2 2 THE Washington ODDFELLOW SEPTEMBER, 2017 From the desk of your Grand Master GRAND MASTER - WHAT AN HONOR! Greetings Brothers and Sisters. I want to extend my gratitude for the faith that you have shown in me by electing me your Grand Master. When I joined the Order some 20 odd years ago, I never would have dreamed that I would attain this honor. I know that the Brothers who originally initiated me are looking down with smiles and pride. I am the first Grand Master from Skookumchuck Lodge. Also, Skookumchuck Lodge is celebrating its 125th anniversary this November. We have plenty reason to celebrate. KELLY HUGHES LOOKING BACK I think back to when I joined our Order as an 18-yearold in a room with the next youngest member being in his late 60s. Why would a young man want to hang out with these old guys? It was simple I couldn t stand losing the history. Also, I could see the good the lodge did in times past. I knew that the lodge was still needed. I remember the pride I felt and the awe to experience the Degree work. This was back in the day when the Ritual was not used during the floor work the Brothers had their parts memorized. There was a deep-set pride of what the Order was, and men wanted to put forth their best efforts. AMODERN MINDSET Times have changed, however we have not. In order to resist going the way of the Dodo bird, we must evolve. And while we should preserve those traditions that are our history, the ritualistic portions, we need to embrace a modern mindset. I want to express my deep concern over the state of our Order as it now sits. Remembering the good old days isn t good enough. In 1995, we had 74 lodges in Washington. As of this writing we are at, I believe, 32, and we will probably have two consolidations this year. Looking back at the membership reports for we have shown a net loss of 92 members. We lose nearly 31 more members than we initiate each year. This must stop. We need to remember and share why we joined the Order, the pride we felt when we could say I Am An Odd Fellow! ACHALLENGE TO YOU I challenge each and every member in the Order, this goes out to Odd Fellows and those Rebekahs reading this. Go out and get your heir in place the person that will take over your spot then get a spare. Two members should not be that hard to get. Have you asked your barber or hair dresser? What about your neighbor, son or daughter, your grandchildren? Look for the people who are in their 40s. Most of them are empty nest parents who are lost without having to taxi kids to soccer, ballet, and piano lessons. If you have got your two, go get two more. If each Odd Fellow got two members, do you realize that we would have close to 2,500 Odd Fellows? It is a goal that is easily obtainable. SGL SESSIONS IN ST. LOUIS I sit typing this on a very warm August evening. Soon I will be packing my bags and heading off to St. Louis to attend the Sovereign Grand Lodge Sessions. This year s Sessions will be shortened to only four days, so it will be quite a busy time to complete all the necessary work. Once I get home, I will start contacting lodges to schedule my visitations. ALL BRANCH RECEPTION The All Branch Reception is set for Saturday, September 23 in Bucoda. We are having a sit down served luncheon. Please RSV. to: ioofwabanquet@gmail.com. We need to have a count so we can polish enough silverware, though I suppose you could eat with your fingers. Until next month in Friendship, Love and Truth, Kelly Hughes, Your Grand Master District #3 will meet The District Association #3 Meeting will be held on Saturday, October 21. The meeting will open at 10 a.m. at the South Tacoma Odd Fellows Hall located at 5424 South Puget Sound in Tacoma. Please come dressed comfortably as we ll be doing a Lunch and Learn session, along with working. Don t forget to bring your Charge Books, Digest, etc. We ll also be doing something a little different. But you have to attend to find out. For more information, please contact Secretary Laurel Delony at laurejdelony@gmail.com or (253) Lunch is pot luck,so bring your favorites. There is a 50 cent charge for the program.

