1 I AM Lesson #2 God is a Good Dad The purpose of this lesson plan is to: Create a fun and interactive learning experience Provide teaching options in addition to the Leader Q Card Creatively revisit the Bible story featured in the teaching video Give kids an opportunity to further explore the application point PROGRAM Activity Length of Segment Running Time Q Card: Discussion 15 minutes Start-15 minutes Picture: Bible Story 5 minutes minutes Play: Learning Activity 10 minutes minutes Plan: Group Commitment 5 minutes minutes Prayer: Prayer Cards 5 minutes minutes PREP You will need: Paper and pencils Game prizes (optional) Prayer Cards (1 per kid) MAP Books (1 per kid) PICTURE (The Bible Verses) In this portion of your class time you have the opportunity to retell the Bible Story presented earlier in the teaching video. The object is to paint a picture that kids will understand and remember. Remember you are painting a picture for your viewers. Have fun and explore your creativity. Here are some ideas to make your storytelling more memorable: You might ask the kids to play the characters in the story: Father, Prodigal Son, Older Son, servants Maybe you could use props like: bags of money, pig food, robe, ring, sandals, balloons, streamers, treats to hand out, other party supplies The Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-24) To illustrate the point further, Jesus told them this story: "A man had two sons. The younger son told his father, I want my share of your estate now, instead of
2 waiting until you die. So his father agreed to divide his wealth between his sons. "A few days later this younger son packed all his belongings and took a trip to a distant land, and there he wasted all his money on wild living. About the time his money ran out, a great famine swept over the land, and he began to starve. He persuaded a local farmer to hire him to feed his pigs. The boy became so hungry that even the pods he was feeding the pigs looked good to him. But no one gave him anything. "When he finally came to his senses, he said to himself, At home even the hired men have food enough to spare, and here I am, dying of hunger! I will go home to my father and say, "Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son. Please take me on as a hired man. "So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long distance away, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him. His son said to him, Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son. "But his father said to the servants, Quick! Bring the finest robe in the house and put it on him. Get a ring for his finger, and sandals for his feet. And kill the calf we have been fattening in the pen. We must celebrate with a feast, for this son of mine was dead and has now returned to life. He was lost, but now he is found. So the party began. PLAY (Learning Activity) In this portion of your class time you will lead your class in a fun and exciting activity that will help your kids apply the Bible lesson to their everyday lives. What s Dad Backwards? HOW TO START: Divide kids into teams Hand out paper and pencils to all players HOW TO PLAY: Say, God is such a good dad because of who He is. This game is called What s Dad Backwards? This game will help us to remember what God is like. Who knows what Dad is backwards? Right, Dad. Now in this game I will be giving you a sentence, but one of the words will be backwards. Your team will try to figure out what the word is. Begin round #1 One player from each team plays in round #1 Read the first sentence AS WRITTEN (see below) First player to raise his/her hand will try to correctly say the word that was read backwards 2
3 First player to successfully answer the correct word earns 10 points for his/her team Repeat all steps for 7 more rounds The team with the most point wins PLAY OPTIONS: Hand out game prizes to all players (optional) For younger kids: Play together as a group. Write the words backwards and then let the kids help you write them the correct way Bonus Round: At the end of the game, ask kids to write down all the words that were used to describe God in the game. The player with the most correct answers earns 10 points for his/her team Additional Rounds: Kids say their own backwards words to describe God. The kids then read their words one at a time while the others figure them out. GAME SENTENCES: Round #1: God is my rehtaf Round #2: God, my dad, is gnivol Round #3: God, my dad, is always esolc to me Round #4: God, my dad, is my rotaerc Round #5: God, my dad, is gnorts Round #6: God, my dad, is in lortnoc Round #7: God, my dad, is lufhtiaf Round #8: God, my dad, is gnirac PLAN (Group Commitment) In this portion of your class time you have the opportunity to lead your group to make a commitment. You may select any ONE of the options provided or your group may create its own. Encourage the kids to write their commitments on their Prayer Cards so you can be praying for them during the week. Commitment Options: Make a poster. Write all the words you can think of to describe God. Draw pictures to go with your words. Hang your poster up in your house. Take a few minutes each morning this week to pray. Thank God for being your Daddy and talk to him about everything that is going on in your life. Plan a Prodigal Son party. Read the story of the Prodigal Son. Celebrate how much God, your Daddy, is always loving and forgiving of you! PRAYER In this portion of your class time, have your kids fill out the Prayer Card. Take the cards home and pray for your kids throughout the week. End your time together by praying for your group commitment. 3
