2 Editorial Our AGM is in February so all the committee positions will become vacant. Nomination forms were sent last year so we need them back with your nominations at this meeting or as soon as possible. On a lighter note the club is about to achieve another milestone in that it will be 35 years in March since its formation. We could have only achieved this through the dedication of our members WELL DONE! Moving forward we need to continue with this great work from our members and achieve further milestones. It is your society, it doesn t belong to just a few we need to help at the shows, the meeting nights and offer suggestions for bus trips, guest speakers or improvements to the things that are already have in place. By doing this and other little things we can achieve much more. Michael - Editor Orchids Month By Month - February / March Cattleya - Water every three days to keep moist as required. Fertilize plants every week with high nitrogen organic and inorganic liquid fertilizers at half strength. Many plants should be coming into bloom and need to be moved into a cool, dry house with good ventilation and strong light. Cymbidiums - This is a quiet month for Cymbidiums but you must maintain your regular watering and fertilising. Check for overcrowding with all the new foliage and space them accordingly. Paphiopedilum - Maintain as much humidity as possible by watering the plants or damping down their house every second day. Paphs are not gross feeders so only need low nitrogen, high PK fertilizer. Winter flowering plants should be starting to bud now. Dendrobium - Water every second or third day with light misting on very hot days. Fertilise with a low nitrogen, high PK. Keep a watch out for the dreaded Dendrobium beetle. Heat, humidity and air movement will help towards optimum growth. Oncidium Alliance - Varicosum type oncidiums can be fertilized every weedend as they are growing strongly and their psuedobulbs are filling out. Odontoglossums need to be kept cool as possible. Do not let them dry out and fertilize regularly. Miltoniopsis plants need to be as cool as Odontoglossums but with more light. Vandaceous Alliance - Vanda are heavy feeders so watering and feeding regularly are essential for good growth. Water every second day and weekly with a low nitrogen, high PK fertiliser at half strength. An extra light misting won t hurt. Phalaenopsis Plants require shadier conditions than their vandaceous cousins, but the watering, feeding, and warmth and humidity are the same. Regular fertilising while plants are in active growth should help to achieve strong, healthy plants. Air circulating around pots and plants can help minimise fungus and rots.
