MARQUETTE DISTRICT UNITED METHODIST WOMEN Fall -Winter 2017 President I was happy to represent the Marquette District at Annual Conference 6/1-4 in Traverse City. The theme was Gather Up. Bishop Bard s opening remarks focused on gathering all of us (as in a basket) of peace, hope, love, and joy. The opening Memorial Service was most meaningful and my own Pastor Kristi was one of the presenters. I m still interested in visiting local units on our district, and have so far visited four. Mark your calendar on 10/3 for our Annual District Celebration in Newberry. I m hearing we are in store for some real Southern BBQ. Being from TN, I m already getting hungry. Whenever I go down home, that s always my first meal. Mission U of the North is at Gaylord UMC 10/ (Forms in this newsletter) Hopefully, contributions are being made Legacy Fund, which will ensure a regular source of support for the operational expenses of the UMW. This will free the future UMW to raise and budget their mission giving dollars in a way that will connect more directly with women, children, and youth. (See the Treasurer s article for more information) Sadly, we lost a dear friend, loyal worker, and very special person, when Mary Densmore died unexpectedly. My thanks to all of you for the wonderful cards and prayers following my car accident in June. Angels were definitely watching over me!!!!!!! Bobbie Clift 225 W. Mich. St., Marquette, MI Vice President It s that time again! Time to get everyone stirred up about the Marquette District Annual Celebration. This year our celebration will be in Newberry. Our guest speaker will be Randy Hildebrant, the Church and Community worker for God s Country Cooperative Parish. He is a

wonderful speaker, and if that isn t enough to get everyone excited, he s going to prepare our lunch! He is going to barbecue for us. I ve had his barbecue and no one does it better. Come and celebrate with us, learn about the important work the GCCP does in the UP, eat some of the best barbecue you ve ever had, and enjoy the day with other United Methodist women. In this newsletter, you will find the GCCP Wish List, as well as Registration for this event. Please be sure the registration form is to me by September 15 th, which will give Randy enough time to plan for the meal. Items from the GCCP Wish List will be collected for our ingathering. I know the people of GCCP will be very thankful. Hope to see you all in Newberry on October 3 rd! Kathy Mallory 305 S. Steel St., Ontonagon, Mi kmallory21409@yahoo.com Secretary Greetings from Ontonogon! I hope your summer has been excellent. We still have many weeks of nice weather left, I hope! If you attended Annual Conference in Traverse City, you saw how the formation of a new conference, Michigan Annual Conference, is progressing. Soon we will the United Methodist Women of the Michigan Conference. I m looking forward to United Methodist Women Conferences with all of Michigan. Looking forward to seeing all of you in Newberry for our District Celebration on Tuesday, October 3! Please fill out the Local Unit Officers form enclosed in this newsletter and send it me as soon as you have elected your 2018 officers, but for sure by October 31, If you have any questions any time during the year, please feel free to call. Please continue to pray for our UMW units in the Marquette District; that we continue to make missions our priority. This month I have begun my morning prayers and devotions with Great Is Thy Faithfulness. I love Jesus so much and I look for seeing His mercies every day in my life. Great is Thy Faithfulness Great is Thy Faithfulness Morning by morning new mercies I see All I have needed Thy hand hath provided Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me Patti Steinberg 1101 Pine St. Ontonagon, Mi Pattisteinberg@gmail.com District. UMW Annual Celebration October 3, 2017 Newberry United Methodist Registration deadline Sept 15 th Hope to see all of you there!

