P a ge 2 Senior Pastor s Report to the 2013 Charge Conference Hughey Reynolds, Senior Pastor Below is the report that I turned in prior to Latham s December 3 rd Charge Conference, comprised of the Board of Stewards convened by the District Superintendent. It highlights ministries I have engaged in as your pastor in fulfillment of my ordination as an elder to Service, Word, Sacrament, and Order: Word: During the past year, I have preached in one or more of the morning worship services at Latham every Sunday except three, two while I was on vacation and one following surgery in late June. I have shared preaching responsibilities with the associate pastor. Until June, I preached primarily in the Morning Watch and Traditional services and Scott Smyth preached in the contemporary service, The Orchard. With an appointment of a new associate pastor, Chris Martin, in June, I began to preach at least once a month in the contemporary service as well. Another change in preaching is that Chris Martin and I plan our sermons in conversation with our music and worship minister Chris Klaus. The results have been positive, especially the increased involvement of lay members in worship leadership. Sacrament: We have had one baptism during the year and 6 professions of faith. We will confirm 9 students on December 22. We celebrate Holy Communion weekly in Morning Watch and monthly in the other morning worship services. In addition, we celebrate Holy Communion on Maundy Thursday and Christmas Eve each year. Chris Martin and I offer homebound members Holy Communion when we visit them monthly and on other occasions when they request it. Order: Latham reorganized around our mission and vision this year. We developed 6 Ministry Teams, designated a full-time staff member as ministry team leader and elected a lay coordinator for each team: Worship, Communicate, Connect, Discipleship (including Youth and Children), In-reach, and Outreach. In this structure, ministry continues if a volunteer lay coordinator moves or becomes inactive. Also, ministry teams that have active coordinators are far more effective than those left to staff leaders to work alone. Chris Martin has stepped into his new role as minister of discipleship and organized a small discipleship that meets every week to share how they ve grown and struggled and to hold one another accountable in practicing spiritual disciplines. Service: My service focus has been promoting local food production and distribution to eliminate food insecurity. I devoted many of hours to the development of the Farmers Market at Latham to help small-scale farmers market their produce and stay solvent. I worked in and enlisted members to help with Society of St. Andrew potato drops and bean drops to bag surplus food to feed the hungry. I will serve on the Society of St. Andrew s national board of directors beginning in I assisted in a Children s Mission Monday during the summer at Morris Elementary where we worked to build raised bed gardens that will be used as part of classroom instruction. I have participated in bagging backpacks for distribution to 3 rd graders at Morris. Plan for Continuing Education: In 2013, I completed a 3-year peer based program of continuing education called Ending Well, Finishing Strong, which was coordinated and partially funded through the Institute for Clergy Excellence. In 2014, the church staff and I will participate in the Transformational Shift Project with Ron Martoia through May. For the remainder of the year I plan to pursue studies and coaching in creative design to help lead Latham to respond to the anticipated growth that will accompany the relocation of Grissom High School to a site across the Parkway from the church.

These can be arranged and used on Sundays when no flowers have been purchased. LIFETREE CAFE: Andy White reported that he and Jane Smith have made presentations recently at the Orchard and Liturgical Services regarding the programs offered at the LifeTree Cafe. In 2013 the average weekly attendance at LifeTree was 12 with approximately $100 in donations. In 2014 the average weekly attendance has been 24 and the monthly donations increased to $170 but recently fell back to $90. The goal is to have full capacity (40+ patrons per week). FINANCE: Buddy Bishop distributed two charts: (1) 1st Quarter 2014 Income VS Projected Income; (2) Income to Date 2013 VS Mr. Bishop thanked Ken Stephens for keeping a weekly check on the church's cash

P a ge 5 BOS Minutes, continued. flow as well as other financial matters and for preparing these charts. A copy of the charts is attached to the record copy of these minutes. It is obvious by looking at the chart Income to Date 2013 VS 2014 that the church is not doing as well financially in 2014 as it did in As of March 16, 2013 income to date was $179,290; as of March 16, 2014 income to date was $158,949. In summary Mr. Bishop advised that if income does not improve in April and May, a special meeting of the Board may be called to address needed actions. LONG RANGE PLANNIING COMMITTEE: Rev. Reynolds reported that the Long Range Planning Committee has had one meeting where Edith Pickens reported on current plans for relocating Grissom High School as well as other plans for school redistricting. A small group from the Long Range Planning Committee has been formed and has met to draw up goals and guidelines for this group. Rev. Reynolds reminded the Board members that we are now going on 15 years in which we have been paying on the capital debt. If it becomes necessary to have another fundraising campaign, this will be Latham's sixth campaign to pay off the capital debt. We need to pay off this capital