3 SUMMER SESSIONS Brothers and Sisters, As I write this month s article, several Grand Lodge Officers were just returning from the Sovereign Grand Lodge Sessions held in St. Louis, Missouri in late August. Washington s Grand Lodge Sessions in Yakima were productive and harmonious again this year. We welcomed Brother Douglas E. Pittman, Grand Warden of the Sovereign Grand Lodge. He hails from the Jurisdiction of Colorado. Brother Pittman was our Jurisdiction s Representative from the Sovereign Grand Lodge. LOTS OF LAUGHS AT OUR PICNIC The Narcissa Rebekahs held their Annual Picnic in the Courtyard at the Washington Odd Fellows Home on June 20. Eighteen members from three lodges attended, including Bee Hive #70 and Schuyler #18. SEPTEMBER, 2017 THE Washington ODDFELLOW 3 From the desk of your Grand Secretary HARRY W. BILL COULTER GROUP IRS RETURNS The Sovereign Grand Lodge is compiling the information for the Group tax returns. I will keep you informed on the progress. LODGES Lodge Per Capita invoices are being sent out to the lodges this month. Please review and send back one copy with your check. The copy stamped File in red is for your files. NEWSPAPER ALITTLE LATE As I mentioned earlier, several of our Grand Lodge Officers attended the Sovereign Grand Lodge Sessions. We stretched the deadline for some of their letters. I hope all of you had an enjoyable summer season. Now it is time for you to return to our lodge halls to carry on the work of our Order. Fraternally, Harry W. Bill Coulter, PGM, Grand Secretary Narcissa Rebekah Lodge #2 in Walla Walla Barb Lechner provided fried chicken from Super 1 and others brought a variety of salads and condiments. Nancy Klicker generously served strawberry shortcake and homemade biscuits for dessert. Those attending were Gloria Zinn, Neita Stearns, Cora May Davis, Jeanne Elder, Karen Schultz, Barbara and Ted Tvrz, Pauline Winters, Sharon Sousa, Marthann Hall, Robertta Hunt, Lula Belle Washington, Rose Ringhoffer, Jeanine Griffin, and Shirley Ruble. Door prizes were distributed, and Robertta Hunt entertained the group with jokes that made everyone happy they were not the subject of the stories. In F., L. & T., Shirley Ruble, Reporter Robertta Hunt provided funny stories at Narcissa s Annual June Picnic that kept everyone laughing at her collection of unconventional senior citizens. ~ In Memoriam ~ Mary Francis Peterson, 50+ year member, 97 years old, Monterose Rebekah Lodge #46, Toledo. 4 4 THE Washington ODDFELLOW SEPTEMBER, 2017 From the desk of the Assembly President I M PROUD & EXCITED Welcome back from summer break! I am so proud and excited to have been installed as your President for the year. At the time I am writing this article, I am also getting ready for the IARA Sessions in St. Louis, Missouri. As your Representative, I am looking forward to bringing back information and hopefully input from other Representatives to encourage new membership. As lodges struggle to maintain enough active members to hold regular meeting, our future depends on bringing in younger members who are enthusiastic about living out the principles of Odd Fellowship CATHY GARCIA in our communities. PLEASE SPONSOR AT LEAST ONE NEW MEMBER At our Grand Sessions this past June in Yakima, I challenged each of your Representatives to return to lodge in September with a completed membership application. I truly hope that each one of us will plan on sponsoring one new member into our lodge this coming year. What a difference that would make. AVERY BUSY SUMMER I hope everyone s had a good summer! After my adventure in Hawaii, a week later after getting home I went to my Senior High church camp at Remote, Oregon. After making more memories there for a week meeting new people and reuniting with old friends, I went home for another week. During my week home I passed the written part of my driver s license test. I am counting down days for my driving test appointment. Then I went with my family to our traditional camping trip together that I have always loved! After about two weeks there I went back home and started packing for Youth days in Saint Louis, Missouri!!! This year seven girls from Eta are going on this trip, and its going to be a blast. I m so excited to see what this year will bring. I am also starting volleyball up with daily doubles, before school starts. It feels like the summer flew by! VISITATIONS You should be hearing from me soon regarding a