Message from the Master Self-Discipline Doing what you know needs to be done, without being told, is my definition of Self-Discipline. The Installation of Officers was a success thanks to the preparation and effort of the Installing Officer Worshipful Bro. Dave Doermann PM, the Master of Ceremonies Worshipful Bro. Gerald Harris, the Installing Chaplain Worshipful Bro. Joel Saxberg PM. and our Inspector Worshipful Steven Cooper PM. Through their exalted and exemplary character we have a new line of officers eager to take on the challenge of the spearheading renewing interest in Pasadena #272, increasing greater participation in Degree ceremonies and Masonic education for our brethren, more involvement in the community and Lodge activities strengthening the bond between us. I d also like to thank all the friends and family members, and visiting brethren who attended the Installation ceremony and who have supported us through the years. Lastly, I d like to thank the new line of officers: Senior Warden- Skip Harvey, Junior Warden- Ron M. Lewis Jr. PM, Treasurer- David Carideo, Secretary- Dan Moran, Chaplin- Frank Malinowski, Assistant Secretary- Gerry Harris PM, Senior Deacon- Corky Gray, Junior Deacon- John McDannel, Marshal- Luis Echeverria, Senior Steward- Michael Lingan, Junior Steward- Michael Bonner, Organist- Bruce Chubbuck PM and Tiler- Mel Lewis Sr. PM. for doing the work to assure that we will have a strong and prosperous Lodge this year. A Special thanks to Bro. Gene Cummings, good to see you in Lodge. As Master of the Lodge I see complacency taking its toll. The need to re-engage our members and improve participation in Lodge activities is imperative, especially increasing attendance in the Degree Ceremonies. My one request is to have members of our Lodge make a commitment to attend at least one ceremony for each Degree this year and every year hereafter, even the newly initiated to the Master Masons. I would love to have standing room only when we put on Degrees in our Lodge. It would leave a well deserved indelible impression on all present, especially the candidates. I know it can be done because I ve seen it happen when the French Lodge put on an awe-inspiring 1 st Degree ceremony. Our Lodge has a membership in the hundreds, but yet only a few regulars are carrying out the duty of keeping the Lodge afloat. Freemasonry has endured through the centuries since time immemorial, not by recycling the same few (continued on page 6) 3
Greetings From the West, As the first of many Trestleboard articles I hope to complete during my tenure as Senior Warden, I thought it would appropriate to lay out my plans for this year. Next year, if all goes well, I ll be Master of Pasadena Lodge but much needs to be dome before that. I want to do a good job as Master, but one thing is certain, I won t get anything done unless I set some goals and have a plan. My planning started the day I was installed. As the year progresses I hope to have it completed with identifiable and quantifiable goals as well as a list of Brethren who will have a major role in assisting me in achieving my goals; goals directed toward making the Lodge as good as it can be and are not for self-aggrandizement. The areas of planning are: Budget. The first thing I need to get a handle on is the lodge budget. I haven t paid much attention to that in the past and I ve noticed that no one else has either. Dues notices go out, money comes in, and everyone hopes there will be enough to pay the bills. I don t want to hope. I don t want to be surprised. I want to know. My Goals. My main goal is to leave Pasadena Lodge better than I found it. This will involve, at a minimum measurable progress in Ritual, Masonic Candidate Education, Fellowship Activities, Lodge Room and surrounding environs, and Care of our older members as well as their widows and orphans. 4 From The West Senior Warden s Plans for This Year My Officers. I m going to start early to setup my line officers. My objective will be to leave behind me a strong line of committed officers. Ritual Instructor. I want to smooth that operation out. I need a man who knows the ritual, who is willing to help out at rehearsals and who is willing to act as prompter. Education Committee. I have seen too many candidates go through the three degrees learning little or nothing about Masonry. I would like/need five Brothers on my Candidate Education Committee who can help the candidates with their lessons and who are willing to meet with them and explain their degrees using the materials provided in the candidate Instructors Manual. Building Committee. I would like three men who are handy and have some time - perhaps some retired brethren who are willing to make the building a personal project to keep the place will be more shipshape. In most cases it is the first view a candidate has of our fraternity and I want it be favourable and lasting. Candidate Investigations. I want to make sure the lodge s investigators do their job in a timely fashion while checking out each petitioner before recommending him. Programs. I will have twelve stated meetings during my year. For my stated meetings I would like to have programs prepared in advance by (continued on page 5)
Senior Warden continued from page 4 suitable volunteers. I feel that there needs to be a mix of both Masonic and non-masonic programs. My Calendar. I need to set up my calendar for next year showing my stated meetings and enter as soon as I can the programs I have for those meetings. I need to note regularly scheduled suppers and any other special events, such as Past Masters nights or Officer School of Instructions, District Meeting. The first date I have to plan is my installation, and that brings up my next subject. Installation. I need to start planning now. My Meetings. Frankly I get bored with stated meetings. Most people get bored with them. Ours seem to last forever. That is going to change. First, when I want to present something at the meeting, I m going to make sure that my officers know about it and that one of them makes a motion to get it on the floor for discussion. Second, whenever it looks like we re not going to make a decision easily, I am going to appoint a committee and ask them to report back with a recommendation at our next stated meeting. I want a reputation for short, crisp business meetings. A Recognition Night. We need to give better recognition to our Brothers who mark Masonic milestones. A Fellowship Night. Every Lodge needs new members. Fellowship nights have proven themselves to be a good way to introduce Masonry to a prospective member and his wife. Candidates. My goal is to have a number of candidates equal to five percent of my total membership. Communication. Starting now and continuing right through to my successor s installation as Worshipful Master, I have to remember that for one year I will be the voice of Pasadena Lodge. One of the most important parts of my job, if not the most important, is communication. There