debt as quickly as possible. He is confident that a large number of people will continue giving to the church when the capital debt is paid because we are currently splitting a tithe of our income rather than giving "from capital." This happens after multiple campaigns on the same debts. People will continue to give if we cast a strong vision for our future. Without a vision, the church cannot expect people to give. The church must look at how it invests in people's lives if it wants people to invest in the life of the church. Before we start looking at the development that will come with the relocation of Grissom High School, we must find a way to effectively reach the people who are here now. How can we do this? Rev. Chris Martin emphasized the ministries we need to strengthen first are: discipleship, worship, outreach, youth. All missions/ministries of the church will come under the umbrella of discipleship. Therefore we need to expand our discipleship. To do this, we need to bring people into the church and then DO SOMETHING WITH THEM. Hopefully this can be accomplished through the small groups. If people do not feel they are contributing to the church program, they will lose interest. PASTOR'S REPORT: Rev. Reynolds closed the meeting by reminding the Board members of a statement from Dwight L. Moody, who said, "the world has yet to see what God can do with one man totally dedicated to Christ. I am determined to be that man." OTHER BUSINESS: None Rev. Chris Martin closed the meeting with a prayer. The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Amma H. Barnes, Secretary THE NEXT MEETING OF THE BOARD OF STEWARDS WILL BE ON THURSDAY, MAY 29, 2014 AT 6:30 P.M. IN THE CHOIR ROOM.

P a ge 6 The End of Beth Nix s Song Mike Nix Many of you are not only saddened and shocked but also puzzled by the suddenness of Beth s passing that took us all by surprise, so I would like to explain. As you may know, Beth was struggling with memory loss. She suffered a stroke in 2001, at the young age of 51. For years we thought we had escaped with little lasting harm. As time went by we began to suspect otherwise. Problems with her memory began to be apparent as early as 2004 but we were confident it was the stroke and would not get worse. This hope proved forlorn a few years later as it became too difficult for her to continue her ministry in music and her tenure at Aldersgate UMC ended. She stayed at home for the next couple of years as her memory worsened and in 2011 she was finally diagnosed with dementia. Her familiar world of friends and family and home had begun to fade from her memory. She needed more and more care and attention to be safe and to cope with the absence of things familiar to her. Then there came a time about two years ago it became clear that Beth needed care at home while I was at work. Cara Mason, a very close friend and caregiver, stayed with Beth during the day throughout 2012 as I continued to work. Then I took leave from my job in January of 2013 to care full time for Beth and to travel to see family and friends as much as we could but even her family members and closest friends were becoming strangers to her. The decline accelerated noticeably in the latter half of She still loved music but had not been able to play her piano for several years. Her dazzling smile began to loose its luster. She had lost her home, her family, even her parents, her friends, and finally, to my deepest sorrow, me. She always longed to find them again I think, to find any place or face that would be familiar. It will be impossible for anyone to understand what she was going through, how lost she must have been, how frightened. Once near the end in a moment of lucidity she told a friend, You have no idea how bad it is in my head. I was told that while she yet could understand what was happening, she would tell friends not to tell me when she suffered a lapse. All the time I thought I was the caregiver, my beautiful Beth was still trying to protect and shield me. In January of 2014 we hoped that some adjustments in medications and environment would help Beth remain comfortable and content as her condition worsened. We elected to seek guidance in in this, and in taking other measures to give her peace. We were referred to a hospital in Decatur. Cara, Pam Hegwood, Beth s best friend from Saudi days, and I took Beth there where she was admitted Wednesday evening, Jan 8, for the evaluation. When we left her she was alert, calm and happy, smiling and chatting with the new friends she had made there (making friends instantly was one of her many great talents). The last I saw my sweet Beth like that was as she was led away to her room. We returned to Huntsville and about 10:30 that night I got a call from the hospital that Beth had fallen and suffered a head injury and was being sent to a nearby emergency room for treatment. Arriving at the ER in Decatur, Cara and I were told that Beth had a fracture on the back of her head and internal bleeding in the brain at two locations. She was barely if at all conscious due to the injury and sedation. Beth was airlifted to the Vanderbilt Medical Center (VMC) in Nashville early Thursday morning, where she was further treated for the injury in the VMC trauma ward and examined at length by a psychology team (mostly through interviews with me and Cara), a neurological trauma team, a medical team and eventually a palliative care team. The teams concluded that Beth was also suffering from vascular dementia and Alzheimer s as well as the injury to her brain. Blake, Cara, and Pam were with Beth and me the whole time, sustaining us with selfless love and care. Beth had only brief periods of restless consciousness and could barely communicate with us. On the rare instances when she would to take nourishment, we fed her chocolate ice cream and ice chips. We were transferred from the trauma ward to the Palliative Care Unit, Sunday, Jan 12. She sank into a state of deeper unconsciousness and would no longer wake at all. The VMC staff advised us that my Darling Beth would not recover from this state. We were stunned to be told she had perhaps a few weeks, certainly not months, left and that all we could do was make her as comfortable as possible. This advice was changed even

