3 March 2018 Saint Hilary s 2017 Annual Report Dear Friends of Saint Hilary Church and School, It s time once again to share with you the news about how St. Hilary s has been doing the past three years, by publishing this multi-page report as we do each winter. First, let me say what a blessing and privilege it is to be part of your community since 2010, when the Archdiocese of San Francisco transferred me from Daly City to Tiburon. I enjoyed my twelve years at Our Lady of Mercy very much, and now I am most grateful to God for the chance to serve Jesus and his people at St. Hilary s as well. We priests get moved from parish to parish, and are also called to serve in other ministries at times: for example, Father Ginter this past year was asked to be part of the four-man team promoting vocations in the three counties of our Archdiocese. Other priests are asked to go to Rome for further studies, to serve as hospital chaplains, or to teach and work in our Catholic high schools. We also have priests who serve in the military as chaplains, and others who minister to the police officers and firefighters of our area. Like you, we have a plethora of ways to be of service. As a convert to the Catholic Faith, I am inspired by the good things we see taking place here day in and day out: our children, teens, and adults come to St. Hilary s not only for worship and education, but also for fellowship (e.g., faith sharing groups, book clubs, Lenten soup suppers, monthly pasta nights, senior luncheons) and of course to serve others. This service to people in need is very evident in the ministries the good people of Saint Hilary Church and School take part in throughout the year, but also in the pages of this financial report: just take a look at page six and notice how generous you have been, again this year, to the many causes that good Christian people have been promoting for ages. Care for the retired Nuns, Sisters and Brothers who have provided a solid Catholic education to generations of Americans for decades, and who now need our help to make do in their golden years. Victims of natural disasters, and people in mission lands, who are helped by you even though you will never meet them in person. Thank you for choosing St. Hilary s as your spiritual home. We build on the foundation of those early parishioners, and the Sisters of the Holy Faith, who established this sacred community, and we choose to keep it strong through our Sunday worship, our outreach, our spreading of the Catholic Faith, and, for those who can afford to do so, our financial support. God bless you and your loved ones, Father William E. Brown Pastor St. Hilary Church & School 3

Notes: 1. The Church operations do not include Special Collections and other donations which are shown on page 6, other than the Archdiocesan Annual Appeal (AAA) overage, which is retained by the Parish. 2. Financial results have been adjusted to remove the effects of certain one-time events that do not have a bearing on regular operations, including the profit on the sale of the upper property of $675,228. St. Hilary s share of the proceeds became available in In capital expenditures of $179,509 were spent from reserves for the replacement of rotting rectory roof beams, leaking rectory rain gutters, and other repairs and improvements. These are reported separately from financial statements for operations. 4
5 Church Financial Report July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017 Narrative Income Church overall income, not including the proceeds of the sale of property, decreased about 3.6% in the year compared to the prior fiscal year. Collections were 73.7% of the Church income for the year. They were 2% down from the previous year. Increases from last year in Sacramental Offerings, Thrift Shop income and the Archdiocesan Annual Appeal overage bolstered Church income. The profit on the sale of the upper property of $675,228 will supplement the Church reserves in anticipation of future capital needs. Expenses Personnel Salaries and Wages, Payroll Taxes and Employee Benefits represented 70% of Church expenses. These expenses were 6% lower than the previous fiscal year. Overall, Church expenses decreased about 12% over last year due, in large part, to decreases in personnel expenses, mentioned above, as well as stewardship and deferred maintenance expenses. Summary Overall net ordinary income was $17,081. On June 30, 2017, the Church had $1,565,224 in bank accounts and in an account managed by the Archdiocese of San Francisco. The substantial year over year increase in the Church s savings balance is attributed to the proceeds from the sale of the upper property. 5

8 Dear Saint Hilary Community, Saint Hilary School continues to enjoy recording-breaking success with full enrollment and a surplus in applications for the coming academic year. This sort of demand brings with it a whole new set of challenges such as managing wait lists for nearly every grade and hiring additional staff who believe in our vision of Catholic education to accommodate these new students. Additionally, Saint Hilary students and staff have distinguished themselves in the community as well. For example, 8th grade students who serve as Co-Directors for the Pencils for Africa service group, James McIntyre and Kyle Sutherland, successfully submitted a grant proposal to the Gates Foundation to fund the Two Gates to Africa research program. Additionally, our 5-8 grade science teacher, Scott Buchanan, received the 2017 Tiburon Teacher of the Year award from the Tiburon Rotary Association. Much of our current success is rooted in our refined mission to provide an academically innovative and faith-filled K-8 community that fuses leading edge learning techniques with a whole child philosophy. Our students typically compete at the highest level in the secondary school of their choice while reflecting internalized Catholic values such as compassion, empathy, honesty, and faith. The Saint Hilary School experience can be distilled into what we call our Four Cs: Collaboration, Community, Curiosity and Compassion. We support this ambition by first relentlessly pursuing innovation in our curriculum content and teaching methods by aligning or adopting the following: 1. Apple Distinguished School honor maintained Apple recognizes schools throughout the world for innovation, leadership and educational excellence. Our Apple Distinguished Award has been renewed through In addition, we have worked to integrate a digital citizenship program. Apple recognizes outstanding schools and programs worldwide for innovation, leadership, and educational excellence. We ve learned from our fellow Apple Distinguished Schools that there are Five Best Practices to sustain a successful one-to-one ipad program, and we are using this knowledge to help our students in their learning adventure. 2. Next Generation Science Standards Our science curriculum has been recently transformed to embrace UC Berkeley s Lawrence Hall of Science s Amplify Program for our middle school students. This innovative curriculum teaches Next Generation Science Standards by asking students to not merely learn science, but to figure out science. It is designed to make the student assume a more active role in their education by giving them the content and tools, and asking them to solve scientific problems. 3. Stanford University s Challenge Success Partnership Through our continued partnership with the Challenge Success at Stanford University, we have added the following improvements: a. Added enrichment classes in the junior high which allows students to choose their own courses and allow for smaller class sizes. b. Refined the daily school schedule to reduce student stress. c. Increased physical education and recess time to promote wellness and engagement. d. Provided additional mathematics support in grades Inquiry-based and Project-based Learning As the old adage states: Tell me and I forget; show me and I remember; involve me and I understand. Current research reveals that the most effective learning methods include inquiry-based and project-based learning. Saint Hilary School has embraced both teaching techniques to cultivate a more engaged and competent student. 5. Differentiated Learning Saint Hilary School continues to optimize learning to a variety of learners by adjusting the content, process, projects, and environment for those qualified students. Saint Hilary continues to build upon the school s strong 50-year legacy of promoting excellence and faith. As Saint Hilary s principal, I look forward to collaborating with faculty, staff, parents and students to deliver a rigorous 21st Century Catholic Education. We have an incredible community with so much to celebrate, and I am looking forward to engaging with everyone to achieve the goals we are collectively setting. My office is always open to you, so please feel free to contact me at mbordeleau@sainthilaryschool.org or by phone at Until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand, Marie Bordeleau Principal Saint Hilary School 8
