2 March 24, 2019 FROM THE EAST Greetings Brethren: The Grand Master has proclaimed that all Lodges should participate in some activity with one of our Masonic youth organizations during the month of April. I have planned just such an event and have invited the Rainbow Girls from Richmond Assembly No. 10 to come to our April Stated Communication. They will be conducting a bake sales so please bring some cash to support them. I have also chosen a speaker that will hopefully inspire them to continue to grow into strong, successful, women. Our speaker will be Amber Robinson, a Nuclear Engineer at Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, Virginia, who will give a fascinating presentation on Nuclear power as it relates to the United States Navy. Amber has spoken before at Temple No. 9 and was very engaging. We will then retire to the lodge room where the Rainbow Girls will give us insight into some of their ritual and a chance to hear what being a part of Rainbow means to them. I am extremely excited about initiating Mr. Christian Sookdeo on April 25th. As our senior deacon, I have placed Worshipful John Edelin in charge of putting together the Entered Apprentice degree team. Worshipful John is also serving as the Junior Deacon class sponsor whose members did a superb job exemplifying the EA degree in March. Please congratulate Worshipful John the next time you see him! Mr. Sookdeo, and those like him, represent the future of Metropolitan No. 11 and the future of Masonry. It is my request that you relax the length of your cable tow and come out and support this young man as we initiate him into this great fraternity. Finally, we will have a volunteer opportunity in late April or early May. Brother Scott LaRochelle is working with the Childhood Language Learning Center to put together a project to give their boardroom a much needed face lift. Clemmer Worshipful Master Brethren, FROM THE WEST In past years we have had a Lodge Family Day at the Diamond. Everyone enjoys a Hot Dog and the ball game. This year I am proposing something different. A Family Day at Colonial Shooting Academy that includes range time and BBQ from Mission BBQ. You can bring your weapon of choice including your own ammunition, ear and eye protection, at a cost of $30.00 per person, or you can rent the weapon of your choice, hand gun $17.00, long gun $22.00, full auto $35.00, plus the cost of ammunition. Everyone is required to complete a range safety course which can be taken online. Mission BBQ will cater the event and it will include Pulled and Chopped BBQ, Baked Beans, Greed Beans, Cole Slaw, Rolls, and various sauces, sweet tea or lemonade for approximately $13.75 ea. The cost per person for the range, the meal, and the lounge rental would be approximately $ I will be collecting the names at our next stated communication of the Brothers who would be interested in a Family Day at Colonial Shooting Academy. 4 Page 3 The Glass Harmonium Franklin invented it (1752), Mesmer purchased it ( ), Mozart wrote for it (1791), Beethovan too (1814). Its name is derived from the Greek word for harmony. It s a type of musical instrument that uses a series of glass bowls graduated in size to produce musical tones by means of friction. Mesmer, Franklin and Mozart were all Freemasons, a group that enthusiastically welcomed glass music for the promotion of human 'harmony'. Mesmer and Mozart knew each other, and Mesmer and Franklin knew each other (alas Mozart and Franklin never met). Br. Franz Mesmer was German physician who developed a theory and clinical practice of 'animal magnetism' or 'mesmerism'. It's from Mesmer that we get the word "mesmerize". The practice of Mesmerism which led to Hypnotism. He owned a particularly fine glass armonica, played it well, and it was an integral part of his 'mesmerizing' practice. In 1773 father and son Mozart were in Vienna and encountered the armonica at Franz Mesmer's house. A few weeks later Leopold brought up the armonica again, mentioning that Wolfgang himself tried playing Mesmer's instrument. Mozart later immortalized his former patron by including a joking reference to Mesmer in his opera Cosi fan tutte, The glass harmonium was one of the most celebrated instruments of the 18th century. Franklin began to take his with him when he traveled and played popular Scottish tunes or original compositions for his audiences. Because of its popularity, it seemed destined for permanence. But by the 1820s, it was nearly a forgotten instrument. M:. W:. Br. Benjamin Franklin said, "Of all my inventions, the glass armonica has given me the greatest personal satisfaction."
