke more definite stn<i ginst the indecent mode of pprel tht seems to be the trend of our times. This, too, hs contributed to our lowered morl stndrds. Relizing tht they could be more effectul witness for the cuse of Christ the ministry nd lity of our denomintion shquld ly upon the ltr the use of tobcco in ny form. Speciol Resolution Adopted WHrn'.s, in the pst, mny needs of our denomintion hve been supplied through ntionl projects pron.roted by vrious bords or gencies, be it therefore resolved, tht we express sincere pprecition to ll bords nd gencies tht hve sponsored nd completed such projects, but, WHenEes, there hs been creful nlysis of our overll denomintionl progrm nd considertion of our ntionl fund rising, nd, WH Rr,es, there hs been development in our denomintionl progrm on both the stte nd ntionl level, which hs brought into existence growing number of denomintionl gencies, nd, Wn,Res, there re now t lest ten ntionl gencies tht engge in fund rising, not counting the stte fund rising gencies, nd, WHenee.s, some of this is in dupliction, nd, Wunnees. the present need is for n undergirding of pryer, trining, nd stewrdship t the locl church level, therefore, be it Resor, veo, tht ech bord or gency conûne its ntionl fund rising to its own re of responsibility. Be rr runrner RESoLVED, tht the Womn's Auxiliry, Mste 's Men, YPA, GTA, Legues, Sundy Schools, etc., be encourged to continue their support of ll phses of the.ntionl work through the locl church. 14 THE RESOLUTON. "'Wnsnees the Commission on Chplins hs been chrged by the Ntionl Assocition with certin re of responsibility, nd "Wnenees the commission hs met with rel difficulty in fulfllling this responsibility due to the lck of seminry-level trining within our denomintion, "TtrensFone be it resolved tht studyconmittee be ppointed by the Modertor to explore the possibility of estblishing Free Will Bptist Seminry nd report bck with their recommendtions t the next session of the Ntionl Assocition." To begin with, this committee hs been fced with the problem of exctly wht res were intended for our study. We did not wnt to go too fr fleld from the re speciflclly designted by the resolution, since to do so might seem presumptuous on our prt. The resolution chrged us simply to "explore the possibility". Note tht the word is not "need", or "interest", or "dvisbility", or "methods", or "resons for or ginst" estblishing seminry. The re of "possibility", of course, cnnot entirely be studied prt frorn some considertion of some of these others-nd we hve given some degree of thought to some of them; but considering the chrge, we hve intentionlly ref ined from exploring these other res to ny degree greter thn necessry to determine the "possibility". n considering whether or not it is possible to estblish FWB seminry, we fi st must interpret the question to men "estblish immeditely" or "soon", since we ll know tht if it just mens "estblish sometime", ll things re possible nd there would be no need of study to see whether it will somedy be possible to estblish such seminry. Secondly, we lso must interpret the problem to del with estblishing n "ccredited seminry" or '.'stndrd seminry", since it is lredy obvious tht it is possible for nyone who desires to estblish substndrd seminry nytime he chooses. The existence of mny sutr-stndrd seminries which offer spurious degrees-such s Lighthouse, Pioneer, etc.-ttests this conclusion fully. Tneneronn, we dd these qulifictions to the originl question nd feel it hs been our responsibility to explore only the possibility of estblishing, in the ner Íuture, stndørd (or ccredited) seminry by our denomintion. With these qulifictions in mind, it becomes obvious tht the primry question, then, is to see wht the requirements for n ccredited seminry re. Only by so doing cn we determine whether or not it is possible to begin seminry with stndrd cdemic progrm. We hve crefully studied the requirements set up by the Pece 14 Report of Seninry Study Comnittee Americn Assocition of Theologicl Schools for n ccredited seminry. n so doing, it becme immeditely pprent to us tht the toughest requirements in tht re for us to meet re in the mtter of fculty qulifictions. n the flrst plce, it must be understood tht when seminry is ccredited by AATS, it mens tht the mjority of its students must come from regionlly ccredited senior colleges. Such "feeder" institution for seminry the Free Will Bptists do