1 The Good News from SJB Mark Your Calendar Skaggs Catholic Center Open House November 4 10:00am - 2:00pm JDCHS Presents Grease November 10, 11 & 12 7:00pm JDCHS Auditorium NO SCHOOL Professional Educator s Day & Veteran s Day November 11 Mass with SJBMS November 22 9:00am Formal Uniform Thanksgiving Break November Today is the Solemnity of All Souls a day we remember all the faithful who have died. In today s reading it says, I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth (Genesis 9:13). The Bible tells us that the rainbow did not occur until after Noah s flood. God gave it to us as a promise that He would never destroy the earth with a flood again. Rainbows are one of the most extraordinary and beautiful natural wonders. Author Maya Angelou said, God puts rainbows in the clouds so that each of us in the dreariest and most dreaded moments can see a possibility of hope. Saint John the Baptist Elementary raised almost $800 (in addition to gifts) for The Celebration Project during Red Ribbon Week. Thank you for your generosity! From Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church: Dear Mrs. Ward and Third Grade Classes of Saint John the Baptist Elementary, Thank you so much for the generous donation of $1,300 from your Parable of the Talents project from last year to our parish social justice fund. Your generosity will allow us to reach out and help so many more families than we would have been able to help otherwise. Thanks to you, we will not have to turn away any family who asks us for help. By helping our parish families, we are showing them the unconditional love that Christ has for each of us. In reaching out to others by making this generous donation, you have shown yourselves to be true followers of Christ. Your continued support for the parish is making a tremendous difference in the lives of others. Please know that we will continue to keep you and your families in our prayers. May the Lord Jesus continue to bless you and keep you and your family in the beautiful autumn season. Sincerely, Msgr. Joseph Mayo Pastor My sincerest apologies to those who were not able to attend Monday s Halloween Class Celebrations due to no siblings being allowed. It was brought to my attention with the morning PreKindergarten celebrations that siblings, cousins, friends and family, were planning to attend, and I was remiss in communicating the school s expectation in advance.
2 Principal s Weekly Letter (cont.) To clarify: - Only students enrolled at Saint John the Baptist Elementary may participate in their individual class activities, field trips, etc. - Siblings, cousins, etc. (not enrolled at SJB Elementary) may not attend SJB Elementary class activities, field trips, etc. held during school hours - Siblings, cousins, etc. (who are enrolled at SJB Elementary) may not attend classroom activities or field trips outside of their own class - Non school-age children (siblings, cousins, etc.) are not permitted to accompany parents who volunteer during the school day in the classroom, on field trips or other activities The reasons for the above are twofold. First, additional children in the classroom are a distraction to our students and hinder activities planned by the teacher. Second, it presents a safety liability to the Skaggs Catholic Center to have un-enrolled students of any age present in our classrooms, at activities or on field trips during school hours. Thank you for your understanding of these important safety measures The temperature has dropped this week, and winter weather will be arriving soon! Please ensure that your child, once applicable, brings cold weather gear to school, as students will go outside for recess unless the temperature falls below 20 degrees and/or the PM 2.5 (particulate matter) exceeds 55.4 (unhealthy.) To learn more and/or watch the PM2.5 thermometer that the school follows, go to - Utah Air Monitoring and click on Current. If your son/daughter is part of a sensitive group, please contact your child s teacher and/or me. With winter weather, Saint John the Baptist Elementary historically sees a rise in the number of tardies. If, for some emergency reason, school will not convene, television and radio stations (KSL, KDYL, and KALL) will broadcast the message regarding school closures, and you will be notified by /phone. Should school be in session, it is the prerogative of each parent to decide whether or not their child(ren) will attend school on days of severely inclement weather. Saint John the Baptist Elementary will honor the parents decision. The school, however, will not give a grace period for tardies due to inclement weather. Because attendance is a legal record coupled with students traveling from various areas, students will be considered tardy if they arrive after 8:00am. Saint John the Baptist Elementary s Christmas Programs have been finalized as follows: Monday, December 12: Third Grade 7:00pm (SJB Church) Tuesday, December 13: First Grade 7:00pm (SJB Church) Thursday, December 15: PreKindergarten AM 10:15am; PM 2:15pm (Multipurpose Room) and Grades 4-5 7:00pm (JDCHS Auditorium) Friday, December 16: Second Grade (Nativity Play) Times TBA (JDCHS Little Theater) Wednesday, December 21: Kindergarten (The Polar Express) 11:45am (Gymnasium) The Skaggs Catholic Center s Open House is this Friday, November 4 from 10:00am-2:00pm. If you know someone interested in checking out the campus, this is a great opportunity for prospective families to visit the schools, have a guided tour and more! Congratulations to the 4 th and 5 th Graders who achieved 1 st Quarter Honor Roll (3.5 and above) and Honorable Mention ( )! In Christ, Nikki Ward, Principal
3 Issue 13 November 2, 2016 SJB Family Activity The students gathered today for the 2nd Quarter SJB Family Activity! This quarter's focus was on the schoolwide learning activity of being a learner. The students played a game, which enabled them to learn about their family, and then made a coat of arms depicting both their individuality and commonality as a school family. The coat of arms will be displayed in the multipurpose room, so check them out when you visit SJB Elementary! Third Grade Dioramas Honor Wilbur, Charlotte and Templeton Too! It's as clear as a word spun into a web...our 3rd graders did a TERRIFIC job on this assignment! Check out some more pictures on our Facebook Playground Fun! The new SJB Elementary playground opened on Monday! There were lots of smiles and thumbs up for our great new space.

5 SJB Elementary student selected as Ski Utah Ambassador for 5th Grade Passport Program Hi, I m Emily Grace. I am exited to be Ski Utah's fifth grade passport ambassador this season. My job is to get Utah's fifth graders up into the mountains to experience the Greatest Snow on Earth for only $35! As kids, we have the choice to play outside and just keep healthy. We are very lucky to live in Utah where we have easy access to all 14 ski resorts. I think it is a great opportunity to have 3 days free at the 14 resorts in Utah. For the sixth graders, the passport is offered for one day of free skiing and boarding at the 14 resorts in Utah. To apply for this chance, go to skiutah.com/passport and complete the application. If you do, you will be able to ski or board in Utah's powdery mountains. It is great for kids who are just learning and for those who have been doing it for years.for those who have only skied or boarded at one resort, it is a great opportunity to explore what Utah's slopes offer all over the state. If you do not own equipment, I would do season rentals over day rentals, it saves you money and the hassle. The passport also includes discounts on ski and snowboard lessons, rentals, buddy passes and fun off the mountain. If you have questions please feel free to stop me in the hall.
