Minutes of the Executive Board Meeting January 28 th, ) Those in attendance: Jackson Bowman, Dennis Culbreth, Mickey Bane, Frank Ogle, Gerald Lawson, Karen Robinson, Alan Johnston, Ernie Burfitt, Denise Craig, Jane Everett, Brady Wood, William Jacques, Gary Jared, Steve Roper, Seton Tomyn, Ken Clark, Becky Scearce, Macil Duncan, Kenneth Ware, Elton Lamar Young. 2) Moderator Ken Clark called the meeting to order, welcomed everyone, asked everyone to make sure they signed in, and prayed 3) Ken Clark then called on Seton Tomyn to present the day s devotion: 4) Seton Tomyn, pastor of First Baptist Soddy Daisy, presented devotion on Joseph, which was centered on where we find our identity and how we get too busy to be kind. 5) Ken Clark then asked everyone to look over the minutes of the previous Executive Board Meeting in December of last year to review to see if any revisions need to be made. No revisions were made so they were approved as written. 6) Ken then asked Dennis Culbreth to come make a presentation to us. 7) Dennis Culbreth came to present a summary on what we know so far about REACH Chattanooga, and to present Mickey Bane as the Coordinator of all things involving REACH Chattanooga for the next three years. For years Mickey pastored East Brainerd Baptist Church, now pastors Middle Valley Baptist Church, and he also works for SCORE. Dennis then invited Denise Craig to come make the recommendation to accept Mickey Bane in this position, per review of Mickey and contracts with the Personnel Committee. 8) Denise Craig expressed how the personnel committee came to the conclusion that Mickey Bane Is the most qualified person for this position, because of not only his experience, but also his heart for missions and reaching people with the Gospel. 9) Dennis then explained more about how the funding for this initiative comes from the churches and the TBMB. This position will be $15 per hour at a max of 20 hours a week. Dennis invited Mickey to give his testimony on how God called him to this position. 10) Mickey came to talk about how humbling this call was for him, because of how much in ministry he has gone through with his family. He gave his testimony of how God called him to salvation and to missions. Since 1991, he has served as a Senior Pastor, missionary, and in all kinds of ministry work, as well as help non-profits get off the ground. His heart was broken for Chattanooga not too long ago, so the call for this position was great, because now he can help our churches that are doing so much do even more. He planned to spend some time overseas, the door was closed. He and his family travelled around the country helping churches do what they do in church planting and church revitalization work. This was done through a lot of research of people groups not being reached in the area. His family s heart is to see people come to Christ and to help the local church do it. 11) Dennis turned the floor over to Ken Clark, who asked if there was a second for this recommendation to bring on Mickey and asked if there are any questions. He asked for those who approve to say amen. This motion was passed unanimously, and Mickey bane is now the officially City Reach Coordinator for the Hamilton County Baptist Association. 12) Ken then asked Dennis to give his executive report. 13) Dennis asked for Linda to come and be honored for her 20 years of faithful service in the Association, and he also presented Colleen Middleton as the new Administration Assistant who will be taking her place when she retires at the end of the week. Dennis continued to explain how REACH Chattanooga is all about church planting, revitalization, and reaching unreached people groups in Chattanooga. 14) Ken Clark asked everyone to look over the WMU report enclosed within the executive board booklet, because Tina Williams is not present. 15) Alan Johnston gave a little insight into how important WMU is based on his time in Birmingham spent at the WMU headquarters. 4 H a m i l t o n C o u n t y B a p t i s t A s s o c i a t i o n

16) Ken Clark then asked Steve Roper to present his BCM executive report. 17) Steve said everything is moving forward strongly with plans for this semester. Upcoming is the normal life group times and church services, but at the end of the semester, there is a plan in place to partner with SCORE to go on a trip to do some very similar Disaster Relief stuff to what they did last year. One thing that has impressed Steve about students over the past couple of years is how packed they make their lives. He notices that a lot of college students leave the church are leaving the church because they feel unconnected after leaving the youth ministry. We need to find ways for these students to connect quickly with people in the church in order to make sure they don t continue to run away from it. 18) Ken Clark then called Jane Everett to present her report on the CWJC. 19) Jane expressed how this time of year is usually difficult in recruiting new people. Gerald Lawson is putting flyers for CWJC in his food boxes, and these flyers are available to give to everyone attending. Everywhere we look, we can find women who have lost their way and do not