not hve, nd cnnot soon hve. Of course, ccredittion for two yers (Juniorcollege level) is firly esy to get-nd our Bibl: College hs wht is tntmount to this t present. But four-yer ccredittion is n entirely different questionl The min reson is simply tht the regionl ccrediting ssocition requires tht the deprtment heds in college must hve n erned nd legitimte doctor's degree. When one thinks on this mtter for nroment, it soon ppers wht n extrordinry difficulty this pïesents. To iliustrte, our Free Will Bptist Bible College hs ten different deprtments t piesent. Tht mens, then, tht for the Bible College to become regionlly cc edited for its four-yer progrm, it would be necessry to hire fen persons with erned doctortes n the next plce, not only re there hrd fculty requirements for n undergrdute college which we cnnot now meet, we must lso consider fculty requirements for the seminry itself. The AATS requires minimum of lour professors for seminry, nd these must hve legitimte doctorte in the field of religion! To summrize, then, our first nd perhps hrdest problem is tht we do not hve nerly enough persons either with the stted qulifictions or t present even ner to the ttining of the qulifictions to consider soon beginning. While it would seem hrdly necessry to go into other fctors (with the first one so prohibitive), we will mention briefly some others. A second mjor problem relting to the question of the possibility of estblishing seminry is tht of finnce. For one thing, simply librry requirements lone will demnd n enormous expenditure. For exmple, ou Bible College, in order to become ccredited by the Assocition of Bible Colleges, hd to push hrd to ttin the 8,000 volume minimum llowed by tht ssocition. But to become regionlly ccredited so it could feed n ccredited seminry would mke it necessry to more thn double the present number, even though the Bible College librry is lredy the lrgest ccumultion of books in the denomintion. Such n expnsion would require t lest $50,000. Then the seminry librry would hve to hve librry which would cost gret del more thn tht gin. Not only will librry requirements demnd lrge expenditure, bnt mny other res will require lrge sums of money. To meet regionl ccrediting stndrds, for exmple, ll those ten deprtment heds we mentioned would hve to be pid ntinínutm of $4,500 per yer. Tht slry figure lone would thus rech round $50,000 per yer-not counting other techers thn deprtment heds. And the slries of the seminry fculty would rech similr nnul mount. So we estimte-nd we believe conservtively-tht to begin operting stndrd seminry nd ccredited "feeder" college would dd t lest $100,000 to our denomintion's nnul eductionl expenses-not including initil outly for librry, cmpus, equipment, nd the like. While it my not be necessry to bring in third fctor in the question of possibility, we do wish to point out briefly tht it is lso very importnt to decide whether or not such seminry would be possible from the stndpoint of hving sufficient students. Perhps this re touches more hevily on the question of "need" thn 'þossibility"- but since it would be obviously impossible to operte seminry without students, we must t lest consider the question. Let us look, for exmple, on the number of Free Will Bptist students in the United Sttes who re presently in seminry. While we hve no wy of ccurtely counting the number, we would estimte tht there re probbly t present not over hlf-dozen Free Will Bptist ministeril students working on their B. D. degrees. Hving sid these things, we must now stte some further conclusions bout which \\'e re eqully sure. While estblishing seminry very soon seems out of the question, we must not let the difficulties invôlved câuse us to feel it is n impossible tsk which must be forgotten. This committee feels tht our denomintion needs to look forwrd to estblishing seminry s soon s it is possible to mke beginning which cn t lest seriously look forwrd to being "stndrd". Our denomintion, which hs for yers now encourged new ministers to get four yers of trining t our Bible College, cn well fford to work into progrm where the suggested period of trining will be sever yers insted of four. Such progrm would give us fr more mture d better-prepred ministers going into the pnlpits. F{owever, it is not enough jusf to "look forwrd" to it. f definite promotion of the ide is not given, nd if some steps re not tken to work towrd its ccomplishment, we