FIRST CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH OF GLENDALE United Church of Christ 2001 Canada Boulevard Glendale, CA Phone Fax April 2011 From Rudolph s desk: Endless Possibilities Last week in the sermon I mentioned Ubuntu, the African Concept of Connectedness and Community. I was requested by some to explain this a little more. There are limited resources available and people like Bishop Desmond Tutu and Pres. Nelson Mandela did most of the work on Ubuntu. It is generally accepted that Credo Mutwa, an African Shaman, is the father of the Philosophy of Ubuntu. The word Ubuntu is from the African Nguni Languages. Here are a few loose ideas around Ubuntu: Ubuntu recognizes the interconnectedness of life; my humanity is bound up with your humanity; we all need to live our lives in ways that ensure that others may live well; our flourishing should enhance the lives of others, not detract from them; I am what I am because of who we all are; it takes a village to raise a child. Tutu writes in No Future Without Forgiveness, A person with Ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good, for s/he has a proper self-assurance that comes from knowing that s/he belongs in a greater whole and is diminished when others are humiliated or diminished, when others are tortured or oppressed. In the works of Tutu and others you will hear wrenching stories of how communities were threatened but prevailed, See Ubuntu on pg. 3

April 2011 Pilgrims Tower, First Congregational Church of Glendale 100 YEARS OF WORSHIP Page 3 Ubuntu Continued from pg 1 simply because of the strong connection felt among the members of the community. We celebrate community and connectedness in our church in a very particular and beautiful way. We are known for our hospitality and are often referred to as the friendly church in the Verdugo Woodlands. Hospitality is one of our unique features. Any church community that loses her sense of community is bound to fail. There are several examples from history that prove this. One of the dreams for our church community is that we will grow in number and add more energy to the already buzzing group of loyal and committed supporters. We should not lose sight of inviting others, visitors and new members alike, to join our community. We should constantly be asking ourselves what we are offering to visitors and new members. Why would they be coming to our church? How can we attract others? As our community grows, the face and needs of the community will change along with it. This may include demographic changes and may require acceptance and openness towards different ideas and practices. Another dream of our church community is that we gain depth in spirituality. We have just launched the Inreach Ministry. Elsewhere in this Tower you will find a short article on prayer, meditation, centering and spirituality. Soon we will be announcing our choice of the missions that we as a church would like to support. This will offer us a very real and tangible way of becoming involved in the lives of others and share with others the abundance that we are enjoying. All these and many more, are very positive developments and make these times indeed very exciting. We ask that you join us on our journey. We ask that you immerse yourself in the life and work of this church. We ask that we find connection and unity in our search for direction. We are blessed with very able leadership and a huge pool of talent at our disposal. We have wonderfully supportive and loyal members. We ask that we pray for each other! Blessings Rudolph OPEN MIC NIGHT April 30 at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 30, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. will be Open Mic night, an informal setting for people to sing, connect and get to know one another. Anyone can come up to the mic and sing, read poetry, etc. We will be in the chapel, so there will be a piano and acoustic guitar available or bring your own music. All are welcome!

Page 4 The Pilgrims Tower, First Congregational Church of Glendale 100 YEARS OF WORSHIP April, 2011 October 22, 2011, is the 200th birthday of the composer Franz Liszt. Since Gerry Keeling is a Liszt specialist, this is a busy year for her. She has previously published thirteen articles in Europe and the United States on Liszt s piano and concerts, and she and Debbie Erftenbeck have often featured the music of Liszt on their four-hand and two-piano recitals. On March 11, 2011, Gerry presented a paper on Liszt and the Étard Family: A Musical Friendship at a conference on Franz Liszt at la France held at the Cité de la musique in Paris. After two days in Paris, the conference continued for three days in Villecroze, France, and then two days in Brussels. Over forty Liszt scholars were invited to present papers. These papers will be published soon in a book of conference proceedings. On April 9th, Gerry and Debbie will be presenting an all-liszt four-hand program for the Dominant Club. Then Gerry has been invited to write an article about her involvement with Liszt for a volume titled Liszt, A Chorus of Voices, to be published by Pendragon Press in On July 4th, Gerry and another MTAC teacher will be presenting a session on Liszt for the Intermediate Piano Student at the Music Teachers of California State Convention in Oakland, CA. She will then go to Tokyo, Japan, where she will adjudicate for the Piano Teachers Music Guild and speak about Liszt. Finally, in November, Gerry will unfortunately miss FCC-Glendale s big centennial celebration because she will be presenting another Liszt paper in Budapest, Hungary. This international conference is on Liszt and the Arts, and Gerry s paper is entitled Liszt portrayed at two American pianos by two American artists. On September 25th, Debbie and Gerry will present their all Liszt four-hand program for the Trinity Concert Series at Trinity United Methodist Church in Pomona. And in October, Gerry s piano students will present an all-liszt recital on the exact date of Liszt s birthday.

