1 LIGHT of the George Washington Masonic National Memorial alexandria, virginia volume 24 number Board of Directors Assemble at the Memorial for Semi-Annual Meeting T he 142nd Meeting of the Board of Directors of The George Washington Masonic National Memorial Association was held in Indianapolis, Indiana, on February 17, The focus of the meeting was two-fold: first, the ongoing restoration of the Memorial, and second, the 2023 Centennial Anniversary of the laying of the Cornerstone of the Memorial. The Board approved the continuation of the Memorial restoration with a projected completion by Planning for the Centennial will begin under the leadership of Vice President Kenneth G. Nagel. The 108th Annual Meeting of The George Washington Masonic National Memorial Association was held in Indianapolis, Indiana on February 18, The Active Members of the Memorial Association, the Grand Masters, or their Representatives, of the Grand Lodges of the United States, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico approved changing the Memorial Association By-Laws to facilitate and streamline the oversight of the Memorial s finances. In other business, the following were elected to serve a three-year term on the Board of Directors: Scott A. Thomas, Arizona; J. F. Jeff Webb, Louisiana; John S. Ryan, New Jersey; Mike Rodman, South Dakota; John R. Bo Cline, Alaska; and Thomas K. Sturgeon, Pennsylvania. President s message Washington s Inspiration Persists by Robert P. Conley On November 4, 1752, in Fredericksburg, Virginia, a young man knelt at the altar of Freemasonry and was made a brother of the Craft in due form. This lodge like most Masonic lodges of the time was composed of a small membership, and it met above a tavern in the center of the town. It had just been established two months prior, but this youth wasted no time making his application. The young man being obligated was George Washington, and from that moment forward it has been our Fraternity s great honor to count him among its votaries. Fredericksburg Lodge still exists today as Lodge N o - 4 on the roll of the Grand Lodge of Virginia, and on August 16, while we were in Virginia for our Semi-Annual Meeting, it was the privilege of the Board of Directors of the Memorial Association to travel to Washington s mother lodge and view the many interesting items in its collections. There, we saw the Bible upon which Brother Washington was obligated. We saw the minute book that recorded his initiation, passing, and raising. Experiencing CONTUED ON GE 2 Volume 24 Number

2 PRESIDENT S SSAGE, CONTUED these treasured artifacts only made me reflect more deeply on Washington s life and character. From the beginning of Washington s journey in Fredericksburg, to his role as the Charter Master of the lodge in Alexandria (which now meets in the Memorial), to his laying the cornerstone of the U.S. Capitol building using the traditional Masonic ceremony, our Craft and Washington s destiny were deeply intertwined. Since the beginning of my work with the George Washington Masonic National Memorial Association in 2006, I have kept in mind our solemn purpose: To inspire humanity through education to emulate and promote the virtues, character, and vision of George Washington, the Man, the Mason, and Father of our Country. Now, more than a decade later, as I near the end of my term as the President of the Association, it is deeply gratifying to be able to say that the Memorial s fulfillment of that purpose becomes stronger every year. My involvement with the George Washington Masonic National Memorial has been one of the most defining events in my life. As I look back, and view the progress that so many of our Board members have facilitated, and so many of our staff have accomplished, I truly am humbled to have been involved. I often have said that we all need role models. Illustrious Brother Washington is a model of the power that the individual man has within him to change the world for the better. He is my role model, as are all of those who work for the Memorial in pursuit of its mission. It truly does inspire us to emulate Brother Washington. It certainly has inspired me. The Grand Lodge of Missouri passed their decision to join this important endeavor on September 25. We gratefully acknowledge the generous support of the brethren of Tennessee and Missouri, said George Seghers, the Memorial s Executive Director. We would particularly like to thank Orville R. Armstrong, former board member and Past Grand Master of Tennessee; Ronald D. Jones, Grand Master of Missouri; Gail Turner, Past Grand Master and past board member; and Steve Ponzillo, board member. 3 Message from Alexandria Infinitely More that Just a Memorial by George D. Seghers In these tumultuous times we should remember the words of our First President. In a letter dated May 13, 1791, George Washington wrote to the Congregational Church and Society at Midway, Georgia of the influence of the people of our country: From the gallantry and fortitude of her citizens, under the auspices of heaven, America has derived her independence. To their industry and the natural advantages of the country she is indebted for her prosperous situation. From their virtue she may expect long to share the protection of a free and equal government which their wisdom has established, and which experience justifies as admirably adapted to our social wants and individual felicity. Washington understood that the success or failure of the new nation was ultimately in the hands of the people. As citizens and as Freemasons it is our duty to live and act in accordance with the Masonic principles which helped shape the character of George Washington and subsequently the character of our country. Our Masonic forefathers envisioned and created this truly remarkable George Washington Masonic National Memorial. Built by the grateful Freemasons of our nation as a memorial to our Foremost Freemason and our First President as a gift to the people of our nation so the memory