Cleveland Jazz Orchestra in Hudson Meet the Pacesetters at 5:00 pm at the gazebo at the corner of SR 91 and 303 in Hudson this evening, and we ll find a place to sit for the 6:00 pm concert. Interim Youth Director Caitlin Desjardins Arriving August 25 Please welcome Interim Youth Director, Caitlin Desjardins! We hope all congregants will join us after worship on Sunday, August 25 for a reception to welcome Caitlin as our Interim Youth Director. Youth (grades 6-12) and parents are invited to stay until 12:30 that day to be part an activity designed just for them, to help them get to know this talented young woman...and for her to begin to know you! 8 Save the Date Book Discussion The book discussion on Chasing Francis will be held Friday, August 30 at 7 pm. Social Groups and Circles Iris Circle (all women of the church) Iris Circle members are invited for an outing at Kathy Hanna-Stauffer's cottage on the shore of Lake Erie in Madison, Ohio, on Tuesday, August 20. Meet at the church at 9:30 am if you want to carpool; it takes about an hour to get there. Bring a salad or other item to share for lunch. Plan to return mid-to-late afternoon. See Kathy for maps and directions. Hilltoppers The Congregation is invited to join the Hilltoppers for a Potluck Luncheon in Fellowship Hall on Friday, Sept. 6, at 11:30 am. The luncheon will be followed by a presentation in South Hall (at 12:30 pm) by Carol Grube on the use of quilts by the Underground Railroad during the Civil War era. Reservations are necessary and should be made to Dene Young. School Supplies It's almost back to school time! 9 The Lessons Today s Scripture: Psalm 37 Do not fret because of the wicked; do not be envious of wrongdoers, for they will soon fade like the grass, and wither like the green herb. Trust in the Lord, and do good; so you will live in the land, and enjoy security. Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act. Hebrews 11: 1-3, 8-16 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Indeed, by faith our ancestors received approval. By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are not visible. By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to set out for a place that he was to receive as an inheritance; and he set out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he stayed for a time in the land he had been promised, as in a foreign land, living in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. For he looked forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God. By faith he received power of procreation, even though he was too old and Sarah herself was barren because he considered him faithful who had promised. Therefore from one person, and this one as good as dead, descendants were born, as many as the stars of heaven and as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore. All of these died in faith without having received the promises, but from a distance they saw and greeted them. They confessed that they were strangers and foreigners on the earth, for people who speak in this way make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. If they had been thinking of the land that they 9

10 had left behind, they would have had opportunity to return. But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; indeed, he has prepared a city for them.
