2 DISTRICT DEPUTY LETTER Greetings Brethren! In this Masonic Year of LOI classes, RW Kelley and I have asked you to attend the meetings each month, bring your candidates for their instruction, and participate in the interactive Officer Education sessions over the past several months. The participation of the attendees has been excellent, and I feel the goal of fostering the exchange of ideas was successfully achieved. I thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedules to spend 90 minutes in Masonic collaboration, which I hope has, or will, help to make all our Lodges stronger. Next year s curriculum has not been announced, but there has been some talk of returning to more Masonic topics. Whatever the case, my goal is to build on this year s efforts, and increase the attendance month by month. The best way to get more butts in the seats is to begin casual conversations in your Lodge about the past month s meetings. This could pique interest in what s going on. Second, feedback should be solicited on what went well, and what could stand improvement. I intend to begin that next month, and continue that practice monthly. Lastly, planning and presenting each session should, I feel, involve interested members from the Brethren of our District. I will speak about this at the May LOI. LOI is handled differently throughout our Jurisdiction, and I have polled several DDGM s on their methods of presentation. However, I would like us to develop our own style, one that keeps members interested and informed, and at the same time makes efficient use of our valuable free time. Above all else, LOI gives all 8 Lodges a once a month opportunity to meet and exchange ideas. Please encourage all your members to take full advantage of this monthly event. I thank each Lodge for the privilege to serve as your DDGM, and you can always feel comfortable to approach me for assistance, or, even better, to let me know about an event you held that went especially well. That way we can all succeed together. Fraternally and respectfully, RW Paul B. Craige, DDGM Right Worshipful Paul B. Craigie UPCOMING DISTRICT EVENTS 5/1 Lodge of Instruction, Reading 5/2 FV Mt. 3 13TH LODGE OF INSTRUCTION MISSION STATEMENT The Lodge of Instruction has been established to reinforce and encourage the practice of our Masonic tenets. It accomplishes this by providing education for candidates and information for Lodge Officers and members, in a friendly and social atmosphere. The main objective is to encourage personal growth, increase knowledge of Freemasonry and to uphold the traditions of our craft. 4 MASONIC WISDOM Masonic Animal Symbolism. Sources; The Menagerie of Masonry by Unknown posted on MasonicWorld.com, Mackey s Encyclopedia of Freemasonry, The Lion s Paw posted from the Grand Lodge of Texas, and More Noble than the Roman Eagle by Greg Stewart posted on FreemasonInformation.com (Paraphrased to fit space.) LAMB Sybolism refers to innocence LION Sybolism refers to strength BEES Sybolism refers to industry EAGLE Sybolism refers to power & immortality In Masonry the Lamb is the symbol of innocence. Innocence is defined as the state of being free of evil, or from that which corrupts or taints; purity. In Christian iconography, the symbolism of the lamb comes from the expression of Saint John the Baptist, who exclaimed, on seeing Jesus, Behold the Lamb of God. Throughout the Old Testament are references to lambs, often in connection with sacrifices, frequently used in a sense of innocence, purity, gentleness and weakness. The symbolism is aided by the color, white which we associate with purity. The lion is one of Freemasonry s most powerful and potent symbols; The Lion of the Tribe of Judah is so prominent within the Masonic world as is the Lion s Paw. Yet, both are often less fully comprehended than their importance warrants. The lion has in all ages been noted as symbol of strength and sovereignty dating back to the Middle Ages and again in the Christian era. Lion of the Tribe of Judah was also one of Solomon s titles. But Christian interpretation of the phrase springs from Revelations (V. 5), Behold, the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book and to loose the seven seals thereof. Bee s or references to the beehive is said to be an emblem of industry the word is used in the sense of centuries ago, which refers to the employment of a very large number of men, tens of thousands in many instances, on one undertaking at one place and at the same time. It was the method by which in the ages before heavy machinery vast building enterprises were accomplished, like the building of the Egyptian pyramids or the Great Wall of China. The Beehive is the perfect example of the power of industry, because what no one bee could accomplish is easy where hundreds of them work together at one task at one time. The eagle, is a symbol, of great antiquity. In Egypt, Greece, and Persia, this bird was sacred to the sun. Among the Pagans it was an emblem of Jupiter, and with the Druids it was a symbol of their supreme god. In ancient times the eagle was seen as the living creature that came closest to the heavens. In Masonic parlance the eagle is better known as the Roman Eagle (also known as Aquila), and considered o be a symbol of strength, courage, and immortality. The eagle became a militaristic emblem of the Roman Legions but prior to the Romans the Persians, under Cyrus the Youngermade use of the eagle as an emblem of war. BEASTS OF THE FIELD & THE FOWLS OF THE AIR Sybolism refers to the opposite of innocence The references to the beasts of the field and the fowls of the air are connected to and influenced by Old Testament. In I Samuel (XVII 41) we read: And the Philistine said unto David, Come to me and I will give thy flesh to the fowls of the air and to the beasts of the field. In the Old Testament the term beasts denotes any brute; a wild animal opposed to a domesticated one, and the apocalyptic symbol of brute force as the opposite of Divine power. Masonry does not consider beasts of the field to be any working animals used by mankind. In Masonic references it refers to those creatures that feed on deceased entities as scavengers. These wild beasts are bears, wild bulls, hyenas. jackals, leopards and wolves; all Old Testament animals. Similar, the fowls of the air refer to vultures, owls, and hawks.