know how to continue in life and need someone to redirect them. That s what this ministry is all about. In December, CWJC graduated 4 members, but there were others who started the program and got jobs quickly that conflicted with the program. Soon there will be a parenting class for women at Silverdale. Tina Williams husband has done a great job at getting these women connected to jobs. If your church s women s group would like to get involved, have them contact Jane. If they are spiritually mature and can listen well, that s who she needs as mentors. Training is required. This program is meant to be fun, and it gets these women who have been through the ringer in a good relational position that will help them get on the right track. They meet Monday nights at First Baptist downtown. They had professions of faith recently too. 20) Ken then asked Gerald Lawson to give his HaCoBA executive report. 21) Gerald commended Steve Roper for what he said earlier. Gerald brought up how much they needs big cans of corn and green beans, and this is a request for churches to possibly pray for giving donations of these. Gerald has had a hard time getting it through donations and has had to buy it commercially - that gets expensive. If churches want to give these in donations, Gerald will happily come pick them up. He also expressed a need for a retired nurse that can come volunteer on Thursdays, so if the churches know anyone, please give the recommendation. 22) Ken Clark then asked Alan Johnston to give the executive financial report. 23) Alan Johnston commended Steve for his words about how to keep college age people in the church. Alan talked about how giving has been good, there is no red ink anywhere, and we are doing financially well - blessed because of what God has done for us, and how well the churches have done supporting us. 24) Ken presented Jackson to give his executive report. 25) Jackson presented how last month the Annual Tax seminar was well attended by Pastors and financial assistants the purpose of this event is for year-end tax organization for churches. Then, he presented how the Hullander scholarship funds have now been disclosed to the Association, and all the churches have been given information to pass on to anyone who plans to attend seminary in the Fall. Then, he presented the recent success of the Samford University Certificate classes this most recent course has 20 people in attendance. Finally, he gave regretfully informed that the Silverdale ESL program will be taking this semester off, for various reasons, but the good news was that Hixson First Baptist will be starting their ESL program for the first time very soon. Many of their volunteers, as well as volunteer from various other churches, recently went through a two week certification process for teaching ESL at the Associational offices. 13 were certified. 26) Ken asked for old and new business. Jane expressed the Dogwood lodge is good for deacons retreats or things like that to be there. 27) Ken asked for prayer requests. Steve granger s mother-in-law passed away. Steve Highlander had a relative pass away. Steve Roper lifted up his father-in-law going through health issues. Linda s husband will going through surgery soon. 28) Ken prayed and closed the meeting. 5 H a m i l t o n C o u n t y B a p t i s t A s s o c i a t i o n

We have had a busy but productive winter here at Hamilton County Baptist Association. Things are just beginning to gear up for the 2020 launch of Reach Chattanooga and Mickey Bane has hit the ground running. Over the next few months expect to hear more about this exciting opportunity for Hamilton County. We are glad to have Colleen Middleton serving as our receptionist here at HCBA. She replaced Linda Mauritzen who served over twenty years in that position. Please welcome Colleen! Mickey, Jackson, and I have just returned from a Church Replant Conference at the North American Mission Board in Alpharetta, Georgia. This conference was for Director of Missions from across the country to receive further training for Church Revitalization. It was an outstanding conference and we left with some new information and skills to assist our churches in need of this ministry. Please make plans to attend the Seminar on Reducing the Risk of Sexual Abuse in the Local Church on April 1 at 6:30PM at the associational office. I would encourage all churches to attend and bring their leadership. I thank the Lord for you all. Please know that you are constantly in my prayers. In His Service, Dennis Culbreth 6 H a m i l t o n C o u n t y B a p t i s t A s s o c i a t i o n