visitation scheduled. As I look forward to seeing each of you at your individual lodges, my husband is hunting for new golf courses around the state. MY EMBLEM IS THE FROG My emblem, the frog, has been a fun creature that I have enjoyed since childhood. As a young adult I heard the acronym Fully Rely on God. Each time I look at a frog, I am reminded not to get caught up in what I can do in my own strength, but depend on the source of my strength. I hope that as Rebekahs we will use this, as well to be Faithful Rebekahs Offering Grace to each other, as well as to all who come into our lives. If we truly live the principles taught by the women portrayed in our Degree work, those around us will want to be a part of our lodges and share in what we do. Please feel free to contact me at any time, if I can help or encourage you in any way. I really do look forward to hearing from you. With Friendship, Love & Truth Cathy Garcia, President, Rebekah Assembly of Washington rcgarcia347@live.com Phone: (360) ~ From your Theta Rho President ~ STEPHANIE WIGLE Also in August on the day before my driving test, my brother is getting surgery done on his right ankle due to his bones fusing together. This is a good surgery for him as he will not be in pain walking on it.his other ankle is already mostly healed! But it still is a bummer that he has to go through this process yet again. This summer has been real busy for me, but I have loved it and had so much fun! I can t wait to visit clubs and have fun at other events of the Order as well in the next coming months. In Happiness Through Service And in F., L. & T., Stephanie Wigle, Theta Rho Assembly President Of Washington & Oregon Back To School Time!

SEPTEMBER, 2017 THE Washington ODDFELLOW 5 From the desk of the Assembly Secretary LET IT RAIN! Dear Brothers and Sisters, The Summer is almost over and we certainly had a warm and dry one. I didn t think I would ever wish for rain, but let it rain, let it rain. I hope everyone is ready to get back to work in your Rebekah Lodges to get what needs to be done. MEMBERSHIP I know that you are all tired of hearing about membership and getting the word out in your communities about our Order and what we are all about. There is a new Membership Program that will be sent out to each lodge. It MARCIA PRESLEY contains some new ideas about how to get new members and ideas on getting your lodge name out in your communities. I hope that each and every one of our members takes the time to review the ideas and help with this new program. If we ignore this problem, there will come a time when we will be no more. SPECIAL DATES IN SEPTEMBER September holds a couple of special dates pertaining to our Order. Wednesday, September 20 is the 166th Anniversary date of the Rebekah Degree of Odd Fellowship and Sunday, September 24 is the 132nd Anniversary of the Patriarchs Militant Degree. Why not have an Anniversary Party to celebrate these anniversaries and had some fun doing it? AS ALWAYS, I LEAVE YOU WITH THIS Yesterday is a dream, Tomorrow but a vision. But, Today well lived, makes every Yesterday A dream of happiness And every Tomorrow a vision of hope. Look well, therefore, to this day. When I was initiated into the Ladies Encampment Auxiliary of Washington, I had no idea that I would be elected to this position so soon. I still have a lot to learn about this Unit of the Order, but with your help, I will get er done. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your help. I hope I can live up to your expectations. Thanks to all of the Matriarchs who agreed to take the appointed offices of the Grand Ladies Encampment Auxiliary that I asked you to fill. I hope that the next year will be a year that we will be able to add to our membership and accomplish what we start out to do over the next year. MY PROGRAM FOR MY YEAR AS GRAND MATRIARCH My Motto: Bee You The future beelongs to those who beelieve in the beauty of their dreams. We will not build walls, we will build bridges. My Emblem: The Honey Bee My Flowers: Clover, Lavender and all Wild Flowers My Colors: Red, White and Blue My Songs: I Beelieve, Love Can Build a Bridge My Hymn: In the Garden Scriptures: Isaiah 40:31 But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. Project: Sunny Sky s Animal Rescue Hospital, located in Puyallup. C. Allan Reitan, Grand Patriarch of the Grand Encampment of Washington, has chosen this same project, so we will have a joint project this year. In Faith, Hope and Charity, Marcia Presley, Grand Matriarch of the Grand LEA of Washington We continue to donate backpacks to the local school for children in distress. Our Representative to Grand Lodge, Ray Martinson, came back with a good report. We are looking forward to working with the new Grand Lodge Officers. 