1 DELTA KAPPA GAMMA SOCIETY INTERNATIONAL THE DELTA KAPPA GAMMA SOCIETY AUGUST 2010 Catawba County, Region X, ETA State NU NEWS Volume VI, No. 1 From the President s Desk Thank you for the opportunity to serve as Nu Chapter s president. I hope to measure up to the service of immediate past president, Candace Moretz. She was a marvelous leader who brought Nu Chapter to center stage around the state! Candy has assisted me this summer as I have prepared for this new term. Many of you have been a blessing to me, also, as you said Yes to my requests concerning offices and chairmanships. I appreciate your support and look forward to working with all members as we Embody the Spirit of DKG. Our new International President is Dr. Virginia (Jensi) Souders from Tennessee. Her theme is Embracing Our Vision ~ Designing Our Future. I did not know of her theme when I chose our chapter vision and goals. I believe our vision goes well with her new theme. We will soon learn more about her plans and the direction our Society will take. Our state president, Betty Marshall, chose the theme Becoming Voices of Influence. While trying to decide on a vision for our chapter, I was reading International s website and became struck by the phrase embody the spirit. If we come together (embody) as loyal, enthusiastic (spirit) Delta Kappa Gamma members, then we can be voices of influence for education in our communities. So, there you have it our chapter vision: Embody the Spirit of Delta Kappa Gamma! The state president requested three goals to focus on membership, attendance, and the state theme. I decided we needed a fourth goal to include a few projects from the previous term. The biennium goals are: Nurture relationships among members, both existing and new. Offer stimulating chapter programs that encourage member participation. Be a voice of influence for education in our community. Continue advancing technologically and advocating for conservation. These four goals, though simple, do support the seven purposes and the mission of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. They are vital to the growth of our chapter and to our contribution to excellence in education. I hope you feel they are worthwhile. Our first meeting will be here before we know it! Please mark your calendar now! Come early on the 2 nd and bring money for dues, decals, badges, and raffle tickets for a quilt to support American Cancer Society. See you very soon, Diane
2 Nu Chapter Officers DUES AMOUNT! 2 President Diane Creasman First Vice President Donna Rudisill Second Vice President Marty Rice Recording Secretary Kassie Hollar Corresponding Secretary Emile Blake Treasurer Leslie Black Parliamentarian Pat Gibson WORKSHOP ATTENDANCE On Saturday, June 26, 2010 Diane Creasman, Donna Rudisill, Marty Rice and Leslie Black attended Delta Kappa Gamma leadership training in Asheboro, NC. After attending the training, they had the opportunity to tour our state headquarters. They found a beautifully decorated fully equipped home that includes a large meeting room. They also discovered a plaque noting that one of our Nu Chapter members, Willa Deane Bost, had served on the committee responsible for decorating the building! That was a proud moment. Here are photos of the sign posted in the front yard and the house that serves as our headquarters. National Dues did not increase this year. Yeah! Annual Delta Kappa Gamma, NU Chapter dues are $68.00 ($40 national; $15 state, $13 local chapter). Dues must be paid on or before, but no later than, Tuesday, September 2, the first NU Chapter meeting. In order to meet state and international deadlines for dues, we are required to get your payment before October 1st. After October 15 th, no dues payments can be accepted. Checks should be made payable to NU Chapter. Payment can be given to our treasurer at the September meeting, or you can mail your check to the following address: Leslie Black 4715 Little Mountain Road Catawba, NC If you need reimbursement, please fill out a reimbursement form (These are available at every meeting; see treasurer.) and attach receipts for reimbursement. These forms are used to update our website and yearbook, plus these forms go in a file with your name on it so we ll be ready when it is time to prepare a write-up about you! Minutes to the Board meeting held in August 2009 were reviewed for information pertaining to Eta State in our budget. The treasurer s report from Connie Preiser was presented. It was noted that year end reports have been mailed in to the state and all up dates to accounts have been done. The Literacy money market is balanced at $ The Scholarship money market is balanced at $ The checking account balance is $ (What appeared to be a discrepancy concerning membership fees has been clarified by Connie Preiser.) We will need to decide on a yearly provision in the budget for sending monies to Eta State. We will be writing our new budget soon. Committee chairs need to talk to previous chairs for understanding of what their budgets should be. We approved Leslie Black as our treasurer. Diane Creasman presented the vision and goals for the biennium. (They are described in the president s article.) The Board decided to order 50 decals of Eta State Delta Kappa Gamma to sell for $2 each to our membership. These can be displayed to promote our interest in education for our communities.
