2 By Tom Waters, Division Supt. By Rick Uhlenkott, Editor My Story Remember that the Fall Meet is set for September 26, 2015 at the usual place: Covenant Presbyterian Church. Get more information at the 3D web site: After serving almost a year and a half as Super. it dawned on me that just maybe not all of you know about me and my model railroading career. It will sound a lot like those you ve heard before, and yet with a different twist or two. My brother in law, who was a brain surgeon, and much my senior, lived in Portland and had this model railroad in the third floor room of his rather small, 3500 sq. ft. house. Yes my brothers and I had a Lionel set before but man, this HO stuff was cool! A 4 x 8 up and over was built, with no scenery and was very boring. Then the most unusual thing happened. Girls, cars, collage, work, etc., you know the story. Around 1972 I managed to pick up a Model Railroader magazine and Sharon noticed that I thought model trains were neat. For some strange reason I still don t understand, she bought me a small inexpensive HO set as a Christmas present not knowing what she was starting. I found a local group building a layout in a guy s basement and I was off to the races. In 1999 I offered to help with the NMRA, PNR Regional Convention here in Boise (and I wasn t even a member). Sometime in the 90 s my friend Phil, and you must know who we are talking about, managed to award me a one year membership as a door prize. He was very sneaky that way. I am now starting my third layout, which will be two full decks in my 21 X 15 bonus room and will be built for operation. Along the way I hope to earn the additional four AP certificates needed for my MMR. Now I have heard folks say that there are organizations with much cheaper memberships than the NMRA. But, for all the friends and great times I ve had over the past, what, twenty plus years, there is no way I know to get that much bang for the buck! So to all of you that don t know me, I m still waiting to see ya. And for all of you that do know me, don t say anything to the others just yet. TUWVXYZ ET Our sponsor there moved on to a different place, which usually means we need to find a new venue. But it turns out they like us so much that they invited us to continue. Chris Mesa has designed some business card versions for us to consider. I've placed a number beside each card. Tom asks that you or snale him the numbers for your two favorites. He says that, depending on the results of the vote, we might use two or three of the designs.
3 Are you thinking about attending Portland in August? By Tom Waters We have been discussing the National convention for months. Are you one of those still sitting on the fence? If there is still a small chance that you might go but are having a difficult time deciding. Let me see if I can help you decide to attend. If you have never attended a National Train Show, you cannot imagine the little gem or gems you just might find for a price you can t pass up. (And here are my rules for buying something I find: 1. Do I like it? 2. Does it fit the era of my layout? 3. Will I kick myself tomorrow if I pass it up? Number 3 is usually the deciding factor!) Would you like a chance to visit with the folks from Walthers, Woodland Scenic s, Bar Mills, Horizon Hobbies, Kalmbach, Bachman, Mike s Train House, Kadee? You cannot imagine the home and club layouts that will be available. Just to go down under the Columbia George club layout is an amazing thing. I have never gone on a layout tour that I didn t see something totally unexpected. Now I am not a big clinic attendee sort of guy, and some did not exactly apply to my talents, but I have never come away from a clinic without some tidbit for use sooner or later. So here are a few tips if you are having trouble with the expense of a week in Portland: Stay in a campground, stay in Vancouver Washington, stay with family or friends. Eat at McDonalds or Costco, share room and gas expenses with one or two of your buddies. And my least liked option, attend only those days you can if you can t afford it all. Well, I can go on and on discussing previous Nationals I have been fortunate to attend. So I ll stop and let you contact me if you need further convincing. But one final attempt to convince you: I ll be there and I ll miss sharing a great time with you! ADVERTISING ADVERTISING RATES FOR ONE YEAR ARE: 2 X 3 1 /2" 3 X 3 1 /2" 4 X 3 1 /2" COMMERCIAL CLUB CLASSIFIED INDIVIDUAL PIKE SEND YOUR READY MADE AD (AS A GRAPHIC), OR I CAN LAY IT OUT FROM YOUR MOCKUP SUBSCRIPTIONS THIS PUBLICATION IS DISTRIBUTED TO ALL INTERESTED PARTIES, MEMBERS OR NOT, FREE OF CHARGE. WE WILL GLADLY ACCEPT A $6 PER YEAR CONTRIBUTION FROM NON-MEMBERS WHO MAY STILL WISH TO CONTRIBUTE SOMETHING. PNR President From your Superintendent: It has come to pass that our Regional President has decided to resign. And as luck would have it our current Vice President is unable to assume to the position of President due to health issues. Thus, a new president and vice president are needed. If you have a desire to help with the operation of the PNR and at the same time earn an Official certificate toward becoming a Master Model Railroader please consider volunteering for one of these positions. ET LAST RUN Phil Ulmen With profound sadness, the Rocky Mountain Hi Railers extend our deep condolences to the 3rd Division on the loss our dear friend, Phil. The news of his passing hits us all very hard, even though we knew it was coming, as it will for all of us. Peace be with all of us, and Rest in Peace, Phil. Farewell, Friend. John Eichmann DeVaughn "Red" Wilder It is with great sadness that I inform you of the passing of our friend Red. Red Passed away on January 13, 2015 at his home. He was interred at the Idaho Veterans Cemetery with full Military Honors. DeVaughn "Red" Wilder, 4/29/26 1/13/15. Rest in peace my friend. Mac KG7MPW
