I thought I would visit this person whom I had yet to meet. So, just as it is my normal habit, I called the hospital to find their room number. I do this for multiple reasons. First, when I arrive at the hospital, I do not have to track down information and I can merely go directly to the room. Second, it confirms the person is in the hospital so I do not drive some distance to visit only to discover that the person is no longer a patient. Thus, I call to confirm room numbers before every hospital visit, even if I have been to that person s room multiple times. This has proven to be the most reliable means for me to know where I should spend my time visiting persons who are in the hospital. Through the years, I have found that family members often forget to call the church to inform us that their loved one is in the hospital. And, a phone call to the hospital can easily confirm any rumor of hospitalization that reaches the office. Also, family members often forget to inform the church that their loved one has moved to a new facility or has returned home. Again, a phone call easily confirms the location in the hospital of the patient, and lets me know whether the person has moved and no visit to the hospital is needed. My experience through more than twenty-six years is that hospitals are glad to assist in giving this information. When the HIPAA regulations first went into effect, hospitals were scared of distributing information that violates the law. Some, understandably, overreacted for a short time. And, unfortunately, the days are gone when I can walk into a hospital and look through a printed list of all the Methodist members who happen to be in the hospital on any given day. Continued on page 2
2 THE MESSENGER Page 2 GOD S COMPASSION, CON T. But, simple phone calls have at least facilitated visits to those whom I hear are in the hospital. Most hospitals will even tell me when a patient has been discharged and sometimes if they have been transferred to another facility, they will tell me what facility they are transferred to. This has been my universal experience for nearly three decades in St. Joseph, Missouri, Kansas City, Wichita, Lawrence, Topeka, and other hospitals until I moved to southwest Kansas. More than one regional hospital has refused to give me room numbers over the telephone. One hospital has refused to give me a room number after I arrived at the hospital, even when I proved I was the person s pastor. Their (abrupt and unfriendly) instruction was to get the room number from the family. This last hospital claimed they were merely following HIPAA laws. I can only assume they have misunderstood these laws. But, the result is that I have no reliable means of information for visiting your loved ones in the hospitals in the area except for you. If it is important to you that I or someone from the church visits your loved one, then I appeal to you to take the time to call the church with the information, including room number. You will need to call every time your loved one is moved to a new room. And, also call promptly when they are transferred to a new facility or discharged. Thank you for joining with me in compassionate ministry for God s kingdom. -Pastor Richard Church Family List for January & February Jan 19. Jan. 26.
