November brings Veteran s Day, Thanksgiving, Election Day, and Daylight Savings Time Ends. November is also a great time of thanks. God has done so many wonderful things for each and every one of us even if we cannot always see it. We can thank God for the privilege to vote for our president, for the men and women who fight to keep us safe, for the food and family that we have and many more wonderful blessings. We need to remember to give God thanks for everything and praise Him even in the storm. I will praise the name of God with song, And shall magnify Him with thanksgiving. -Psalm 69:30 Heroes in the Pews page 2 West Virginia page 3

2 John was drafted into the Army at the age of 18. After boot camp and specialty school, John and 35 other men were sent to the Pacific to provide radar support to the 5 th Air Wing in the Philippines. During the journey, John contracted dengue fever and had to stay in New Guinea until he was well. He was then sent to rendezvous with his company somewhere in Northern part of Luzon in the Philippines. I had no idea where they were sending me, he said, but I got there. Their primary mission was to set up radars so that the pilots would be able to locate where the Japanese were flying. His first stop in northern Luzon was pretty quiet. We would trade with the locals, they welcomed us up there, especially these guys called the bolo men, I even attended Sunday school with them. His unit was then relocated to the Southwestern part of Luzon. KIUMC NEWSLETTER I November Veteran s Day Highlight Veterans Day is celebrated in this country during the month of November. During this day, we recognize and celebrate all those who have answered the nation s call to serve in our armed forces. We thank them for the service and sacrifice that they and their families have made to ensure our freedom. There are a number of veterans in sitting our pews and we invite you to ask them to share about their time in service. Here, we have the privilege to have two World War II veterans share their story with us. 3 KIUMC NEWSLETTER I November One day, he remembers setting up radars and in the distance he could see folks jumping out of airplanes. It was the 503rd Parachute Regimental Combat Team jumping into Corregidor, and the historic battle began. We were setting up radars along the beach, and we saw these guys jumping, he recalls, the Marines were there too! We didn t see too many of them. He also recalls having a run in with Japanese soldiers in the jungle, in which he and his men had to engage with them. Soon his unit was again mobilized, and were sent to the island of Okinawa, off the coast of Japan. We were getting ready to go in, and scheduled for landing but the atomic bomb (in Hiroshima) happened, he said, After that, they were telling us to get ready to go home. John returned home to Baltimore. He currently lives in Chester with his wife Shirley and they attend the 8:00 a.m. service. PO3 Charles Fritze by Pastor Amor Born: April 17, 1919 U.S. Navy USS Inflict Occupation: Motor Machinist Dates of service: June 1944 March 1946 Charles signed up for the Navy before he was drafted into any other service. I knew if I were to serve, it had to be the Navy and my (draft) number was up. I had a connection at the draft board and she told me that if I wanted to join the Navy, do it now because I will be able to get Navy, so I did, he said. Charles was assigned to the USS Inflict, a minesweeper based out of Florida, his ship was then assigned under Admiral Spruance s 5 th Fleet. His missions included sweeping for mines in the Pacific, Sasebo, Okinawa China Sea, and the Sea of Japan. Charles was primarily in the engine room and was not idle. Hard work that was, he said, as he described pulling throttles, and the operations of an engine room. He remember his favorite time was having liberty in Shang-hi because it was the only time he had liberty. His ship was to clear the path for larger ships by removing mines that were planted in the sea. I remember one time some mines got stuck on the sheers, we couldn t get them off. We had two on one side and three on the other. Fortunately, we were able to remove sheers, he recalls. After the war was over, he returned home to Baltimore where he worked at a glass plant. He currently lives in Stevensville and an active member of the Grasonville VFW and a member of the Free Masons. He attends the 8:00 a.m. service.

4 KIUMC NEWSLETTER I November Adopt-a-Troop The 29 th Infantry Division, which includes Maryland Army National Guard Soldiers, have been mobilized and will deployed to Afghanistan early next year. We are inviting individuals, families, small groups, etc. to adopt a soldier as they are deployed. Start praying for them, send them cards, letters, or care packages while they are gone. As a partners-in-care congregation, Kent Island United Methodist Church, has made a commitment to render aid to guardsmen in our community. These 200+ Soldiers are members of our community, living and working among us. Let them know that there is someone back home praying and thinking about them. Free Clothing Giveaway by Jeanie Thompson The New Beginnings Ministry had a free clothing giveaway at the church on Oct 22nd. This event was open to the community. The people that attended left with lots of clothing for their children. We even had several children "shopping" for items that they liked. There were many volunteers that made this event possible including those who donated clothing. We were truly blessed to participate in this community outreach!!

5 KIUMC NEWSLETTER I November Family Fall Festival Another annual fall festival is complete. Thank the Lord for making the day so glorious; we couldn't have asked for better weather. Thanks go out to everyone involved with the festival for making it such a success for our church and the Lord. Until next year ~Dan Simmons

6 KIUMC NEWSLETTER I November Trunk or Treat What a blessed day we had for Trunk or Treat!!! So many families came and participated and were so excited to have this event for their little ones. We are so thankful to our church families and Cub Scout parents for coming out and decorating their trunks. I think we might just have to make this an annual thing!!! ROOTS Youth Ministries

7 KIUMC NEWSLETTER I November West Virginia Missions Trip Great job Mission Team! The Mission Team consisted of Dawn Cooper-Cathers, Scott Woolsey, Nancy Sidney, Lou Secary, Diana Secary, Sherry Masucci, Ann Lahocki, and Doug. They went to Richwood, West Virginia in October. Our Mission Team left October 6 th and got back October 9 th. They went to help the people that got effected during the flood. The Flood of June 2016 killed 24 people in Richwood, WV.