10 10 THE Washington ODDFELLOW SEPTEMBER, 2017 In Napavine Trinity Rebekahs #179 AVERY BUSY SUMMER INDEED! Welcome back from vacation. At least most of you had a break. That is never true for Trinity. We have been very busy during our break from meetings. On July we worked the Interstate 5 south bound Toutle Rest Area. Then on the July we held our community sale at the hall along with the Funtime Festival on Saturday the 15th. We served breakfast and also lunch. On Friday Elayne Novotny, Linda Dean and Eileen Wideman were the hostesses. On Saturday breakfast started a 7 a.m. and lunch started at 10:30 a.m. A big thank you to Catherine Luurs for her excellent grill work. Lots of pancakes and burgers were served. Our day ended with a very sad phone call from Sister Retta Winslow notifying us that her mother Delia McNelly passed away. Delia was a 61-year member. She also played a large roll in the community. Delia was the very first Napavine Princess in 1955 and it was real fitting that she was called home on Napavine Funtime Festival 62 years later. Our love and prayers go out to the family of Delia P McNelly. Trinity members helped with the graveside services and will be draping our So. Tacoma Rebekahs #160 Greetings Brothers and Sisters. It has been a while since we reported, so here we go. Our Noble Grand has been keeping us busy with little projects. We made Valentines for the Odd Fellows Home in February. In May and June we made Mother s Day and Father s Day cards and sent those off to the Home in Walla Walla to be distributed. March had us having a potato bowling contest. Noble Grand Joanne had the members split into two groups and we tried to knock over water bottles with potatoes. You can t believe in what direction those things roll everywhere but straight! In May we had our Friends Night and members of a few lodges attended. Our Brother Dave Delony was in charge of games. We had fun with golfing, relay races and food. The lodge picnic was canceled due to lack of attendance, but we ll have our picnic during the first meeting in September. Speaking of our first meeting, we will be initiating a new member. Plus we have another application to read for reinstatement and I hear through the grapevine that there will be another two applications presented. We are certainly growing and it s great to have new members and the chairs filled. Continued on Next Column Charter during our first meeting in September. She will be missed by all so very much. Trinity has plans for another Potato Bar/Bingo Fun Night on Saturday, October 7. Also, our Christmas Bazaar will be on November There is lots on the table to keep Trinity Sisters out of trouble and working hard. It is with a heavy heart as I write this add on that we have lost yet another Sister. Sister Patricia Harader passed away on August 31. She was a 42-year member and was very active until her family had needs for her to be home. Her health started to slow her down. She s always been in our hearts and thoughts and now her family is in our prayers for them to heal and hold on to the memories of (Mom) Sister Pat. See you all at our District #8 Meeting on Saturday, October 14. In F., L. & T., Alberta Luurs, Secretary UP AND COMING EVENTS Our District Meeting is on Saturday, October 21. Once the meeting is over we ll be having a Spaghetti and Bingo Night. More information is on a separate posting. That s it for this letter. Enjoy the pictures! Fraternal Hugs, South Tacoma Rebekahs

