Thursdays, Oct. 1 Nov. 19, 7-9 pm $120 Fairmount Presbyterian Church, 2757 Fairmount Blvd, CH For the Trappist monk Thomas Merton, the contemplative quest included not only monks and nuns in cloisters, but all who seriously sought the Holy in prayer and work, regardless of religious persuasion or temperament. This course introduces the main themes of Merton s spiritual vision such as the search for freedom, the true self, and prayer of the heart. Bold and Brazen: Hearing the Hebrew Prophets Today Rev. Barbara J. Essex Thursdays, Oct. 8-29, 7-9 pm $60 Church of the Saviour, 2537 Lee Rd, CH We live in a post-everything world, ruled and shaped by technology and scientific advancements. Yet intolerance, violence, exploitation, stereotyping, misunderstandings, and misinformation prevail. In their critique of empire and status quo and the call to action of various kinds, the prophets of ancient Israel have a message for us today. We will explore various aspects of Hebrew prophecy in ancient contexts as a way of understanding select current events and how we might respond. 14 The Lessons Job 1: 1, 2: 1-10 There was once a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job. That man was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil. One day the heavenly beings came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them to present himself before the Lord. The Lord said to Satan, Where have you come from? Satan answered the Lord, From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it. The Lord said to Satan, Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man who fears God and turns away from evil. He still persists in his integrity, although you incited me against him, to destroy him for no reason. Then Satan answered the Lord, Skin for skin! All that people have they will give to save their lives. But stretch out your hand now and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse you to your face. The Lord said to Satan, Very well, he is in your power; only spare his life. So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord, and inflicted loathsome sores on Job from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. Job took a potsherd with which to scrape himself, and sat among the ashes. Then his wife said to him, Do you still persist in your integrity? Curse God, and die. But he said to her, You speak as any foolish woman would speak. Shall we receive the good at the hand of God, and not receive the bad? In all this Job did not sin with his lips. 15 Peace be to the WHOLE community, and love with faith. Ephesians 6:23 During recent weeks, images of Syrian families escaping violence and seeking refuge in neighboring countries and Europe have unsettled our peace and broken our hearts. Now in its third year, the violence in the region continues, leaving 250,000 dead and four million refugees who continue to suffer deprivation and uncertainty. The world finds itself in need of a profound witness to the Prince of Peace. In the letter to the Ephesians, we hear the words Peace be to the WHOLE community, a reminder that the peace of Christ is not fully realized in each of us until all of us work for healing and wholeness in every place of violence. The Peace and Global Witness Offering provides opportunities for Presbyterians to respond to cultures of violence, around the corner and around the world from our local neighborhood to Syrian refugees. 15

16 Gifts to the offering will support Syrian refugees who still hope for an end to violence and a peaceful future for their children. Because of the work of our church partners in Lebanon, the children of Syrians displaced by the war and sheltering in refugee camps will be able to resume their education. They will receive school supplies, a place to learn, and teachers, paving the way to a brighter future in a desperate situation. Your gift makes it possible for children to learn and teachers to teach: these are tools of hope for people struggling to make a life in camps and nourish hope for a return to their homes. A violent and broken world calls all of us to offer our gifts and play our part. Through our gifts, we join in God s mission of peace and reconciliation.