HULLANDER SCHOLARSHIP A few months ago, we received information on our annual J.C. & Grace Hullander Scholarship. This scholarship is designated for those who are attending seminary and plan to go into fulltime ministry. All of the churches have been informed of the scholarship and know to inform anyone in their churches who may be able to use it. Six people have already expressed interest. As we continue to inform people and the candidates for this scholarship send in their application, we will continue to inform the executive board with updates. SAMFORD UNIVERSITY - MINISTRY TRAINING INSITUTE We have just finished our Biblical Foundations I course with all 18 students making it through the class while having to go through difficult subjects like providence, the Fall, and the Trinity. On the 26 th, we will be starting our second part of Biblical Foundations, tackling subjects like common grace, election, and the return of Christ. Promotion is going strong, and it looks like everyone in the previous course will take this one. We love to be able to serve lay leaders and ministers together with this college-level education in the small group format it is on. ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE After visiting every ESL program in the association at least once since January, I am overall pleased with the growth of each ministry and the faithfulness of the volunteers. There are a couple of programs that are struggling and one that is still in the process of starting their ministry. To help with this, I am in the process of doing demographic research for each church involved in ESL to help them know what prime foreign people groups are around them and how they can market to them. The goal in these reports and consulting with these ministries is not to grow their numbers the goal is to reach as many people in need as possible. We can meet some real physical needs in this ministry, and doing this can always lead to meeting spiritual needs. That is our goal. 10 REACH CHATTANOOGA INITIATIVE City Reach Chattanooga is a combined effort between the Hamilton County Baptist Association and the Tennessee Baptist Mission Board to plan, coordinate, mobilize and implement church planting among ethnic people groups in and around Hamilton County, TN, while also providing church revitalization support for HCBA churches and church prospects. Part of the implementation of church planting and revitalization will involve the mobilization of short-term mission teams to assist with things like community evangelism, beautification projects, widows' ministry, children's ministry, homeless ministry, neighborhood outreach canvassing, and prayer walking on behalf of our local churches and church revitalization ministries. Currently, we are in the process of: Gathering together appropriate information specific to the City Reach initiative for Chattanooga so that marketing and promotional materials can be printed by the TBMB and begin distribution. Meeting with area pastors for the planning of ministry projects, housing and food for mission teams, and praying for both the mission teams and the churches who will assist and be assisted by the teams. Beginning strategy meetings with HCBA pastors for laying the foundation to begin coordinating the church planting among the ethnic groups in and around Chattanooga. Collecting work and ministry projects lists submitted by HCBA churches. Collecting short-term mission team applications. If you would like to submit a request for mission team assistance with your ministry, please go to and click on the City Reach "for more information" button. At the bottom of the page will be a form to complete and submit online - or, call me at (423) Respectfully Submitted, Mickey Bane -HCBA / Reach Chattanooga 10 H a m i l t o n C o u n t y B a p t i s t A s s o c i a t i o n

HaCoBa Care Ministries If you have ever wondered why HaCoBACare exist, ask one of our volunteers. Seeing a life changed when a client receives Jesus as their Lord and Savior. To see tears flow when client sees a food box and ask is that all for me. To see a child smile with a toy from the toy box. Knowing that just by being there to listen to someone that has lost everything and feel that they have lost all hope. These are some of the reasons that HaCoBACare exist and the volunteers come to work every week. HaCoBACare could not exist without many groups and individuals that make the above possible. Thank you to all who contribute money, food, and time. A special shout out to Baptist Collegiate Ministries for their Boy \ Girl contest and to One Accord Awana for 1,000 bars of soap. Thanks you to local business that contribute, Sara Lee, Publix, Wal-Mart and Food City. This is why HaCoBACare exist, to see a life changed. 12 Baptist Collegiate Ministries The UTC BCM is all about helping UTC students better understand what it means to follow the way of Jesus. While the University is working to help them grow their intellect, we want to invest in helping them grow spiritually and emotionally. It is our hope to help them realize the potential for leadership that God has placed in them. We want to walk alongside as students explore how to live in such a way that your life will impact our world for the sake of Christ. We believe that God has placed students here at UTC for a purpose! Whether you ve been in church all your life or never even walked in the door of a church, there is a place at the BCM. This is the goal of our staff. It doesn t matter if you are a first-year freshman or a fifth-year senior; we want to help you succeed in college and in life. There are a lot of important decisions to be made during college. Sometimes they are about spiritual matters but at other times, they may have to do with majors/career