2 December 21, 2018 FROM THE EAST Greetings Brethren! I shared the following comments at our installation in December, but wanted to share it with the rest of the brethren who weren t able to attend. For those of you at the installation, please forgive the repetition. I promise new content in next month s bulletin. I came across the following story when preparing for my comments. An old man walks down to the beach and sees it is covered with tens of thousands of starfish, as far as the eye can see. Far down the beach he sees a young girl who is picking the starfish up, one by one, and tossing them back in the ocean. Amused, he walks to the girl to speak with her. Little girl, the old man says, What are you doing? I m saving these starfishes lives, says the girl. If I don t throw them back in the water, they ll die. They need the water to live. The old man laughs to himself. Näive girl, he thinks, and then says to her, But you are only one person. There are tens of thousands of starfish on this beach. How can you possibly make a difference? The girl bends down, picks up a starfish, looks at it, looks up at the man, tosses it into the surf, then says, I made a difference for that one. Our Lodge, Masonry, and our broader community face many challenges and changes. Change can be uncomfortable. However, change is not a word that should evoke negative feelings or emotions, quite the opposite. I ran across a quote attributed to John Henry Newman... To live is to change, and to be perfect is to change often. What a powerful statement! We often think of perfection, once obtained, as something concrete and unchanging; but deeper reflection will reveal it is not. A few weeks ago, my wife, Alison, commented on the beauty of a tree whose leaves had turned a fiery shade of orange. The perfect representation of the splendor of fall. But the splendor of fall fades in mere weeks, only to be replaced by the drab and desolate winter. BUT, out of the cold and decay of winter: new life emerges with the wonder and glory of spring. Perfection through change. Change is often uncomfortable, but it is necessary and inevitable. Our great fraternity is faced with many challenges that necessitate change. My goal this year is to help continue to lead this lodge through change and the associated opportunities it brings. This year will be exciting and full of opportunities; and I am looking forward to the journey with you. We will have opportunities this year to shine the light of masonry outside of our Lodge and rekindle its fire from within. We will do this by engaging the community through fellowship and volunteer opportunities. We will redouble our efforts toward Masonic education by emphasizing, and rewarding, attendance at our regular ritual practice. As well as Masonic education at most of our stated meetings. However, these are just opportunities. I need you, the lodge needs you, and the community needs you to be involved to make the most of these opportunities. That little girl made a huge difference for each of those creatures she saved although the circumstances were overwhelming. In the same way, you can help advance Masonry, yourself, and the community, one person at a time, with just one or two small actions.

3 Page 2 I look forward to serving as your Worshipful Master this year. I welcome any ideas you may have along the way that helps us advance our lodge, Masonry, or our lives in general. My ask is that each of you dedicate yourself this year to finding and acting on those small opportunities. Not only in Masonry but in your everyday lives. 4 Page 3 MEET YOUR NEW WORSHIPFUL MASTER Worshipful Jason Dwayne Clemmer was born in Richmond, Virginia on June 1, He attended Chesterfield County public schools and graduated from Manchester High School in Jason attended two civilian flight schools (Spartan Aeronautics and Southern Nazarene University), but left to start his career in Information Technology in Jason and his wife Alison were married in November of 2001 and have daughter, Violet, who is 9 years old and a member of the National Elementary Honor Society for achieving straight A s for 3 consecutive quarters. Before Masonry, Jason volunteered for Forest View Volunteer Rescue Squad from where he left as a Crew Lieutenant, Basic Life Support Preceptor, and EVOC Preceptor. He petitioned and became a member of Metropolitan Lodge No. 11 in 2014, where he was Raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason on July 24, Jason is currently employed with CapTech Consulting as a Senior Management Consultant. 5 Page 4 Brother Poinsett Joel Roberts Poinsett was an American physician and diplomat. He was the first U.S. agent in South America, a member of the South Carolina legislature and the United States House of Representatives, the first United States Minister to Mexico, a Unionist leader in South Carolina during the Nullification Crisis, Secretary of War under Martin Van Buren, and a co-founder of the National Institute for the Promotion of Science and the Useful Arts (later became the Smithsonian Institute). Brother Joel Roberts Poinsett, was a Past Master of Recovery Lodge No. 31, Greenville, SC, and Solomon's Lodge No. 1, Charleston, SC. In 1825 President and Br. James Monroe (Williamsburg Lodge No. 6) appointed Poinsett as the first U.S. ambassador to Mexico. Poinsett urged independence from Europe under America s Monroe Doctrine. He introduced the plant into the US in 1828, and thus the name poinsettia. While in Mexico he had established one or two lodges of Free-Masons, and though none but prominent patriots and republicans became members of these societies they were charged with being a secret means for the reestablishment of Spanish authority. In 1837 President Martin Van Buren named Poinsett secretary of war. He set out to improve the nation s paltry army of eight thousand poorly trained soldiers. He raised standards and sent officers to Europe for instruction. In 1838 Congress enlarged the army to 12,577 men. Leaving office in 1841, Poinsett spent his last decade on his Greenville District farm and his wife s Santee plantation near Georgetown.