P a ge 7 Beth Nix, continued from page six from weeks to days as we left. The VMC Palliative Care staff did everything they could to make Beth comfortable and support us in any way that they could. Cara and Blake left the hospital Monday to prepare the house with the help of wonderful friends, making our bedroom into her care center. Hospice had been summoned by the VMC staff and responded with their customary expertise and efficiency, for which we are so grateful. Beth came to our home Tuesday afternoon by ambulance from the VMC. Cam had been released from duty at Ft. Bragg through the Red Cross and I kept telling Beth he was on the way and to please, please, hold on until he could get to her. Brave, determined girl, she did, through many seizures and desperate struggles to remain with us. Cam arrived Thursday afternoon and held his mom while he spoke to her. Shortly afterwards, as I, Blake, Cam, Julie, her sister, Michelle, her niece and her friends held her closely in our arms, my Love, my Heart, Beth Ellen Bost Nix, one day before her 64th birthday and 10 days before our 45th anniversary, slipped away to the home for which she had been searching for so long. 3 As many of her friends have said, she must be directing a choir for God in Heaven now. All of the cards and letters that have poured in to us attest to her loving, caring spirit, gentle heart and devotion to her ministry. So many talk of how she touched and changed their lives and always, always had time for anyone who needed comfort. Anyone who met her knew she was a very special person indeed. The song that was her life and ministry is stilled now, but the melody echoes through the many lives she touched and changed with love. She loved God, her family, her friends, music and life. She was the most beautiful woman, outwardly and inwardly, that I have ever known. Our most profound thanks to all of our family, neighbors and friends who have over the past years been so kind and understanding and helped us in so many ways. We found friendship, care and love wherever we turned. In loving memory, Mike Nix Lillie Latham Scholarship Scholarship Award The Lillie Latham Scholarship Committee will award a $500 scholarship to a student who is a member of Latham UMC. 9 P a ge 9 Health Kits Urgently Needed Last week The United Methodist Disaster Warehouse in Decatur, Ala., shipped all UMCOR kits to Sager Brown, the UMCOR Distribution Center in Baldwin, Louisiana. Executive Director of the UM Disaster Warehouse Rev. Ray Crump says, "We do not have any Health Kits in the warehouse. If there is a tornado anywhere in the seven Southern states, we cannot help with health kits. Help!" (Because of the recent tornados across the south, we need to assist with their need of Health Kits.) Local congregations are asked to help renew the supply by putting together health kits and shipping them to the UM Disaster Warehouse in Decatur. Instructions for the kits can be found at Individuals are also needed to volunteer on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday at the UM Disaster Warehouse. Rev. Crump adds that the UM Disaster Warehouse does have a supply of cleaning buckets. However, currently there are no health kits. He explains the importance of health kits saying, When a roof is damaged and a family has to move to an apartment, motel, or another house while their home is being repaired, they need from you one UMCOR cleaning bucket, and a health kit for each family member. The Red Cross will give a Comfort bag with some of the things you have in a Health Kit. But a small bar of soap will not last very long. After a washcloth has been used several times, it needs to be washed. This is when a second washcloth is needed. The UM Warehouse also has supplies to help local congregation's response after a disaster. The UM Disaster Warehouse also has free tarps and wooden strips to hold the tarps on roofs-with free roofing nails. These are free to your congregation to be the hands and feet of Jesus following a disaster. In addition, The Warehouse can provide your congregation free boxes to give to neighbors who have to pack up their belongings while homes are being repaired. You furnish the cellophane tape and a magic marker to label the boxes for their den, kitchen etc For more information or to schedule a drop off of health kits, call the UM Disaster Warehouse at Thank You Spring Clean-Up Volunteers! Thanks to the efforts of dedicated members of Latham, our church looked great for Easter! The exterior doors of the fellowship hall were painted. Kal s Gym and the basketball goals were cleaned, and landscaping was trimmed up. The workers included Kenny Callan, Martha Daniel, Jeff Langhout, Richard Peters, Jane Smith, and Gene Wells. A special thank you to Brian McGuire who brought three teenagers to help, thus making the spring clean intergenerational! Also, a special thank you to Ben Bentley who labored for over six hours (in the rain) with his pressure washer to make our sidewalks sparkle for Easter! Are you enjoying the Branch? Let us know what you would like to read.
