Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of Your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love You and worthily magnify Your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. If we say we have no sin we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins, and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Therefore, let us confess our sins in the presence of God and of one another. Silence is kept for self reflection. Most merciful God, we confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways, to the glory of Your holy name. In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for His sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

4 PRAYER OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. O God, our refuge and strength, since you yourself are the author of our devotion, graciously consider the devout prayers of your Church. May those things which we ask in faith effectively follow by your grace; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. FIRST READING Genesis 32: The same night {Jacob} arose and took his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. 23 He took them and sent them across the stream, and everything else that he had. 24 And Jacob was left alone. And a man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day. 25 When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he touched his hip socket, and Jacob s hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. 26 Then he said, Let me go, for the day has broken. But Jacob said, I will not let you go unless you bless me. 27 And he said to him, What is your name? And he said, Jacob. 28 Then he said, Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed. 29 Then Jacob asked him, Please tell me your name. But he said, Why is it that you ask my name? And there he blessed him. 30 So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, saying, For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life has been delivered. SECOND READING 2 Timothy 3:14-4:5 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. 1 I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: 2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. 3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. 5 As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. SERMON Chaplain Mike Greenwalt HYMN OF THE DAY My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less ELW 597 APOSTLE S CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. 7

7 He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Our help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. So let us lift our prayers to Him who invites us to pray and never lose heart. Brief silence Merciful Father, teach us to pray with persistence because You love us, always provide for us and promise to give justice to Your elect who cry out to You day and night. Grant us faith that wrestles with You but trusts that You remain in control. Do not let us go until You have blessed us with forgiveness, guidance and eternal life with Christ. Lord, in Your mercy, Merciful Father, You granted Jacob a new name. Thank You for bestowing on each of us a new name in Baptism. Preserve us in faith, and grant to each of us a love for learning Your Word and a yearning to receive Your forgiveness. By Your Holy Spirit, enable us to remain in what we have learned and received from You. Lord, in Your mercy, Merciful Father, because all Scripture is inspired by Your Spirit, teach us to use it for reproving, restoring and raising Your people in righteousness, so that all of us are equipped for every good work. Lord, in Your mercy, Merciful Father, fill Your Church with ministers who preach Your Word and are ready to care for Your flock in good times and bad. Because the time has come when people are not interested in sound teaching but have 8

8 itching ears, provide us with faithful preachers, endow us with the wisdom to distinguish Your truth from human lies, and grant us repentance when we long for pastors who suit our sinful desires. Lord, in Your mercy, Merciful Father, give all parents the desire and resources to teach their children the sacred Scriptures that are able to make us wise for salvation through faith in Christ. Bless all schools, administrators, teachers and students. Use them to prepare young people for lives of service to You and to our world. Provide godly men and women to teach, and grant them the knowledge and skills necessary for their work. Lord, in Your mercy, Merciful Father, provide our society with judges and leaders who both fear You and respect people. Lead them to godly decisions and make them honorable in word and deed. Defend those who serve in our military. Keep them safe and provide them with courage. Bless this land and enable us to live as good citizens. Lord, in Your mercy, Merciful Father, because You neither slumber nor sleep, deliver us from evil. Especially we beg You to keep the lives of those who are faced with sickness, injuries and troubles, including all those we name now, either out loud or silently in our hearts. (Pause for spoken and silent prayers..) Lord, in Your mercy, Merciful Father, grant contrite hearts to all who come to receive Christ s body and blood. Nourish us with His life, and strengthen us by this Holy Meal to pray, believe and serve. Preserve us in faith as You preserved Your people who now rest with You. Lord, in Your mercy, Merciful Father, as You have promised, keep safe our coming in and our going out from this time forth and forevermore, for we pray in the name of Jesus, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. PEACE The peace of the LORD be with you always. And also with you. 9

We believe and teach that Christ is truly present in the bread and wine/juice, which are his body and blood.