8 KIUMC NEWSLETTER November 2016 Pastor Appreciation October was Pastor Appreciation Month. Thank You Pastors for all that you do! If did not get a chance to see the Pastor videos or you would like to see them again they can be found on the KIUMC website and on KIUMC s youtube. Boy Scouts by Cheryl Cayer HUGE Congratulations to Braden Andrews, Noah Andres and Ricky Strucko. These three scouts endured the Ordeal at Akridge Scout Reservation and have been inducted into the brotherhood of the Order of the Arrow. These scouts have been challenged to give back to their troop and community in a spirit of cheerful service. Please be sure to congratulate them and also offer words of encouragement as they proceed in their future scouting endeavors. Congratulations Gentlemen!!! 9 KIUMC NEWSLETTER I November All Saints Sunday November 6 Daylight Savings Time Remember Day light savings time is November 6 th. So don t forget to turn back your clocks one hour. How we are returning to its original intent. Many churches celebrate All Saints Day with services of remembrance of saints. It is seldom that Protestants are gathered on November 1, so many churches observe All Saints Sunday each year on the Sunday following November 1. It is a day to remember the saints, "saints" by the New Testament meaning of "all Christian people of every time and place." It is a day to celebrate the communion of saints as we remember those who have died in the past year in our congregation. Over the years, our All Saints remembrance has grown to include many individuals that were not active in our church. This year, we are returning to the original intent, which is to remember those who have died in the past year who are a part of our church through membership or participation. 10 KIUMC NEWSLETTER I November Healing Ministry Testimony I suffered a serious heart attack over 26 years ago and was in and out of hospitals for over a year. With my Doctor s supervision I was managing to survive. Late in 2014 my Cardiologist was concerned about an artery shutting down. We scheduled heart surgery to repair the blockage. During the procedure the artery shut down and I suffered another heart attack. This left me so weak I could hardly walk. Later, my Cardiologist implemented heart related tests. Before the heart attack my heart function was 50%; now the test disclosed a critically low heart function of 24%. The Cardiologist informed me nothing could be done and that my time was very short and recommend that I get my affairs in order. He scheduled another appointment for more required tests prior to defibrillator surgery. Shortly after that Cardiologist appointment, a member of the healing ministry team placed his hands over my heart and prayed for my recovery as well as prayers from Nick and other church friends. I started to feel better then progressed enough to walk about 400 feet. In a short time I expanded my daily physical activity to walking 2 miles. I had two other doctors tell me that they could not understand how I was getting around so well. One doctor said, I don t see how you are capable of walking from the parking lot to my office. I returned a month later for more heart rate tests and to discuss the defibrillator surgery. I waited over an hour for the doctor to review the results. When he came in the exam room he said he could not believe the finding of the results. My heart was 24% and now the tests rendered it at 45%. He even had another doctor go over the test to confirm the significantly improved test results. I questioned the doctor on what changed the results. He replied, there was nothing he or any other doctor or pill could achieve or explain this miracle. He said this was a true miracle. John Olinger Healing Ministry Team

11 KIUMC NEWSLETTER November 2016 Nursery Needs Help The Nursery is still in need of help! We are in need of volunteers on Wednesday evenings from 7:00pm-8:15pmand 8:15pm-9:00pm. There are available times on Sundays as well. If you would like to share the love of Jesus, please see Laura Bagley in the nursery, or contact her via at Our Heaven Shelter Needs Help! It s that time of year again! We are preparing to open Our Haven Shelter the only emergency, winter shelter in QA County, and once again, we need your help. We are in need of volunteers to visit with guests, prepare provide, and serve dinners and provide food for breakfast and lunch for the dates of January 3-7, February and March You can call/text Sherry at or sherry.masucci@yahoo.com or to sign-up Feed-A-Family for Thanksgiving The Feed-A-Family program is supported by several churches in Queen Anne s County. We were blessed to provide baskets to 430 families last year and we might surpass that this year. The Turkey Tree is in the back of the church and will be there every Sunday until Nov. 13. Chose a tag, fill a basket and return it on the dates listed on the tag. This is a wonderful ministry opportunity for families of all sizes, individuals, Bible study groups everyone! 12 KIUMC NEWSLETTER November 2016 Thanksgiving Prayer BY: Vienna Cobb Anderson God of all blessings, source of all life, giver of all grace: We thank you for the gift of life: for the breath that sustains life, for the food of this earth that nurtures life, for the love of family and friends without which there would be no life. We thank you for the mystery of creation: for the beauty that the eye can see, for the joy that the ear may hear, for the unknown that we cannot behold filling the universe with wonder, for the expanse of space that draws us beyond the definitions of our selves. We thank you for setting us in communities: for families who nurture our becoming, for friends who love us by choice, for companions at work, who share our burdens and daily tasks, for strangers who welcome us into their midst, for people from other lands who call us to grow in understanding, for children who lighten our moments with delight, for the unborn, who offer us hope for the future. We thank you for this day: for life and one more day to love, for opportunity and one more day to work for justice and peace, for neighbors and one more person to love and by whom be loved, for your grace and one more experience of your presence, for your promise: to be with us, to be our God, and to give salvation. For these, and all blessings, we give you thanks, eternal, loving God, through Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.