are several groups that I must reach out to. I need to communicate to my officers. I need to tell them what I expect of them, what lectures I would like them to be responsible for and what committees they will serve on. I need to communicate with the Brethren. I need to speak individually with each brother who attends a Lodge meeting to let him know that I notice him and I appreciate the fact that he is there. I need to remember that my trestleboard is the only way I have to communicate with 90 per cent of my members. I need to make it informative, telling the brethren what is going on. I need to mention names and give credit. I need to communicate with my Past Masters and make them part of my team. I need to communicate with the elder Brethren and the widows. A visit is important. A telephone call is almost as good. I have to remember that I communicate not only my personal concern but also the concern of the whole lodge. As always, the year before us is and will continue to provide us with numerous opportunities and many surprises while we hone our skills in the craft and provide the lodge with that necessary direction to become more skilled and better masons. Daniel Skip Harvey Senior Warden 5
From the South Extend Brotherly Love February is the shortest month of the year, but it is a very special month. It is special because of Valentine s Day. Granted, our wives, sweethearts, or favorite pet usually gets the lion s share of affection or else we would never hear the end of it. Seriously, Brotherly Love is a tenet never to be taken too lightly. People remember kindness and especially remember moments that are life changers. Being that shoulder to lean on or applying your attentive ear are just two ways where we extend Brotherly Love to another fellow human being or perhaps to another living creature like a dog, cat, horse, and so on. To all of our Entered Apprentices, Fellowcrafts, and Master Masons, we look out for each other and take care of our own. We are a family and a rather large extended family at that. So don t forget to send a Brother a kind word if not an inspirational word. I will leave it up to your imagination as to what to get your Lady on Valentine s Day. Fraternally, Ronald M. Lewis, Jr. P.M. MASTERS S MESSAGE continued from page 3 guys in keys positions in the Lodge. In turn knowledge has been passed down within our fraternity to its newest members allowing them to take an active role in perpetuating Freemasonry and its precepts so that future generations will have the opportunity of becoming Masons. Even though the few are willing to do the work, the Lodge still needs to be supported by its membership. Very simple put my goals this year are: to re-engage our members by making the Lodge a Joy to attend, to encourage greater participation in the community, i.e. supporting the Grand Master project Raising a Reader as a committee member on the Public School Advisory Council, which will also assist 6 in awarding college scholarships for California high school students. I have taken my three steps back and took an introspective look at the future of our Lodge and concluded the toughest of all things is needed if we are to survive: Self-Disciple. Looking forward to seeing you in Lodge this year, Fraternally, Tommy Chavies, Master
In Loving Memory of our departed brethren Richard A. Sawaya Raised, October 30, 1958 In Arabic Lodge No. 763 Entered into Rest, December 13, 2011 Lawrence E. Ransom Raised, May 26, 1948 In San Pasqual Lodge No. 452 Entered into Rest, December 31, 2011 Soft and safe to Thee, my Brother Are You Current In Your Dues? If you check your Lodge Membership receipt and you notice that it does not say good through December 31, 2012 it should remind you that your dues have not been paid for Perhaps that has been an oversight on your part or, perhaps you are waiting for the second reminder. If you have the feeling that paying the $82 dues would be a financial hardship, a short note requesting that the dues be remitted is all that would be needed. Remitting dues is not automatic from year to year. It is for one year only and the request must be made each year (if necessary). 7
The Gift of Gab(e) Masons, Roses, and Tradition Last month we celebrated the new year as only Southern Californians can. The biggest party of them all, the Tournament of Roses Parade. A tradition that started 123 years ago as a ploy to lure folks from the frozen midwest and east coast to buy land in beautiful, sunny southern California. Now seen by millions of people around the world. To some, it s not a new year without the Rose Parade. I don t know how many members of the Valley Hunt Club were masons though I suspect there were a few. Pasadena Lodge was seven years old by the time the first parade was held in And I m pretty sure local masons were involved with the formation of the Tournament of Roses Association. What I am sure about is what impact Pasadena masons played in the 2012 edition of this winter classic. We saw the Shrine float in all its glory and a lovely float it was. But I want to concentrate on the brethren of Pasadena Lodge #272. Let s start with Worshipful Brother Bobby Grossman. Bobby is a member and Past Master. His first experience was as a float driver at the tender age of 13! He drove for many years and has filled positions on several Tournament committees. These days he is part of the Liaison and Planning Committee. He is the go between for the Committee and the other agencies involved like the City of Pasadena, CHP, Sheriff, Pasadena Police, fire departments, etc. He can also be seen driving a moped escorting floats to and from the parade route. Brother John McDannel was invited to walk along with the Rotary International float. John has performed much work with Rotary whose prime mission is to eradicate polio throughout the globe. John enjoyed the brisk 5.5 mile walk in the sunshine saying he was glad to have the chance to be in the parade before he was too old to do it. And lastly, yours truly was invited to drive one of the satellite floats that buzzed around the American Honda float called Sweet Dreams. I drove the choo-choo train and was dressed as an engineer. We even had an active DeMolay drive a float. Yep, my son Jonathan, who has never attended a Rose Parade, was chosen as a float driver. He drove the float that depicted a little boy sleeping in a Honda race car bed. I found it to be a great father and son bonding experience. Jonathan found it to be really cool. I was also surprised at how many Phoenix float drivers were masons from other San Gabriel Valley lodges. Of course, it helps when the driver coordinator is a mason. (Thank you, Frank, for giving us the opportunity to fulfill a life-long dream.) After reading this, I guess there are those who will theorize that masons are taking over the Rose Parade as well as the world. My response, How do you know we already haven t? Thought for the Month: Can it be cloudy and foggy at the same time? Gregory J. Gabriel, P.M. 8
