Jesus "rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, 'Peace! Be still!' Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm." (Mark 4:35-41). SOUP SUPPER & MOVIE Oct. 13th, 6 P.M. Grace Card showing in Sanctuary Children's movie in Fellowship Hall, childcare provided. (Provided by Fun & Fellowship) I BELIEVE Today we find ourselves in the midst of great need. We are in a long dry spell, harvesting corn which didn't make and planting wheat with little moisture. We are a month and a half from Election Day with many difficult issues facing our nation--high unemployment, overwhelming national debt, ongoing debates about health care and immigration, and now several of our embassies are threatened by angry mobs of protestors. What can we do? Is our faith of any help in the face of the magnitude of our needs? Those taking the Christianity Explored class heard last week that the stopping of the wind would not naturally lead to the immediate halt of the waves. Water doesn't work like that. There was plenty to amaze the disciples in the boat. It was all supernatural. At Jesus' command, a full tilt storm stopped on a dime. What was threatening salty fishermen, causing them to fear for their lives, was gone in an instant moment. because Jesus said so. Not only did the wind quit, Continued on pg 2

2 Page 2 I Believe (continued) but the energy within the water, which would keep the waves going long after the wind, vanished precisely at that moment. And how did the fishermen disciples respond? Their awe of Jesus was greater than their fear of the storm. They asked one another, "Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?" (Mark 4:41). These disciples were one step closer to believing. When Jesus, Peter, James, and John came down from the Mount of Transfiguration, the other disciples were struggling to cast a demon from a boy (Mark 9:14-29). The father told Jesus the boy's history with the affliction and asked Jesus, "If you are able to do anything, have pity on us and help us." Jesus replied, "If you are able!--all things can be done for the one who believes." The father cried out, "I believe; help my unbelief!" Jesus rebuked the spirit and it came out of the boy. When the disciples asked Jesus why they were unsuccessful in casting out the demon, Jesus answered, "This kind can come out only through prayer." As Jesus prepared his disciples for his departure, he told them, Very truly, I tell you, if you ask anything of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. (John 16:23). Jesus wanted his disciples to know, that just as he had helped them while he was with them, so he through prayer would help them from heaven. Belief is a conclusion drawn based on the facts as we have perceived them. Is Jesus the only Son of God? Does God truly have supernatural power, authority over all creation, including even the affairs of human history? Does God hear and act on the prayers of those who believe and align themselves with His will? There is prayer which is uttered in desperation and without much faith. Such prayers are more like wishes than true prayers. And then there are prayers spoken in confident faith. The confidence is not in the answer which will be given, but in the authority of God to answer. Such is the faith Jesus meant when he said, Truly I tell you, if you say to this mountain, Be taken up and thrown into the sea, and if you do not doubt in your heart, but believe that what you say will come to pass, it will be done for you. (Mark 11:23). Such belief is not only a conclusion that God is God and that He is disposed to answer the prayers of those who believe in him, but it is the conclusion that calls us into action. Make no mistake, prayer is not doing little or nothing, prayer is doing the hardest and most important work. So what can we do in the face of our many great needs? We can believe God is able and willing to address these needs. We can ask Him for help, not telling Him what the answer must be, but asking Him to act and do more than we imagine. And we can keep asking Him until the work is done. Do you believe? Like the boy s father, I answer, I believe, Lord, help my unbelief.