and legacy of the truly great and truly good man who did more and gave more to the creation of our country than any other would not perish but would be passed from generation to generation. This is the goal and the purpose of the Memorial as stated by Louis A. Watres, the second President of the Memorial Association: It is more infinitely more than a Memorial to Washington. It is an outstanding landmark to Freemasonry in its best estate. It is a monument to civil and religious liberty and the stable, orderly and constitutional government that was founded and formed by Washington and the galaxy of patriotic men among whom were included the foremost Masons of his time. The George Washington Masonic National Memorial, honoring and perpetuating the memory and legacy of George Washington is a meaningful and inspiring contribution to the betterment of mankind. The physical structure of the Memorial is symbolic of the greatness and character of the man it memorializes and it must be preserved. Designed in the classical fashion, it reflects the classical reference and model for the new nation created by Washington and our Founding Fathers. Built of granite, it symbolizes the strength, courage, and perseverance of Washington. Erected on the highest hill in the area, it points to the heavens, symbolizing the Divine Guidance and Providence that Washington believed was guiding his efforts in creating our nation. The Memorial was conceived and constructed as a physical representation of the admiration and respect that Freemasons hold for him in whose honor and memory it was erected, our First Citizen, our First President and surely our Foremost Freemason, Brother George Washington. It was his courage, his strength of character, his integrity, his perseverance, and his belief in Divine Providence that guided and were the deciding factors in the success of the American Revolution and the founding of the United States of America. We must not allow his name, his legacy, and his memory to fade away. We must keep him as our example and model of what a citizen and a Freemason should and can be. The character, virtues, and vision of Washington must be preserved and transmitted to this and future generations. The exterior restoration of the Memorial continues and the third to fifth levels of the tower have been enclosed in scaffolding. The heavy and seemingly continuous rain this summer has slowed the restoration, but it is continuing. The Houdon statue of George Washington has been installed in a place of honor in Grand Masonic Hall. The ongoing projects include the re-paving of the front driveway, the replacement of the windows in Memorial Hall and the design and installation of exterior and interior signage. The Family of Freemasonry Exhibit is being expanded to include Shriners International and the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Exhibits. There are numerous other projects in the ongoing maintenance and restoration of the Memorial. Washington s life was a journey of self-improvement through courage, honesty, industry and integrity. He accepted the challenges and burdens placed upon him during the revolution and the founding of our country. We too must accept the challenge and carry forward the restoration and perpetuation of the Memorial. We are thankful for the guidance and support of the Memorial Board of Directors and for the support of the Freemasons and Friends of the Memorial. Without them the Memorial would not exist. 4 Washington s Birthday Gala to Be Held February 23, 2019 Each year, Freemasons, their friends, and families gather at the George Washington Masonic National Memorial to honor the life of Brother Washington on the anniversary of his birth. Our next celebration will be held Saturday, February 23, George Washington Symposium North Lodge Room, 1:00 p.m. Reception Memorial Hall, 5:30 p.m. Concert Memorial Theater, 6:45 p.m. Banquet Grand Masonic Hall, 7:30 p.m. Presentation of the George Washington Memorial Award Grand Masonic Hall, 9:00 p.m. Next year s Gala will feature a special guest. The Memorial Association is pleased to announce that, for the first time in many years, his Excellency will be in attendance, said George Seghers, the Executive Director. Celebrate Washington s birthday with a day of learning, fellowship, entertainment, and fine dining in a setting as inspiring as it is iconic. Limited seating is available. Houdon s George Washington Returns to the Memorial In 1784, the Virginia General Assembly commissioned French sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon ( ) for a full-length statue of George Washington. The next year, Houdon visited Mount Vernon where he measured Washington s arms, legs, hands, and chest and made several plaster life-masks of his face. Houdon completed his marble statue in 1791 or 1792, but it was not delivered to the Virginia state house in Richmond until In the 1850s, the Virginia General Assembly authorized eight bronze castings of the statue, with the first being delivered to the Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, in Over fifty years later, a second casting was authorized. Since then the Gorman Manufacturing Company of Providence, Rhode Island, has cast more than a dozen copies. In 1968, Rock Creek Episcopal Church, Washington D.C., purchased one of Gorman s castings. In 1969, the church placed the statue on long-term permanent loan to the Memorial Association where it was displayed on the first floor, in the east end of Grand Masonic Hall. But the next year it was moved to the Masonic section of nearby Mount Comfort Cemetery. In the 1990s, the church sold the cemetery to Dignity Memorial Inc., but they failed to realize the statue was the property of the Memorial Association. In 2013, Director of Collections Mark Tabbert discovered the statue in the cemetery, but it was not until 2015 that he discovered its true ownership. After several discussions between the cemetery s management and Rock Creek Church, they confirmed the statue is