will lwys just be "looking forwrd" to it. n conclusion, we wish to recommend tht committee be ppointed for the purpose of giving further study to the whole mtter on broder scopq, nd tht it shll be chrged to report nd mke recommendtions to the Ntionl Assocition s is deemed necess y nd good. Vol.7 Äugut, 1960 No. l0 personqllv Your Executive Secretory Reports \ At the Ntionel Assocition in Cliforni your executive secretry gve reporr of his work nd the work of the Executive Deprtment. With grtitude to the Lord, we were ble to report very successful yer nd the best udit in the history of the deprtment. This by no mens hs been the work of one individul. Ech member of the Executive Committee long with ech of you s Free will Bptists, who hve supported this work both with your pryers nd cont ibutions, hs mde this report possible. Since mny of you were unble to ttend our Ntionl Assocition this yer, wonld like to shre with you in this column portion of my report tht ws given t the Convention. This portion of the report hs to do with th ee observtions which hve mde since ssuming the offìce of Executive Secretry. First, there is desperte need for closing of rnks in the work of our Ntionl Assocition. r believe tht some progress hs been mde in this respect, but we must not let up in our efforts to relize united front. The chllenge which is presented to Free.will Bptists tody is tremendous. To meet such chllenge, we must move forwrd-together. Another need lies in the field of finnce. t ppers tht our finnce hs not kept pce with our rncresed ctivity. Some djustment here is immeditely necessry! We must either do better job in the finncil support of the work represented by the Ntionl Assocition, or we must consider curtilment of our denomintionl ctivities. Actully, only few of our churches give regulrly nd systemticlly to the work of our Ntionl Assocition. Whtever the cuse for this, if we re tô meet the needs of this yer, we must enlist more of ou churches in the finncil support of our denomintionl ctivities. Finlly, observe tht there is the need cross our denomintion for deeper consecrtion nd personl holiness. t is lrming to note the mny instnces where open sin is tolerted-sometimes mong the clergy. Besides this, the e is the constnt pressure to compromise with the world. n some res the compromise hs lredy been relized. Revivl is needed, but revivl will never come so long s these conditions exist. Let us, therefore, chllenge our people to live clen, consecrted Christin lives. Surely, this is the pthwy to revivl. Convention Sidelights _ There were mny impressive things boît our convention this yer, but perhps the most impressive thing ws the spirit of hrmony tht previled. All delibôrtioirs were crried out in spirit of love nd oneness, mking it possible for the worship services to be the high point of the convention. This is s it should be nd thè convention proved to be rich spiritul blessing. But, let us tke closer look t the spirit of this convention. Wht brought to this Ntionl gthering spirit of love nd oneness? As prticipnt in the wõrk of our Ntionl Assocition, permit me to mke few personl observtions. think one fctor tht must be considered is the record of the pst. For the lst two or three yers, v/e hve experienced rther "stormy" sessións. This hs not been ltogether wholesome for the work of the Ntionl Assocition. perhps, this yer, our people felt tht if we were to relly ccomplish nything to the qlory of God spirit of love must previl. This conviction helped - the -unity of the convention. Then there ws the mtter of explosive situtions in certin prts of the wo ld tht directly ffected two of our mission fields-cub nd Afric. This, coupled with the poiiticl sitution in our own country where Romn ctholic is cndidte for the Presidency of the United Sttes, injected sober note into the proceedings. t ppered tht ll in ttendnce felt tht this ws time fo serious work nd whole-herted dediction. Finlly, we must remember the pryers of God's people in behlf of the convention. No doubt, this.plyed the lrger prt in the success of this Ntionl Assocition. know for fct tht mny of our people everywhere hd been prying fithfully tht God ould breth upon the convention spirit of brotherly lovè nd unity. God ws fithful nd nswered our pryers! - Let us be grteful to God for the blessings of this convention which will men so much to the work of our denomintion in this next yer. Aucusr, P ce 15