Treasurer Summer greetings from a wet Menominee. It is mid July and I haven't had to water my garden yet at all! I wish we could share some of this rain with those parts of the country which so desperately need it. Now is the time to be thinking about getting your unit's contributions in to qualify as a 5-star unit. All monies need to be sent in to me by the end of September to be included in the program booklet for the Annual Meeting. If you have any questions, either about the requirements to be a 5-star unit or about the status of your unit, please contact me. Remember, also, that if any member of your unit qualifies as a 5-star woman, your unit automatically is a 5- star unit as well. If you need a form for submitting the 5-star payments, you can print one off here: VE%20STAR%20PERSON%20OR%20 UNIT%20Form.pdf Or you can contact me and I can mail you one. I also want to remind everyone of our commitment to support the Grand Rapids Community House. We are encouraging each unit to send in $4 per member, which will go towards maintenance of the Community House facilities. You can also send donations in support of their ministries, but be sure to let me know which of the types of contributions you are sending in so it can be properly credited. A couple of unit treasurers are still writing checks to me personally. Please remember to make your check payable to Marquette District UMW. Thank you to every member of each unit in our district for all you do to bring the love of Christ to those you serve in your community and around the world through your direct ministry and your financial support. It all adds up to a significant impact in the lives of many women and children! The Detroit Conference UMW has requested that if possible each UMW unit in the conference make a contribution of $150 to the Legacy Fund. This money should be sent directly to the national office (NOT TO ME!) at the following address: Office of the Treasurer United Methodist Women 475 Riverside Drive Suite1503 New York, NY State that it is for the Legacy Fund, and be sure to include the name and address of your unit. Barb Akins th Ave., Menominee, MI vlnpno@gmail.com Spiritual Growth Is your calendar synced with God s? In The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey says the key is not to prioritize what s on your schedule but to schedule your priorities.

Was Jesus in a hurry? Did He pack his daily or weekly schedule so tightly He barely had time to breathe? I believe not many of us think of Jesus as a hurried person or stressed over getting more things done. Instead, He set his face to go to Jerusalem. He had a priority and His schedule was synced with God. When Jesus established the church before His ascension, the apostles asked if this was the time Jesus would restore the Kingdom of Israel. He replied that it wasn t the time for them to know the times or periods that God had set. Obviously, God s timetable is not ours and that is a difficult part of walking by faith. We may feel like we are to move on or we want to stay where we are longer than God s plan may be. If things are going well, we want to stay in that place forever, but when we ve been stuck in one place without the growth we want, we are ready to move on. We have the responsibility of following God wherever He leads, whenever He moves. Remember from Numbers how God made the cloud stay above the Tabernacle for days, months or a year and the people of Israel stayed until He lifted the cloud as permission to move on. God didn t have a scheduled day for that but moved at His timetable and when He felt it was a priority. Sometimes we may have to stay in order to grow. God s timetable for moving on may be different than our own, so stay until God has spoken. Stay and grow may not seem synonymous, but for Christians our growth depends on staying in God s word and leaving room in our calendars for His priorities. I hope you will make it a priority to grow by attending the Spiritual Growth Retreat in Manistique on April 28 th and 29 th, 2018 when we ll learn about dressing for success from Dawn Ferguson. Jane Yaeger, Spiritual Growth Coordinator th Ave, Menominee, Mi plainjane210@sbcglobal.net News from Nominating Welcome to Joyce Erickson as Membership/Nurture/Outreach Chair. Joyce has served the Nominating Committee since 2015 and has volunteered to take over the position formerly held by Pat Carmody & Mary Densmore. Joyce is from Iron Mountain and can be reached at or at erickson64@hotmail.com. We are happy to report that Pat Carmody is doing well and looking forward to returning home after months of medical treatment downstate. It is hard to believe that it is time to start plans for Marquette District s leadership team for The Nominating Committee will be meeting soon to confirm team positions for the coming year. Thank you to all our dedicated members who continue to work to meet the goals of UMW. Together we accomplish much to be proud of! Please prayerfully consider how your gifts &

talents can be used to meet the many challenges ahead. Bobbi Sundquist Sharon Rice Program Resources Happy summer! Hope you are enjoying lots of sunshine and not too much rain. Anytime is a good time to read, but summer seems more relaxed and you have more time to read. The UMW Reading Program is a great way to start. You need to read only 1 book from each category.