indeed Memorial Association property. In 2017 the statue was repaired and cleaned by Conservation Solutions, Inc., Maryland. Nearly fifty years after it was taken out of the Memorial, the statue returned to its rightful place. In June 2018, workers of Hibernia Masonry maneuvered the 4,000 pound granite base from the parking lot to the large east niche of Grand Masonic Hall. They used a forklift to move it up Houdon s masterful sculpture of George Washington as it now appears, ensconced in the hallway that runs along the eastern end of Grand Masonic Hall. from the parking lot and then used a pallet jack to get it inside. Four holes were drilled in the stone for four large screws that would attach the statue to it. Once down a steep ramp and above its resting spot, workers built a study wood frame below the stone and surrounding the pallet jack. They then filled the frame with ice cubes and pulled the pallet jack out. As the ice was crushed and slowly melted, workers easily landed the stone perfectly into place. They then slid the Houdon statue horizontally above the stone base and, using a series of blocks and wedges, slowly screwed the statue permanently into place. Mark A. Tabbert 4 Volume 24 Number

5 Inside the Museum by Tyler Vanice It has been a productive year for the museum collections. As noted elsewhere in this edition of Light (see the story on page 4), we recently re-acquired one of the famous Houdon statues of Washington. While the Memorial had the statue in its procession since last year, it had taken some time for the conservation work to be completed. The Collections Department is glad to say that statue is now standing proudly on the first floor where the giant bust of Washington previously overlooked the Grand Masonic Hall. The niche in which the statue is placed is painted with scenes of Washington s beloved home at Mount Vernon, provide an ideal setting for the Memorial s casting of this classic statue. The Museum Accreditation Process The Memorial continues to pursue becoming accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. The accreditation process is based upon an institution s budget, preservation, and conservation. Of course, the accrediting process moves slowly. Accreditation requires high profile, peer-based validation from professionals from around the country, whose task it is to critique and engage the museum s operations and impact. Accreditation also increases the museum s credibility and value to funders, policy makers, insurers, community, and peers. Perhaps most more importantly, accreditation helps the museum by fostering improved relationships with other museums, which can result in more loans and traveling exhibitions. Tracking our Acquisitions As with many institutions, the Collections Department is slowly working to move our software into the twenty-first century, but it takes time. We are in the middle of updating our museum collections management software to PastPerfect as we continue to work towards becoming an accredited museum. 6 department had been able to get by with Microsoft Access, as the museum collection only had a little over 1,200 objects. Since 2013, the collection has more than doubled, currently holding over 2,880 objects. As of September 1, we have received 17 donations which totaled about 100 objects. We are fortunate to note that the donations do not seem to be stopping any time soon. In addition to upgrading our software, we are making improvements in collection storage as well as updating our policies. We are having a second site-visit later in the year to find out where we currently stand with collection stewardship and everything that is included. We have also been digitizing proceedings, mostly York Rite and Grand Lodge related, over the past few months. This will help make researching more convenient and ensure the longevity of the information. Grand Lodges and other Masonic bodies may contact the Memorial about how they can get involved in the process if they desire to have their proceedings online. How to Contribute Materials Our collection policy limits what we collect, but we often receive unique and exciting items that are a perfect fit for the collection. In August, we obtained a beautiful creamware plate dating back to the early nineteenth century with hand-painted Masonic motifs (as shown, bottom right). We also received a splendid silkscreen Masonic apron, rich with lodge emblems, dating from the early nineteenth century (shown on page 5), and a inch engraving that illustrates the destruction by fire of Philadelphia s old Chestnut Street Masonic Temple in 1819 (top right). Other unique items we obtained were an early nineteenth century ice cream mold which shapes the ice cream into a square and compasses image, as well as an item of wall décor with Masonic motifs that has brilliant colors as the background was made with butterfly wings. 7 Mount Vernon Research Fellowship Mark A. Tabbert, the Memorial Association s Director of Collections, was awarded a one-month Research Fellowship at the Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington at George Washington s Mount Vernon. He is completing his fellowship in September, spending the month living at a scholars residence just steps from the library. During his time there, he hopes to complete the manuscript for the forthcoming book: A Deserving Brother : George Washington and Freemasonry. Published by the University of Virginia Press, it will present every known letter, document, and artifact that attests to George Washington s membership in, and relationship with Freemasonry from his 1752 initiation into the Lodge at Fredericksburg to Martha Washington agreeing to send a lock of his hair to the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts after his death in Tabbert is one of eighteen fellows for the year. Fellowships range from one to six months. According to the Mount Vernon Library, fellowships are awarded for research related to the broad themes and historical problems of Colonial