2 Carlos Houston Memorial Toy Drive The month of December is a celebrated month for the Brothers of Chi Phi due to the annual participation of the Carlos Houston Memorial Toy Drive. The Annual Toy Drive was held on Thursday, December 18, 2014 at The Edna Oliver Child Development Center. The Center is located at 2851 Tremont Place, Denver, Colorado Brothers of Chi Phi fellowshipped with the Parents, Staff, children and our partners at the Denver Sheriff's department. During this time Christmas carols were sang with the children and Santa Que made his yearly appearance. 3 Chi Phi Founders Day (87 years of service) The history of Chi Phi Chapter, located in Denver, Colorado, the Queen City of the Plains, dates back to the year During this time there were several detached members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity residing in Denver. The members were Dr. Clarence F. Holmes, who was at the time the District Representative of the Eighth District; Fritz Cansler of Pi Omega Chapter of Baltimore, Maryland; Archie McKinney of Theta Chapter, Wiley College, Marshall, Texas; and Bazella G. Rainey of Psi Chapter, Morehouse College, Atlanta, Georgia. As a result of a series of meetings and the approval of the Supreme Council, permission was given to establish a chapter in Denver, Colorado. 4 brook, Dr. T.T. McKinney, Thomas Campbell, Esq., Frank Brickler, Preston Wooten, and Dudley B. Luck became members of the fraternity in the new chapter known as Chi Phi. From the beginning, down through the years to the present time, Chi Phi chapter has played an important part in many types of activities in Denver. Its members have exemplified the four cardinal principles of Scholarship, Manhood, Perseverance, and Uplift as they have gone about their different ways in contributing to the growth of the city. It would be difficult to attempt to list the many achievements of the men who have been and who presently are members of this chapter. January 8, 1922: Brother, Colonel Charles E. Young, entered Omega Chapter. January 8, 1975: Brother, Honorable Garland W. Watt, 1 st African-American Circuit Court Judge State of Illinois. January 12, 1986: Brother, Brigadier General Charles F. Bolden, Jr., 1 st mission in space. January 14, 1919: Brother Campbell C. Johnson, 18 th Grand Basileus, organizes SOTC Unit at Howard University. January 14, 1963: Brother William O. Walker, 1 st African-American State of Ohio cabinet member. January 20, 1977: Brother Stanley M. Douglas, 1 st Editor of the Oracle, entered Omega Chapter. January 22, 1964: Brother Carl Thomas Rowan, named Director of the U.S. Information Agency. January 23, 1968: Mrs. Charlotte Wilson, Sister Lottie Wilson, entered Omega Chapter. January 28, 1986: Brother, Dr. Ronald E. McNair, Astronaut & Physicist, entered Omega Chapter. January 31, 1923: 1 st issue of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Bulletin (Chapter Edition) published. GENTLEMAN A Gentleman is person who is clean inside and outside... Who neither looks up to the rich nor down on the poor... A Gentleman is a person who can lose without squealing, and who can win without bragging... A Gentleman is a person who is considerate to women, children and old people, who is too brave to lie, too generous to cheat and too sensible A Gentleman is a person who takes his share of the world s goods and let other people take theirs. 7 Man s All Ecclesiastes 12:13 Ecclesiastes 12:13 (NKJV) Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, For this is man s all. As the year comes to an end, we begin to take stock of all that has happened throughout the year. We evaluate our plans at the beginning of the year and check all that was achieved, those that were not and those we didn t even get to attempt at all. From this point, we start to plan and look forward to the New Year. This is where I want to interject. Let us begin by asking the question, why plan for the future when you don t know if you ll wake up tomorrow morning or if you ll make it to the end of this present day? Proverbs 16:9 (NKJV) A man s heart plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps. As you make your plans and solidify your new year s resolutions, where is God in these plans? Does God have a prominent role in these plans? We can plan our ways (and we should), but it is the LORD who directs our steps and brings them to fruition. Another encouraging scripture is Psalm 37:4 (NKJV) Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart. These plans that we are putting together are birth out of our desires and we strive to achieve them. The accomplishment of these desires will solidify a successful year when we look back at the end of 2015 and evaluate the year. So it only makes sense that we invite God into this planning process as the success of the plan depends entirely on. (Continued on page 8) Chi Phi Speaks 7 Chiphiques.com

8 Him. Some suggestions on including God into your plans: For those who may have strayed away from God in this past year, months, weeks or days, begin your plan by recommitting yourself back to God. Commit to constant and regular fellowship with fellow Christians by joining a bible believing, bible teaching church which is devoid of religion and archaic traditions that burdens people. Plan on a steady reading plan of the scriptures daily. And of course, nothing can be accomplished with prayer. Commit to praying always and at all times. Maintain a close fellowship with God. When we put God first in all that we do, God will take care of those things that matter to us. Matthew 6:33 (NKJV) But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. God bless you all, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Bro.
