1 NEWSLETTER APRIL 3, 2017 Most Worshipful Paul F. Gleason Grand Master of Masons in Massachusetts Right Worshipful Paul B. Craigie District Deputy Grand Master, 13th District Regular Meetings First Monday of the Month (except as noted) Location rotates between District Lodges Begins at 7:00pm sharp Collation to follow TONIGHT S PROGRAM (4/3) Location: Wakefield, 370 Salem Street Topic: Dispute Resolution / Project, Part 2 of 3 Collation: Wakefield Lodges NEXT MONTH S PROGRAM (5/1) Location: Reading, 110 Haven Street Topic: Strategic Thinking / Project, Part 3 of 3 Collation: Reading & Wilmington Lodges
2 DISTRICT DEPUTY LETTER Greetings Brethren! This month s activity is Conflict Resolution. I hope we can all add the skills learned to our personal toolboxes. I have some projects I would like to introduce to the District in the next few months, and hopefully we can work collectively to achieve completion on as many as possible in the next 2 years. All 8 Lodges in the District are distinctly original, but I feel that all share a deep sense of commitment. My hope is by working together, we can strengthen that commitment to the point that we are not one of the best Districts in the Grand Lodge, but THE best District in all of Massachusetts. If we can do this, then our Lodges and future Brethren will benefit greatly. The month of April will be our busiest thus far, with 3 Fraternal Visits, 4 Table Lodges, our Exemplification, and the roll out of the Membership Plan. All Lodges should have a Membership Chairman at this point. These Masons will serve as a conduit for information back and forth between the individual Lodges and Grand Lodge. I also hope you can attend the activities happening across the District this month. By visiting and supporting Brethren in other Lodges, we can share fellowship, and exchange ideas. This can only serve to improve every Lodge, and strengthen the bonds of Brotherhood. It was my privilege to be assigned to District 13 as your District Deputy Grand Master. I welcome all your ideas, your enthusiasm, and yes, even your complaints and criticisms. I only ask that you seek solutions, and not dwell on the problems. Brethren, if we all do our jobs, and do them well, then we will be on our way to building a legacy to be enjoyed, and hopefully imitated, by those Masons who come after us. Fraternally and respectfully, RW Paul B. Craige, DDGM 13th Masonic District Right Worshipful Paul B. 3 13TH LODGE OF INSTRUCTION MISSION STATEMENT The Lodge of Instruction has been established to reinforce and encourage the practice of our Masonic tenets. It accomplishes this by providing education for candidates and information for Lodge Officers and members, in a friendly and social atmosphere. The main objective is to encourage personal growth, increase knowledge of Freemasonry and to uphold the traditions of our craft. 4 MASONIC WISDOM Blue Lodge Titles. Supplied by Wor. Frank J. Kautz, II (Paraphrased to fit space.) One of the confusing things within our fraternity is the various titles that we use. The new Mason hears men called Brother, Worshipful, Worshipful Master, Right Worshipful, Right Worshipful District Deputy Grand Master, Most Worshipful, Most Worshipful Grand Master, plus the titles of the other Masonic bodies. But do we really understand what they mean, these honorifics that we use so often? Let us take a look at the origins of our titles to answer that question. We start with the very first title that every Mason both prizes and cherishes: Brother. For countless millennia, groups of men have banded together to form societies. They described their members as brothers. This was often done as a way of encouraging these men to think of themselves as if they were part of a family. Our fraternity is one wherein we strive to do more than most fraternities. We have solemnly and repeatedly promised to befriend and relieve, with unhesitating cordiality, so far as shall be in our power every Brother who shall need your assistance... If we faithfully observe these duties, the world will observe how Freemasons love one another; in obedience to the will of God. Thus we utilize the title of Brother in our Fraternity to denote that we are closer than mere friends, that we are all equal with one another. Brother is the most basic title of all Freemasons. In Massachusetts, the term Brother should be used whenever just the last name is used. Whenever the first name is omitted the word Brother must be inserted. When introducing a brother to another brother for the first time, you can do so by saying Brother George Smith. If you know them, give any other titles that Brother Smith may have, but if you do not, Brother is appropriate. It is abbreviated as Bro. and the plural is Bros. When addressing a group of brothers, the proper term is Brethren. Like all titles, they are not to be used on the public side of correspondence, regardless of the brother s rank. The term Worshipful, which can be used either by itself or as Worshipful Master is an old English term; one that dates back to Old English. It most likely started out as a compound word meaning worthiness. It was formed from the adjective worth and the noun suffix ship state or condition, and was first used for distinction, credit, or dignity. It soon passed into respect and reverence. It did not gain a religious context until the fourteenth century. The original sense of this word is preserved today in our title and in the titles of most of the mayors in England. jurisdictions and care should be exercised in visiting those jurisdictions to be sure that proper protocol is followed. The word Master comes to us from Latin through Old English. It is derived from magister, which means teacher. So, the Worshipful Master of a lodge is truly the respected teacher. He is the one with the authority in the lodge and is the one who is responsible for seeing to the education of his brothers. The word Most as in Most Worshipful comes to us through the Roman Church. It was in use as early as 1060 A.D. It appears in the response of Emperor Constantine IX to Pope Leo IX after the schism of The word used was reverendissimus, which is the superlative reverendus, meaning Most Reverend. It was used to address bishops and abbots. The Roman Catholic Church, as part of the Simplification of Ecclesiastical Titles in 1969 did away with most of these titles. However, we Freemasons, have maintained these titles for the heads of our jurisdictions. Pursuant to the Grand Constitutions, Section 208, the Grand Master and Past Grand Masters shall be referred to as Most Worshipful. The title Right is both the easiest and most complicated of all of the titles. The word right has more than a dozen definitions in the dictionary, none of which would really give us the reason we use it as a title. Right ultimately goes back to the Indo-European base regular meaning: move in a straight line. Hence we have direct and hence rule, which also produced the English rich and the Latin rex or king (source of the English words regal, royal, etc.). This would likely be the origin of the use of Right as part of a title, so Right Worshipful would be considered set slightly above to direct or rule. As our Grand Lodge is a direct descendent of the Grand Lodge of England, it makes sense that our titles would follow the usages of England. Much in our nation has changed over the years, in particular the definitions of words in English, so it is not surprising that we have lost some of the original meanings of the very titles that we use. It is also not surprising that we have so much trouble explaining those titles to new Masons and to the public. It is hoped that this paper will help you in explaining these titles in the future. Here in Massachusetts, when a man is elevated to the Eastern Chair, he may ever after be called by the title Worshipful. It is a term of respect and is only to be used as such. This is not true in all BROTHER The regalia of a Brother is simply an apron. White WORSHIPFUL The regalia of a Wor. Master, top hat optional. Blue RIGHT WORSHIPFUL The regalia of a Right Wor., DDGM top hat required. Purple MOST WORSHIPFUL The regalia of the Most Wor., tricorn hat. Ornate-Purple