April 2011 The Pilgrims Tower, First Congregational Church of Glendale 100 YEARS OF WORSHIP Page 5 As the nation plunged into the era of the Great Depression, so did First Congregational Church of Glendale. Between Janu- ary 1929 and January 1931 we lost 200 members. As of January 1, 1931, there were 599 members., of which 448 were active members. Dean Elmer T. Wortley, Chairman of the Department of Religious Education, reported as follows: total number of pupils in Church School in 1930 is 427, teachers and officers 42, Cradle Roll 22, making a total of 491 compared with 487 January 1, Annual Meeting January 8, 1930, Mr. Blake Franklin, Chairman of the Department of Missions, reported for her department stating that interest in missions should be evidenced in every department of the Church, and that missionary education is a vital part of religious education. Financial report for this department showed total collections of $54.88, disbursements of $27.00, 5 boxes of groceries and 1 box of toys also contributed during the year for use in this work. It had been found necessary during the year, Mr. Franklin, Chairman of the board of Trustees stated, to borrow from the building Fund $ to help meet interest payments on building indebtedness. The approved budget was $13,125. Annual Meeting on January 14, 1931, was opened with a prayer by the pastor, Mr. Hanson. The Cotton Blossom Singers from Mississippi gave several inspiring selections. Three hundred square feet of paving at a cost of $45.50 was added to the walk in front of the Church. Several parties were held to promote fellowship and acquaintance among the members. The sum expended by this department was $7.43. The average attendance per Sunday for Church School was 240. Annual Meeting on January, 1932,. much of the time and energy of the members of the Board are necessarily consumed in making collections of the pledges of our members and friends. All subscribers are earnestly requested to give this matter the attention it deserves. Membership of the church was 621. November 2, Women s Auxiliary plans to put on an old gold and silver drive, the proceeds to apply on the pledge to the church. The budget was decreased by $1900 through reductions in pastor s salary, secretary, music,

Page 6 The Pilgrims Tower, First Congregational Church of Glendale 100 YEARS OF WORSHIP April 2011 Religious Ed, and printing. Revised total budget: $12, The Annual Meeting January 11, 1933 reported a total of 634 members, 90 are inactive. Mr. Franklin reported for the Trustees that they had had to borrow $300 to meet the $250 note due the bank on the Building Fund Interest. Many bills were unpaid being only able to meet salaries. However, they were not discouraged as they felt a new awakening in the church spiritually and was hoping it would help financially as well. The Clerk of the Church communicated with 5 or 6 persons at Sacramento to protest against the taxation repeal of churches to try to stop the church tax increase from $600 to $ they felt a new awakening in the church spiritually... April 12, A motion was made and seconded that the people of this church take a stand on the wet and dry question of prohibition and not patronize those places who sell or dispense with intoxicating liquors. The motion was lost on a 18 to 20 standing vote. It was decided by Trustees that salaries would have to be cut by 20%. The church still owed $30,700 on the Building Loan. The budget was reduced from $10,985 in 1933 to $9424 in On December 31, 1933, 7.31 inches of rain fell during a 24 hour period. Upon reaching the basin floor the colossal debris flows buried 200 houses and rendered another 400 uninhabitable. Also buried were around 800 mostly Model A cars in Montrose, La Crescenta, and other foothill communities in the narrow La Canada Valley between the San Gabriel and Verdugo Mountains. Five people were killed at a New Year s Eve party in a Montrose home buried by debris flow; ten bodies were pulled from a debris flow in La Crescenta; and 25 men, women, and children were drowned at the Red Cross headquarters at the American Legion Hall at Montrose Boulevard and La Crescenta when a wall of water tore open the building. The Annual Meeting January 10, 1934 opened with Pastor Hanson expressing words of thanks that all our members were spared from any fatalities of the disaster of January 1 although many had suffered damages that was disheartening. Women s Auxiliary reported they had made 97 garments the past year to be given away. The Circles have felt the unusual need for helpfulness and 320 garments have been repaired for use; baskets of food and clothes have been kept on hand for distribution by the Pastor; flowers for remembrance and bouquets for the sick have been given. Mr. Franklin reported that we closed 1933 with unpaid obligations of only $ The special appeal for funds to meet deficit pledges totaled $ Salaries were paid to November 15.