America, the Revolutionary Era, and the Early Republic as well as the history of the arts, material culture, and society which help us better understand the greater legacy of George Washington and his home, Mount Vernon. Finally, projects related to national memory, philanthropy, and the history of historic preservation are also encouraged as our resources include the archives of the Mount Vernon Ladies Association the oldest national organization dedicated to historic preservation in the United States. A major Masonic symposium on Freemasons in the Transatlantic World met at the Memorial, September 14 through 16. It was held under the auspices of England s Quatuor Coronati Lodge N o , regarded as the world s premier lodge of research, in association with the Mid-Atlantic Convocation of Academic Lodges. The theme of the conference brought approximately 180 participants from around the world to the Memorial s theater for three days of learning and scholarly exchange. The conference opened with an insightful presentation on The Conflicted Identity of Early 18th Century English Freemasonry by Prof. Paul Kléber Monod. Other speakers included Neil Wynes Morse, Susan Snell, Robert L.D. Cooper, Andreas Önnerfors, Jeffrey Croteau, Marsha Keith Schuchard, Shawn Eyer, John Acaster, Adam Kendall, and Oscar Alleyne. Also featured was a spirited debate between Ric Berman and Susan Mitchell Sommers regarding the origins of the first Grand Lodge of England. Fellowship enriched the scholarly dialogue. On Friday evening, the Grand Lodge of the District of Columbia offered a Universal Lodge program, followed by a talk on symbolism by Akram Elias, Past Grand Master of D.C. On Saturday morning, The Patriot Lodge N o (D.C.) hosted a meeting of the Convocation of Academic Lodges in the Memorial s North Lodge Room. Quatuor Coronati Lodge is very grateful to George Seghers and the team at the George Washington Masonic National Memorial, said Ric Berman, the principal organizer of the conference, particularly to Q.C. member Mark Tabbert and Tyler Vanice for their assistance with guaranteeing that the event ran smoothly. International Masonic Research Conference Hosted by the Memorial Dr. Ric Berman welcomes the attendees on the first morning of the conference. 8 The Landmark Century Campaign for the George Washington Masonic National Memorial Restoration Update: More Light by Shawn E. Eyer It is a distinct privilege to observe the work being done daily at the George Washington Masonic National Memorial as the restoration work continues. This important endeavor is intended both to fully restore the Memorial and, in some cases, to enhance it in ways suitable to its status as a National Historic Landmark. Because of the support that we receive from you, several important projects have been made possible in Brilliant Lighting on the Memorial s Tower Since late June, visitors to Alexandria have been struck by the impressive new lighting on the Memorial s tower. This is the result of our ongoing project to upgrade the building s lighting system. The new Acclaim Lighting LEDs are RGBW arrays that can project pure, brilliant white light in addition to any mixture of red, green, and blue. There are 22 of the fixtures on the ledge On Independence Day, the new LED lighting lit the Memorial s tower brilliantly. 9 around the fifth floor exterior, and 18 around the (smaller) seventh floor. Because these 40 new fixtures can be independently controlled, a wide range of color effects will be possible in the future. Community feedback on the new lighting has been overwhelmingly positive. Similar LED lighting has already been installed on the Pyramid level and the Memorial s Portico. In the future, lighting upgrades will be needed for the third floor and other areas as well. The end result will be a fully-customizable lighting system which will beautify the Memorial and raise awareness of its important presence and vital message. Memorial Hall Windows Our building s spectacular Memorial Hall has already received many upgrades, from the addition of accessibility ramps to the complete restoration of the Cornerstone Mural in The next project for Memorial Hall will be the restoration of the six upper-level windows. In 1922, the Memorial s architect, Harvey Wiley Corbett, said that The George Washington Masonic National Memorial will contain in the central portion of the ground floor a large memorial hall. At the end of the hall opposite the entrance will stand a statue of George Washington of heroic size. The walls of the hall will be surrounded by a colonnade and it will be lighted with clearstory windows at the sides. Beneath these windows will be mural paintings of an historic character. The windows were to be of amber glass, braced by a neoclassical bronze grille similar to those found on the rest of the Memorial s windows. However, although this was called for by the Memorial s designer one of America s most renowned architects these windows were never installed. Now, with your support, the Memorial will be enabled to make the original vision for Memorial Hall complete. The damaged stained glass windows presently used will be removed and stored for future conservation. When the new, correct windows are installed, the additional light will more effectively illuminate the statue and the murals. And visitors will experience Memorial Hall for the very first time as the planners of the Memorial originally intended. As we begin our first century as a National Historic Landmark, it is imperative that we support this work so that future generations will be able to receive the Memorial s positive message. Our purpose is to honor the life and memory of George Washington in a way that will continue to impress and inspire those who come to experience the Memorial and learn from its message. Convenient monthly payments allow you to support the Memorial s restoration at your own pace. As a donor s cumulative totals builds month after month, higher recognition levels are reached over time.
