1 The Bell Tower All Saints Episcopal Church Reisterstown Parish A Letter from Fr. David Our hearts are restless until we find rest in God (Saint Augustine) Dear All Saints family and friends, Hurrah for summer! Last month I wrote how busy our summer would be especially with the Vacation Bible Celebration and the activities of the youth group still to come. We are grateful that Reid Conley has decided to spend his summer with us as a ministry intern for youth to help Heidi with the planning and supervision of the events. Remember the VBC is the week of July 8-12 at Emory Grove. If you haven t signed up to help you are invited to drop in and witness the wonderful activities put on for the children of our community at Emory Grove. Volume 13, Number 7 July 2013 Vision Statement: All Saints strives to be a place where people come to know Jesus Christ, are transformed to His glory, and become witnesses to God s unchangeable word. Inside this issue: Letter from Fr. David 1 Library Corner 2 Stewardship Corner 3 ALSo Tour 3 Announcements 6 Calendar of Events 7 Closing 8 Another aspect of summer for many is to do some summer reading. Our library is one of the best church libraries around and there are numerous books available. If Fletcher Hall is locked please call the office so we can accommodate your schedule. I was browsing through my personal library and picked up a little book that I had not read in years. Published in 1974 Parables For the Present by Christine Heffner is a series of timeless little stories that are relevant today. One of the stories is The Homesick King It begins with a fairy tale about a prince who was kidnapped as a child and raised in poverty. When he had grown he was found and succeeded to the throne. But he had fond memories of his friends and family where he grew up. Now that the young king had everything he could possibly want he was miserable. He had power over his empire, riches, and every comfort imaginable but yet he was frustrated and unhappy. The author likened his story to life today. God created human beings to be rulers and stewards over all creation and in spite of the natural disasters that happen. Men and women have discovered some of this world s awesome secrets and have put this knowledge to work as technology continues to change our lives. The story goes on to tell how in spite of our knowledge, power, and our status from God as the crown of creation so many are frustrated, restless, and filled with fear and anxiety. The story concludes with the question, So what is the matter? Statistics show that we (at least in the USA) have never had it so good and yet there is so much despair. What is the matter? Like the young prince we are too homesick. No sense of power, comfort, pleasure, or possessions can take the place of our home with God. God made mankind for Himself and our hearts are restless unless we find our rest in our Heavenly Father. This is a good lesson as we fill our summer with, trips or whatever activities we have in mind. Make sure we make room for God so we don t get homesick. And find a good book, you will never know what you might discover. Fr. David
2 Volume 13, Number 7 The Bell Tower Page 2 RUMMAGE SALE 2013: submitted by Mary Thayer THANK YOU TO EVERYONE who participated in our 9th Rummage Sale! All the donations of clothing, linens and garden items were most appreciated. We had wonderful help from beginning to end. We also thank our customers - members of our church family and also members of our community. We made $1, Hope to do it again in June 2014! God s Older Children Caregivers Ministry Drivers Needed The Caregivers Ministry would like to develop a listing of those individuals who can help at times to provide transportation for our church family who are: (1) unable to drive; or (2) temporarily restricted from driving. So far, most of the requests have been for transportation to and from medical appointments. Helping with local errands is also a possibility. For scheduling and coordinating purposes, we ask that those with needs give as much notice to Jean in the office ( ) or Carroll Johnson ( ). Those interested in helping with this program are asked to call Carroll Johnson or to: memaflash@yahoo.com, to be a participant. Even if you participated in the past, please notify me if you can continue in order to have a current listing. Thank you for your support. Carroll From the Library Corner The Visionary Christian (131 Readings from C.S. Lewis) Edited by Chad Walsh Although many of us have become familiar with C.S. Lewis' writings by reading MERE CHRISTIANI- TY and THE FOUR LOVES, which remind us of valuable principles of Christian living, many of us have not been exposed to the author's more imaginative side, his fiction and poetry. THE VISIONARY CHRISTIAN offers the reader a sampling of his more fanciful writings from the Narnia series, SCREWTAPE LET- TERS, TILL WE HAVE FACES, and THE GREAT DIVORCE, all illustrating Christian truths through the use of rich figurative language, allegories, fairy tales, science fiction, and poems. by Barbara Carr After reading these short selections, many readers, being impressed with the author's genius and versatility, will want to read more of his books in their entirety, as well as his biography. Reading each writing is more meaningful after recognizing its source. The titles of each writing and its source are listed in the rear of the book in alphabetical order. This book can be found in Groff Hall on the table with more books by C.S. Lewis
3 Page 3 Stewardship Corner I would like to reiterate the thoughts of a portion of Father David s May Bell Tower opening letter which explained the financial facts of our very successful ministries. One of the vestry s responsibilities is keeping the church in a solvent financial position and dutifully approving certain expenditures. Having our ministries paying their fair share would be a reasonable course to follow. It is certainly a fresh way of looking at our stewardship and involving our church family in support of our ministries and outreach programs. In His Service, Carroll Johnson Submitted by: Carroll Johnson ALL SAINTS ON TOUR S NEXT FEATURE: Betsy Patterson Bonaparte THE BELLE OF BALTIMORE Plan now to join our private tour of this year s outstanding exhibit at the Maryland Historical Society, highlighting the life of one of Baltimore s most famous and controversial women. The collection features many items not seen publically for decades, all about the woman who fell in love with Napoleon s brother, only to spend the remainder of her life trying to claim her place among royalty. The tour will also allow free time to browse In Full Glory Reflected the new Ware of 1812 gallery. And, as usual, we will have lunch together at a local Baltimore restaurant. Proposed date for the tour is July 31 to August 3. Please check your calendar today; then contact Neal Haynie with your preference. Invite your friends! Admission fee to MdHS applies, payable on day of trip. Travel by carpool. 8 All Saints Episcopal Church 203 E. Chatsworth Ave. PO Box 279 Reisterstown, MD Phone: Fax: We re on the web: FROM GODS OLDER CHILDREN Cell Phone vs. Bible Ever wonder what would happen if we treated our Bible like we treat our cell phone? What if we carried it around in our purses or pockets? What if we flipped through it several times a day? What if we turned back to go get it if we forgot it? What if we used it to receive messages from the text? What if we treated it like we couldn t live without it? What if we gave it to Kids as gifts? What if we used it when we traveled? This is something to make you go.hmm where is my Bible? Oh, and one more thing. Unlike our cell phone, we don t have to worry about our Bible being disconnected because Jesus already paid the bill. Makes you stop and think where are my priorities? And no dropped calls! When Jesus died on the cross, he was thinking of you!