April 2011 The Pilgrims Tower, First Congregational Church of Glendale 100 YEARS OF WORSHIP Page 7 Pledges still payable $7000. Pastor Hanson asked that they sing God will take care of you. The Pastor talked on various friendships made by contacts that come about thru circumstances that cause them. He spoke of the wonderful way that people of the Parish have shown their friendliness in various ways during the past year. Said he hoped that our Faith would grow for Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. He said the Youth element is wonderful and we never forget them. One passes the Youth stage and passes into a mature and splendid development. We have to live by Faith, it is something needed as we grow older and helps to deepen our lives, lived thru suffering. Wednesday, February 14, Women s Auxiliary reported that they were conducting a God and Silver Crucible campaign for several Sunday mornings to be collected at the door. December 12, 1934 November balance $198.37;. unpaid miscellaneous bills $238.13; unpaid salaries $ Rev. Hanson spoke of the National Council of Congregational Churches and what it is doing; one thing that during this unrest period the churches should be more evangelistic as when it first started; the church should OUTLIVE, OUTLOVE, and OUTSERVE the world; also if we raised our standards then we would not have to discriminate against any nationality but all treated the same; spoke of Motion Pictures as giving a great distortion of life and heartily approved the Roman Catholic Church taking the stand they did; also, said if profits were taken out of the manufacture of munitions and liquor, it would change things greatly; the church is thru with war, is the Council s attitude. Annual Meeting January 1, 1935 There are 541 members, 42 are inactive. Religious Education reported that the average attendance had dropped from 205 in 1933 to 181 in 1934 due in part to the School being closed for several Sundays during the summer on account of Infantile Paralysis. Women s Auxiliary reported that they had made up the deficit on last year s Building Fund and had paid $600 to keep the nursery in operation. Comprised of 6 Circles, each Circle has made articles of clothing, comforts, children s Dresses, sewed for welfare and children s hospital, and given baskets of food. Mr. Franklin reported December 31, 1934 ended with cash on hand of $ the church should OUTLIVE, OUTLOVE, and OUTSERVE the world; The building loan is still at $30,700. The Faith Plan was discontinued. The budget was cut again to $ The budget was accepted with the understanding that every effort be made by all departments to keep expenses at a minimum to stay within the budget. April 10, 1935 It was announced that our First Pastor,

Page 8 The Pilgrims Tower, First Congregational Church of Glendale 100 YEARS OF WORSHIP April 2011 Rev. E. H. Willisford had died. Mr. Franklin reported that payments were keeping up very well. We were also going to be paid back $ from the case of exemption of taxes. Research Committee Results Oct The Board of Deacons: We suggest the formation of a Committee on Attendance to church services and stimulate among the membership the membership regular attendance at church service. We suggest a Welcoming Committee to work in close cooperation with the ushers in making everyone feel welcome at our services. We suggest that the,mid-week services be developed realizing that these services are the heart of the church, and that the need of today is for a broader understanding and interpretation of life as unfolded in the scriptures. The Department of Missions: We recommend the publishing of a monthly bulletin of the missionary activities, what funds raised and how expended in order to around greater interest among the church membership. We would further recommend that definite Mission projects be sought from the Missionary Society so that a distinct objective be given to the Mission work of the Church and Sunday School. Department of Business: Respectfully suggest that the question of stewardship be brought to the attention of the church membership and would recommend a committee be formed to formulate plans to this end. Annual Meeting January 1936 The Budget for 1936 is cut again and approved at $8520. Centennial T-Shirts Coming Soon. Look for information in the bulletins and next month s Pilgrims Tower

