2 DISTRICT DEPUTY LETTER Dear, Brethren: Welcome back to the 13th District Lodge of Instruction! By now most of your Lodges have installed a new line of Officers and are preparing to hit the ground running. Meantime, we welcome an entirely new Lodge into our District: Scimitar Lodge, A.F. & A.M. (under dispensation), out of the Aleppo Temple in Wilmington. Most of the Officers from Scimitar Lodge have been members of Lodges in the 13th District for some time (many very senior members), so I have no doubt that we shall all work well together. This evening s topic is How to Run a Business Meeting and will be presented by Wor. Mario Marchese, the District Officer Development Representative and a Past Master of Friendship Lodge. Following the presentation, a complimentary collation will be served by the Officers of the Woburn Lodges. Next month we will be meeting in Reading. The speaker is R.W. Tim McGavin, D.D.G.M. of the 8th Masonic District, Past Master of Mount Hermon Lodge, and the Senior Warden of Golden Rule Lodge. R.W. Bro. McGavin will be discussing the Masonic Memorial Service and Widows Program. Following the program, Good Samaritan Lodge and Friendship Lodge will serve a complimentary collation. Finally, October 17 is Square & Compasses Day. You should be working with Wor. John Kelley to prepare an exciting event to bring the public in. Once the day is planned it is up to YOU to invite your family, friends, co-workers, and neighbors to come by your Lodge building and learn what it is about Masonry that has attracted you to the Craft and kept you engaged. Invite someone to receive the gift of Freemasonry. Fraternally, (R.W. Kevin J. Willis) Right Worshipful Kevin J. 3 13TH LODGE OF INSTRUCTION MISSION STATEMENT The Lodge of Instruction has been established to reinforce and encourage the practice of our Masonic tenets. 4 MASONIC WISDOM MASONIC MATTERS Refreshment & Labor. Posted on themasonictrowel.com, by Wor. Ed Halpaus (Paraphrased to fit space.) What is meant when a Lodge is at either Refreshment or Labor? And who is in Charge of the Craft during those times? Who do Masons acknowledge as being the officer in charge, and how is this acknowledgement demonstrated? Something that is quite interesting has to do with the Lodge being at Refreshment. Some seem to think that when the Junior Warden is ordered to call the Lodge from Labor to refreshment that the Lodge is then closed temporarily and that after the Three Great Lights and the Three Lesser Lights are attended to by the Senior Deacon, that the Brethren can disburse as they please. We know that in most cases they then go into the dining room, or have a program where others are invited to be in the Lodge Room, but when the Lodge is at refreshment it is not closed. I ve learned that a Lodge after it is opened must be either at Labor or Refreshment. Calling from Labor to Refreshment differs from closing. Besides the ceremony being a quicker one, the Junior Warden assumes control of the craft. The Symbol or Badge of his authority is that he disposes, (erects,) his column on his Pedestal Mackey s says; that the mythical history of Masonry tells us that high twelve, (or noon,) was the hour at the temple of The Stewards symbol has forever bore the emblem of refreshment. Solomon when the craft were permitted to suspend their Labor, which was resumed an hour Later. In reference to this a Lodge is at all times, symbolically, to be called from Labor to Refreshment at high twelve, and be called back to Labor one hour after high twelve. George Washington as Master of a Lodge of Masons, presumed to be calling his Lodge from refreshment back to labor. what the answer is; Masons entering or leaving a Lodge salute the Master at the Altar if the Lodge is at Labor they salute the Junior Warden if the Lodge is at refreshment. This practice assures the Master that the Brother knows on what degree the Lodge is open. A Brother making the wrong sign can be instructed immediately. It informs the Master that the Brother is a Mason of the degree on which the Lodge is open; if he makes an inferior sigh, and cannot, on request, give the right one, the Master can then use other means to ascertain that no Entered Apprentice or Fellow Craft is present in a Master Mason Lodge. The Salute is a silent assurance to the Master and the Brethren: I remember my obligations. Brethren salute on retiring to get permission to leave. No one can enter or leave a Lodge room while the Lodge is at Labor without permission. If the Master does not wish the Brother who salutes to retire, he tells him so,instead of responding to the salute. At refreshment the Lodge is in charge of the Junior Warden and the same salutes are given him as are usually given to the Master, and for the same reasons. In some Grand Jurisdictions, on busy evenings, during a visitation or other Masonic function, the Master will instruct the Tiler to ask the Brethren to salute the West, instead of the East, in order to not have his own labors in the East interrupted. So there it is, a Lodge of Masons is either opened or it s closed. If it is open it is either at Labor or Refreshment, and salutes are required unless the Master has ordered them not to be used when guests are in the Lodge Room. When it is closed no salutes are necessary. When a Lodge is at Labor and a Brother needs to enter or leave the Lodge Room he will approach the Altar and salute the Master, or upon the Masters order salute the Senior Warden since the Master is in charge of the craft when Lodge is at Labor, and the Senior Warden assists him in this effort. There is something that is hardly ever done, when the Lodge is called from Labor to Refreshment. Question: Why do Brethren entering or leaving a Lodge salute the Master? Here is some of The gavel as commanded by any Lodge Master will set the change in motion to call the Craft from or to Labor or Refreshment.

Mount Horeb Lodge, Woburn Attending the DDGM Visits is a distinct honor and privilege reserved for the Masters and Wardens of a Lodge. As a voting member of Grand Lodge you are expected to attend the Quarterly Communications and District Deputy Visits as a representative of your Lodge. In addition to being part of your official obligation when you were installed as a Lodge Officer, the Visits provide you with an opportunity to meet Brethren from other Lodges who are progressing up the line with you (Brethren whom you may call upon some day when you need help with a Degree), hear announcements from throughout the District, and to promote your own events. In other words, these Visits are important for you, your Lodge, and your development as an Officer. Rules for Visits in the 13th District 1. All Masters/Wardens are expected to attend every regularly scheduled Visit. The only exceptions are those Lodges that have conflicting meeting nights (i.e., Good Sam/Mount Horeb and Star of Bethlehem/Friendship). The Masters of Lodges that fail to have 3 representatives at 7 out of 9 Visits will not receive a recommendation to receive a Past Master s Certificate. 2. If any Master or Warden is unable to attend a scheduled Visit, he may send any other member of his Lodge in his place and his Lodge will receive credit for the Visit. I ask is that you let me know who the substitute Brother is, so I can be sure he is given a purple apron. 3. Substitute Brothers should be instructed to wear a tuxedo, black tie, and clean white gloves (if they are Officers) or a dark suit (if they are sideline Brethren) and their name badges. 4. Unless a Lodge advises differently, you should assume that dinner is not free for anyone with the exception of the DDGM, District Marshal, and District Secretary. Please make your own timely dinner reservations. 5. Carpooling is strongly encouraged to ensure sufficient space for parking. 6. If you are attending a Visit, be prepared, signed in and lined up by 7:45 PM. All Visits will begin promptly at 8:00 PM. Attire is tuxedo, clean white gloves, name badge, traveling apron, and traveling jewel. Past Masters may wear their PM aprons, PM jewels etc. 7. At the conclusion of the Official Visit, I will retire. At that time, you are free to go home. If there is more work to do, you may remain in the Lodge with the Master s permission. In some cases, I may plan on returning to the Lodge. 8. The dates and times for all visits are on the calendar at You also will be sent reminders from time to time. Additionally, if your Lodge fails to provide three representatives at a Visit, a special reminder will be sent to the Master, prior to the next Visit. This is being done as a courtesy so the Master may make a special appeal to his Wardens and/or find proxies to ensure the attendance requirements are met going forward.
