THIS WEEK Living Hope: A Celebration of the New Year Living Hope: A Celebration of the New Year, a special service to explore and lift up the many dimensions of hope in our lives will be held Tuesday, January 28 from 7 to 8 pm in the chapel with refreshments - cookies, coffee, milk and soup - served afterwards. The new year is a time for new beginnings. Bring your burdens and your dreams with you and a friend, too, if you d like. Through music, scripture and reflection, the service will offer you the opportunity to embrace the place of hope in your life for the year ahead. Bible and Bagels Bible and Bagels meets Wednesdays from 7:30 to 8:30 am in the Jin Room. All are welcome! The lesson this week is from Genesis 39 and Psalm 15. 7

11 The Lessons Today s Scripture: Genesis 32: The same night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two maids, and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. He took them and sent them across the stream, and likewise everything that he had. Jacob was left alone; and a man wrestled with him until daybreak. When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he struck him on the hip socket; and Jacob s hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. Then he said, Let me go, for the day is breaking. But Jacob said, I will not let you go, unless you bless me. So he said to him, What is your name? And he said, Jacob. Then the man said, You shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with humans, and have prevailed. Then Jacob asked him, Please tell me your name. But he said, Why is it that you ask my name? And there he blessed him. So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life is preserved. The sun rose upon him as he passed Penuel, limping because of his hip. Next Sunday: Micah 6: 1-8; Psalm 15; 1 Corinthians 1: 18-31; Matthew 5: 1-12 As part of your daily devotions, read the lessons. What image or word catches your attention? How do they settle or challenge you? Keep notes of your observations in a journal. Set aside part of each day for prayer and study. 11

13 Today s anthem, Remembering the Promise, written by Anne Wilson, was commissioned by Dale and Elaine Dannefer to commemorate the life of their son Jonathan Michael ( ). Jon had graduated from NYU in music and was studying cognitive science at Case Western Reserve when he was diagnosed with leukemia in John had become a talented songwriter who believed that music had healing power, and the songs he wrote often carried existentially and spiritually challenging messages. Remembering the Promise reflects his appreciation for Gregorian chant and his mastery of the tenor saxophone. The words from the chant Ubi Caritas and from Revelation 21: 3-4 remind us of the promise that God is with us now and in the future. Ubi caritas (sung in Latin) Where charity and love are, God is there. Love of Christ has gathered us into one. Let us fear, and let us love the living God. And may we love each other with a sincere heart. From Revelation 21: 3-4 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying Look! God s dwelling place is now among the people, And he will dwell with them. They will be his people, And God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death, there will be no more mourning, There will be no more crying, there will be no more pain, For the old order of things has passed away. 13