April 2011 The Pilgrims Tower, First Congregational Church of Glendale 100 YEARS OF WORSHIP Page 11 RECYCLING IS A GOOD THING TO DO FOR THE CHURCH AND FOR THE EARTH In the first quarter of 2011, Jan Drugan, our recycling maven, has donated over $145 to the church from recyclables. This totals over $500 a year from items you are disposing of anyhow. Bring them with you to church on Sundays and leave them in the container in Fellowship Hall or in the first trash bin. YOUR RECYCLE MAVEN SPEAKS: New rules or think before you toss. All given to me has to be sorted into proper categories, I handle every piece you donate. So please refrain from adding chewed gum, cigarette ash and butts. If there is liquid left in anything empty it. Also, do not pack anything in paper bags. It tears/splits when wet and then I have an even bigger mess to clean up. Remember, if it s heavy for you, it s heavy for me. Thanks for your help BUT by following these rules, you can help me too. YES LIST ALUMINUM BEVERAGE CANS (much more money in beverage cans) NO. 1 PLASTIC AND GLASS NO. 2 PLASTIC AND GLASS NO LIST NO SOUP, BEAN AND FRUIT CANS NO ENSURE AND YOGURT CONTAINERS NO PLASTIC CUPS AND STRAWS NO NEWSPAPERS Thank you for your donations. Keep them coming. Jan Drugan NO GUM OR PAPER BAGS, PLEASE. THANK YOU SO MUCH, BOB HOWELL for ridding us of our unwanted and uninvited yard guests who had turned the church lawn into quite a network of under ground routes, hills and valleys to and from every section. After many weeks, Bob was finally able to rid us of the pests (or sent them packing to someone else s yard) and we are sincerely grateful.

Page 12 The Pilgrims Tower, First Congregational Church of Glendale 100 YEARS OF WORSHIP April 2011 What does centering mean? Is the Christian concept of prayer not sufficient? Did Jesus not teach us how to pray? What other ways of prayer and praying are there? The Wikipedia page on prayer offers a worthwhile reading on the topic. Perhaps one could say that the word typically used in the Christian context and worship liturgy is prayer. Other words like meditation, centering and spiritual formation are used interchangeably. If prayer is usually filled with gratitude and a solicitation for help, support or courage meditation may be a little more the notion of letting go, emptying, becoming present with one s inner self, and becoming part of all that is. Some people may have vision-like experiences, seeing light or various imageries or just experiencing a sense of calmness. Continued on next page SHARING OUR FELLOW- SHIP THROUGH REMEMBERANCES We all have memories of First Congregational Church: weddings, dinners, meetings, laughter and tears. Help us create a Book of Special Moments to share during our Centennial year.

April 2011 The Pilgrims Tower, First Congregational Church of Glendale 100 YEARS OF WORSHIP Page 13 ON CENTERING What may be of importance is that we find a time during the day to practice prayer/ meditation on a regular basis. What may be important is that we find a time of stillness, where we eliminate our worries and daily concerns and spend time sitting, waiting, hearing. In our communal worship service there is always a time for prayer. There is typically the pastoral prayer, often a time for silent prayer, and sometimes soothing music or candles as a vehicle to convey our thoughts in prayer. Beyond our own Christian experience all world religions have various ways of expressing spirituality through prayer. Rudolph Message from your Moderator Well this first three months have been an adjustment for everyone. After having Linda Conover as Moderator for 4 years, it is hard to remember that I am now the Moderator. I have to thank all of the board chairs for keeping me in the loop as to what is going on within the church. I was pleased to have the opportunity of surprising Rudolph on March 13 th with a special treat at coffee hour to celebrate his first Anniversary as our minister. It is hard to believe that one-year has already past! I would like to ask everyone to make an effort to be at church on April 10 th. We will be having a Congregational Church meeting right after services. We would like to review our budget for this year and how the first quarter has gone. Also, our Outreach Board has been working very hard to decide which charities our church is going to support with a financial donation from the monies left by Ethel and Bob Hersh. They will be presenting to the congregation their decisions on April 10 th as well. Hope to see everyone at church, Laurel Pavone WOMEN S SPIRITUALITY GROUP meet on Fridays at 8:15 a.m. The new reading is a play, God s Man in Texas by David Rambo. Everyone is welcome to attend.
