1 2922 Antioch Church Rd Gainesville, GA (church) (Pastor s cell) Antioch united Methodist church When I look at the galaxies on a clear night - when I look at the incredible brilliance of creation, and think that this is what God is like, then instead of feeling intimidated and diminished by it, I am enlarged. I rejoice that I am a part of it. Madeleine L Engle The Journey V O L U M E 1 0, N U M B E R 1 1 Randy s Ramblings Since childhood the month of November has been exciting for me. It is the month of anticipation. By now there are enough ads on T.V. and in print to make us aware that Christmas is getting close. For many adults this is cause for some anxiety, but I still get excited as these special days approach. November brings an increase in activities at Antioch as well as in our households. Soon we will be gathering for Thanksgiving dinner and we will be preparing our sanctuary for Advent. As we begin our preparations there are a few things in particular that I want to keep before you. First, our children will begin on the first Sunday of November to rehearse a Christmas pageant which they will present in December. Rita Edge has agreed to take the lead in putting this pageant together but she will need some help from the rest of us. We need our parents to help us by making sure our children get to rehearsals and by helping them to learn their parts. We need other adults to help with the presentation so parents can enjoy watching their children during the pageant. Remember no child is too young and no child is too old. We will make every effort to use everyone who wants to participate. The second activity I want to keep before you will actually take place in December, but N O V E M B E R it will be early in the month and so I will pass it on to you now. On the first Sunday evening in December, Evelyn and I want to host our congregation for dinner. This will be our Christmas gift to all of you. We have done this in other churches and found it to be a lot of fun, and it provides an opportunity for good fellowship. Please make plans now to join us in Truslow Hall on Sunday, December 7 th at 7:00 p.m. In the meantime I pray you will know the joy of the Lord and find much to be thankful for this month. See you on Sunday, Randy Introducing Vivian and Roland Smith by Ernie and Lois Reaume We would like to introduce Vivian and Roland Smith, who live at 3337 Antioch Lane, Gainesville. In the United Methodist Church, it is celebrated the first Sunday in November. We remember the saints among us who have passed. As November begins, the liturgical color remains green. On November 23, the last Sunday in Pentecost, we will celebrate Christ the King Sunday, completing the Christian Year. On Christ the King Sunday, Christians recognize and worship Christ as king of heaven and earth for all time without challenge and without end. The color for the day is white. Then on November 30, we begin the Christian Year all over again with the first Sunday of Advent when we wait penitently and hopefully for the birth of the Savior. A familiar symbol for Christ the King Sunday, often called the Christ Monogram. Chi and Rho (X and a letter resembling P in Greek) are the first two letters of Christos, or Christ. In this symbol, the Chi and Rho are topped with a crown to denote the kingship of Christ. T H E J O U R N E Y

4 P A G E 4 "Spread love everywhere you go: first of all in your own house. Give love to your children, to your wife or husband, to a next door neighbor... Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier. Be the living expression of God's kindness; kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile, kindness in your warm greeting." Mother Theresa I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 6 P A G E 6 My cooking was so bad my kids thought Thanksgiving was to commemorate Pearl Harbor. Phyllis Diller Freedom from Want by American Artist Norman Rockwell ( ) Appeared in The Saturday Evening Post March 6, 1943 Washington, D.C., October 3, 1863 By the President of the United States of America. A Proclamation. The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God. In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union. Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defence, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle or the ship; the axe has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom. No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation N E W S L E T T E R T I T L E

7 V O L U M E 1, I S S U E 1 P A G E 7 The First Thanksgiving in 1621 by American artist Jean Leon Gerome Ferris ( ) and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility and Union. In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the United States to be affixed. Done at the City of Washington, this Third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixtythree, and of the Independence of the United States, the Eightyeighth. By the President: Abraham Lincoln The Pilgrims made seven times more graves than huts. No Americans have been more impoverished than these who, nevertheless, set aside a day of thanksgiving. Remember God s bounty in the year. String the pearls of His favor. Hide the dark parts, except so far as they are breaking out in light! Give this one day to thanks, to joy, to gratitude.
