1 September 2013 VIEW FROM THE STUDY FAMILY AFFAIR Youth Sunday was a great day. It is always exciting to see our young people participating, and they always do such an admirable job. And this comes only 3 weeks after Vacation Bible School. Our VBS this year was at night, and as such, could have been called a family affair. As participants, we had 5 members, 9 grandchildren of members, 1 great grandchild of members, and 4 guests. Again, congratulations and thank you to those parents, grandparents, and great grandparents who caused our VBS to be so successful. Successful participation in any of our church events is always about you, the members, taking advantage of the programs offered; taking advantage of the opportunity to fellow and to worship and praise God by participating in the activities in our church. I have often wondered what programs and tactics the Christians of the first century used to excite their membership into participation and evangelism. They lived in a world largely dominated by a non-christian culture. The society was hostile and suspicious of their activities. The early Christians were a rag tag group from every class and from every race; both male and female, Jew and Gentile, slave and free had a voice and acted in the leadership. Their allegiance to each other was legendary, and it is said they felt like the church was their second family. Apparently, they were convinced the Holy Spirit moved within and among them and they were grateful to God for including them and welcoming them into just such a community. The Apostle Paul referred to the early church members as adopted, children of God, brothers and sisters with Christ. A big family, where each member feels a part, each member supports the other, each member encourages their children and grandchildren to fellowship in the name of Christ, to worship and praise in the name of Christ, to mourn and cry together in the name of Christ. I guess we are really using these same tactics today. Reminding ourselves, our families, and the folks we know that in church, you are loved. Come, be loved like family; worship with us. Some things never change. Preparing, encouraging, and practicing for Youth Sunday. Just next week, Sept 8th, is Rally Day. Rally Day is meant to not only inform, but also encourage our members to participate, to try old programs again, and to consider new activities. We plan to recognize our lay leaders and promote our education programs. Are their new programs you would like to see us have at Buffalo? Just ask, and your committee would be excited to put new educational programs in place, any time, any place! New members to be honored include Leah, Rae Anne, and Sam Bradley, Anne and Larry Collins, Linda Cummings, Karen and Tim Johnson, B. J. McCauley, and Pam and Kevin McDonald. Join us in this celebration of what God is doing in our midst.

3 Sara Strickland, We note the passing of Sara Van De Grift Strickland on August 16th in Lucama, NC. She was the wife of Rev. Sefton Strickland, pastor here at Buffalo from 1983 to Sara is remembered for her outgoing personality and her enthusiastic involvement in church activities as well as for her work with the young people. Our condolences to Rev. Strickland and the family. He and his wife, Ginnie, served as Presbyterian Church USA missionaries in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Zaire) and Jamaica from where Bill was engaged in new church development, leadership training, printing and publishing, and theological education. Before and after their missionary service, Bill served churches in Virginia and served on the Presbytery staff of Peaks Presbytery and the Presbytery of Philadelphia. He began his work here in November, Ginnie Smith Reinhold was born in Sanford while her father, Rev. J. Hoge Smith, was pastor of the Olivia, Barbeque, and Cypress churches. The Reinhold s have two children and three grandchildren. Session Corner Highlights from Stated Meeting held August 20, 2013 Admin.: The building fund will now be reported separately. Total of both funds: Balance 06/30/2013 $27, Income $10, Expenses $11, General Fund 07/31/2013 $19, Building Fund $7, End Balance $26, Session has approved the quote from Phil Johnson for the Handicapped Bathroom project of $27,300. He requires that only two spokesmen, Lee and Nelson, work with him during the project. Session gave full support for Admin. to begin fundraising. Buddy was thanked for fixing playground fence. Worship: Ken announced pulpit exchange for Sept. 29th. Rev. Brown Patten from White Hill will come to Buffalo while Rev. Shields will go to St. Andrews. A community picnic will follow at Jonesboro. Rev. Dr. Bill Reinhold will fill the pulpit on Oct. 6th, World Communion. A Peacemaking Offering will be taken on that Sunday instead of Five Cents a Meal. Christian Ed.: Preschool financials are healthy. VBS was very successful. Youth Sunday was held on Aug. 25th. Rally Day, on Sept. 8th, will include a dedication of leaders. Cong. Care: Buddy will be coordinating transportation to Southern Pines for one of our members. Evang./Growth/Com.: Patrick stated that Fats Gaines Catering will provide a fried chicken meal for the New Member Luncheon, Sep.8th. Rick and Cathy Bridges will provide additional items. Women: The Night Circle will blend into the other two circles. Moderator and Co-moderator are still needed. Installation of officers will be held Sep. 8th at end of Service. 5 BUFFALO PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 1333 Carthage Street Sanford, NC GREETING AFTER YOUTH SUNDAY HANDICAP RESTROOMS Have you ever been in one of those half baths in the new houses they build these days? You know the ones they tuck away under the stairs where you hit your head on the sink when you sit down and then the other end when you turn around? Kind of like the ones in the Fellowship Hall! Well guess what? At least at Buffalo we won t have that problem anymore. The new handicap bathrooms are finally on the way! We have received an estimate, which includes plumbing, electrical, construction, and fixtures for $27,500. It s a lot of money but less than the other estimate we had and the work will be done by Phil Johnson (Bobby s Building Fund Goal little boy). Thanks to the anticipation of the bathrooms, we have received donations in the amount of $7750 toward the project! If everyone kicks in what they can, we can to get this long talked about and much needed project done. Hopefully in the next month Phil will get things going and a few months from then we should no longer have members and visitors dancing in the hallway, waiting their turn! Just as a reminder, on your donation, let us know that you are contributing to the building fund so we can give you credit on your tithing sheet and the money goes into the right account. Remember that this is an extra to your regular tithing. We still need those weekly offerings to keep Buffalo running on an even keel. Yours in Christ, The Session * A big Thank You for the crew from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on Keller-Andrew Road. They stopped Sunday morning and asked if we needed help cleaning up the tree at the Manse. First thing Monday morning they showed up with a hard working crew of young men and worked most of the morning cleaning up limbs and cutting branches. We may go to different buildings for worship but the message still rings true, We are all one under God, and need to show our love for our fellow man. Nelson Burke, Administration
