2 New Beginnings: A Catholic Divorce Ministry Ed Hopfner hopfnere@sfarch.org The Archdiocese strives to make known Christ's healing love, so that all who suffer from separation or divorce might experience new life, reconciliation, and restoration, and by meeting people in a similar position may find help to rebuild their own lives. We also recognize that separated and divorced people are not mere recipients of the Church's compassion: they are also ministers of that compassion. Through their vulnerability, suffering, courage, faithfulness, and patient endurance they bear witness to Christ and his redeeming grace in the world. 3 Sunday, October 28, 2018 Dear friends in Christ, To my surprise, I glanced at the calendar for this Sunday and saw the words Priesthood Sunday which inspired me to look up the phrase: it comes from the Serra Club, a wonderful organization of faithful Catholics who foster vocations to the priesthood throughout our county. You may learn more by visiting their page at: As it happens, today s second reading also focusses on the priesthood, which in the last several weeks has taken quite a beating due to the crimes of past decades, and due to the cover-up which has horrified the faithful almost as much as the abuse in 2002 the priests were in the spotlight, and this year the bishops, cardinals, and Pope Francis are in the spotlight, especially given the revelations that have come to light. It s a hard time for good Catholic people, but I personally believe it will be a cleansing time, with those high above my pay grade working toward changes that will keep children safer, and hold even those in the highest offices accountable for how well or how poorly they have safeguarded the little ones so close to Jesus heart. Thanks be to God, the victims of abuse are now being heard, loud and clear, and their courageous voices have forced even huge international families like the Catholic Church to clean house and make serious changes: we cannot pretend it s just business as usual, nor should we. I, for one, thank God for those who have helped me along the path of becoming and remaining a Catholic: my godmother in Iowa, parishioners who are an inspiration, old priests who are men of compassion and integrity, and young priests who are filled with holy zeal to do good and stay on the path of holiness. I live with one. Even though some people have left the Church, or have decided to withhold financial support from their own parish, we keep trying to follow Jesus with fidelity and humility. We work to make our children safer, to make our people more vigilant, and to learn from the sins and mistakes of the past. We are human beings, and thus sinners, but also children of God called by his son Jesus to be beacons of light in the darkness. Brothers and sisters: Every high priest is taken from among men and made their representative before God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal patiently with the ignorant and erring, for he himself is beset by weakness and so, for this reason, must make sin offerings for himself as well as for the people. No one takes this honor upon himself but only when called by God, just as Aaron was. In the same way, it was not Christ who glorified himself in becoming high priest, but rather the one who said to him: You are my son: this day I have begotten you; just as he says in another place: You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. (Hebrews 5:1-6) At baptism we are anointed on the crown of our head with the Oil of Chrism, hearing these words: As Christ himself was anointed priest, prophet and king, so may you live always as a member of his body, sharing life everlasting. Through this sacred calling, I hope we can continue to live and work together for the building up of God s kingdom, even in the midst of people who might disappoint, situations here and abroad that may frighten us, and memories of hurts that can still weigh us down. We belong to Jesus, and no one, no scandal, no power on this planet can take that away from us. May the good Lord bless you and yours, Father Brown

Current year: Collections were $1,065 less than last year Total Income was $11,507 less than last year Total Expense was $12,444 less than last year Our business manager Adrian Gordon met with Father Ginter and Father Brown early last week to discuss some important cutbacks we may have to undertake, given the smaller number of people attending Mass, and thus the decreased amount of income we can rely on to run the church. As of this writing (Oct. 23), we are also looking to the Finance Council meeting on Oct. 24 to see how we can reduce costs and, God willing, increase income. As promised last week, more history about the Blessed Sacrament The Real Presence Toward the end of the eleventh century, we enter into a new era of the history of Eucharistic adoration. Until then, the Real Presence was taken for granted in Catholic belief, practice and publication and its reservation was the common practice in all churches, including those in religious communities. But, in 1047, the teachings of Berengerius, Archdeacon of Angers in France, began to deny that Christ was really and physically present under the species of bread and wine. Others took up these concepts and spread the idea that the Eucharistic Christ was NOT the Christ of the Gospels, and, by implication, was not actually there. Eventually Pope Gregory VII was forced to intervene and ordered Berengerius to sign a statement of retraction. The actual credo that he signed made theological history because it was the Church s first definitive statement of what had always been believed and never seriously challenged since the earliest days.