choices, relationships, roommate conflicts, family issues and time management...or keeping all of those demands in balance. We are so excited that you found us! The UT-Chattanooga Baptist Collegiate Ministry is all about helping UTC students become followers of Jesus Christ. Growing disciples who grow disciples is at the core of what we are about. We want you to become a follower of Jesus and not just a fan. That is how you experience the abundant life that comes from knowing Christ, walking in relationship with Him, and being with people who also love Him. Whether you ve been in church all your life or never even walked in the door of a church, please come discover with us what this life is all about. YOU DON T HAVE TO BE BAPTIST, YOU DON T HAVE TO BE RELIGIOUS, AND YOU DON T HAVE TO HAVE IT ALL TOGETHER. Just come and join us in the journey. Sincerely, Steve Roper Baptist Campus Minister 12 H a m i l t o n C o u n t y B a p t i s t A s s o c i a t i o n

Disaster Relief About ten volunteers from Hamilton County took the Train the Trainer classes from January 31 to February 2, These classes qualify the instructors to teach various Disaster Relief classes. Participants were from Concord, Brainerd Hills, Red Bank, and Ridgedale Baptist churches. Disaster Relief response is ongoing from the flooding that occurred across Tennessee in late February. So far volunteers from Brainerd Hills, Concord, Mt. Carmel, Red Bank, Ridgedale, and Woodland Park have responded in Harrison, Knoxville, and Spring City. Students from Bryan College have also assisted with the flood recovery efforts. Doyle Pittman HCBA DR Coordinator 13 H a m i l t o n C o u n t y B a p t i s t A s s o c i a t i o n

WMU HCBA WMU met on February 2, 2019 with eleven officers present. We discussed ways in which we would continue in our efforts to build community within our communities. Officers present brought food and monetary gifts for HaCoba, then delivered. Our ladies are so caring and giving. We began our meeting in a time of prayer for our missionaries and had a short devotional by sister Rita Waller. Final discussions and invitations were given for the Loved Beyond Measure Conference to be held at Brainerd Baptist BX. The event was well attended. Our topic was finding value in Christ (with a focus on suicide prevention). We have had many comments and conversations to start because of the conference. The conference was a beautiful picture of the work of the Hamilton County Baptist Association partner churches coming together with purpose and passion. Brainerd Baptist, Jackson Bowman, UTC BCM, and several associational churches worked in tandem to make this happen! What a beautiful example of what the body of Christ should look like! Our attention then turned to planning upcoming events, particularly the WMU Annual Meeting. We plan to shift our focus to at this years meeting. We will have two projects for participants to support. One will be local in the support of canned goods (protein packed items) for HaCoba. Barrels of food will be gathered, and Gerald will need your help getting them back to HaCoba. The other will be the purchase of bricks for the Walk of Faith Memorial at National WMU headquarters. Our bricks will be purchased in honor of Hamilton County WMU past presidents and local missions heroes. We adjourned with the commitment to prayer for the many positions that still need to be filled. Upcoming efforts/next Steps: Month of April Week of Prayer Annie Armstrong Easter Offering Missions Gathering and Connection, Gatlinburg, TN April 5th-7th, 2019 Month of May Hamilton County WMU Annual Meeting May 6th, 2019 Crosspath Baptist Church Associational WMU Outreach NHC Healthcare- May 19th 2:30-3:30 Please continue to pray for us as we seek to involve others and coach toward a missional lifestyle. We will be electing new officers at the annual meeting and there are multiple vacancies. Our team is doing a great job but with a full team we could accomplish so much more. 15 Christian Women s Job Corp We began a new semester in February and now have six women enrolled. This is a very promising group with one homeless woman already employed. We have also completed a parenting class at Silverdale with 10 women enrolled. Our goal is to transition at least some of those women into our CWJC program in the fall semester. Ultimately, it would be ideal to partner with their Re-entry Program and have them become a satellite of our site. That s future planning. We have also trained three new mentors and gotten previous mentors back on duty. We continue to be blessed by the wonderful churches who provide meals. We are now providing to-go boxes for participants to take home leftovers. We continue to refer to HOCOBA as a valuable resource for our women. We want churches and other agencies to know that our clothes closet is available for women who need appropriate outfits for work and/or interviews. Our hope is that churches with women s groups will invite us to present to their groups the program of Christian Women s Job Corps. This is such an opportunity for ministry and service and God moves in these lives to make a difference. Thank you for your prayers and continued support.