11 SEPTEMBER, 2017 THE Washington ODDFELLOW 11 Brothers and Sisters from Olympia IOOF Lodge #1 and Ruth Rebekah Lodge #17, along with members News from the Capital City Olympia IOOF Lodge #1 & Ruth Rebekah Lodge #17 AN EXCITING SUMMER! Wow! What an exciting summer! Our dear Sister Cathy Garcia was installed as the President of the Rebekah Assembly of Washington and our Associate Brother Kelly Hughes was installed as Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Washington. Congratulations to you both! Our lodges are very proud of you. A big thank you to the Jr. Past President Kathi Picanco for a wonderful past year. You did a great job and we are proud of you, as well! The Odd Fellows and Rebekahs participated in the Lakefair Parade in Olympia in July. We had a nice group of friends and members who walked behind the banner. We were well received. We are looking forward to next year and everyone is invited to participate. The Seafood Fest, held on August 26, was at our Park. There was tons of food, great fellowship, fun and games. We had our annual chowder contest, as well as two new contests the first annual horseshoe tournament and corn from other lodges, marched in the Olympia Lakefair Parade in July. hole tournament. Winning teams were presented trophies. All the kids participated in all types of fun games three legged race, water balloon toss, egg race, etc. Each child was presented with a candy award. We raffled off baskets of which the proceeds went to the Theta Rho Housing Fund. Here s some news about a couple of our members. Don Hepp, PGM, is in a memory facility. He loves to have members visit him. Jenny Cole is in a home, but is doing well. Her eyesight is gone, but she recognizes voices. Many of our members make sure to visit our Brother and Sister on a regular basis. They love to hear what s going on in our lodges. The lodge is looking forward to the Grand Master and President s Reception in September. We hope to see you in Bucoda. Fraternally Hugs from the members Of Olympia IOOF Lodge And Ruth Rebekah Lodge #17 In Wenatchee Tempest Rebekahs #114 and Prosperity IOOF Lodge #301 At our June meeting, a special election of officers was held for Prosperity Lodge due to the passing of our Treasurer Charles Goll. 12 12 THE Washington ODDFELLOW SEPTEMBER, 2017 Washington OddFellow P.O. Box 377 Buckley, WA Change Service Requested NON PROFIT ORG US POSTAGE PAID #8 ORTING, WA A look at our 2017 Grand Sessions Continued From Page 1 GENERAL OBSERVATIONS HOTEL The entire first floor of the hotel was newly renovated. Regrettably not all our members were able to occupy those rooms, partly because the hotel made room changes resulting in shifting of our members and in some cases members were in neighboring hotels. That said some of our members were given discounts on their stay. Complaints included warm rooms (AC), distance from the conference rooms, late room refreshing, and in one case bugs in room. MEALS Much of the hotel staff was new this year, including the hiring of a new chef. Meals received high praises in presentation and variety. We received high compliments on quality and taste, as well. Most members, based on their comments, prefer the buffet style of serving as was for the Theta Rho and All Branch Banquets. This is a point we may want to address for the GP/GM Dinner Installation. In previous years soda was available for the Theta Rho, but not this year per request. ROOM SETUPS As stated earlier, much of the staff was new and as a result conference rooms needed closer supervision than normal. However, the staff was quick to adjust throughout the day as needed. Conference attendees did notice that the hotel appearance was improving. It was also noted the staff worked hard to satisfy all our requests as quickly as possible. GENERAL On Tuesday evening after the Joint Installation of Officers, the Yakima Lodge sponsored a Pie and Ice Cream Social at their lodge as a fund-raiser. About 43 members enjoyed great homemade pies. Our members always look to the opportunity to attend. Finally, we have two more years under contract with the hotel ( ). Dates for our 2018 Sessions are June 22 through 27. HOTEL COMMENTS There were no written comments, but they truly enjoy our patronage. Also, they provided apologies for room inconvenience to our members. Prior to Host Committee leaving, we locked in the rooms for next year. They can t wait to have us back next year. They thanked us for our patience, smiles, laughter, and kind hearts. TEAM / SPONSORS Thanks to our Host Committee partners: Cathy Garcia from Olympia IOOF Lodge #1. Many thanks to Olympia Lodge #1 for their generous financial support. Thanks to Barb Nelson, Stu Carlson, Barbara Reitan, Jim Gallagher, Dave and Laurel Delony and the Grand Lodge, who helped collect/donate items for the goody bags or Silent Auction. Also contributing was J & I, Timberland Bank, and Home Depot. Many thanks to all the lodges which contributed something for the silent auction, as well. If we left anyone out, we apologize. We really appreciated all the help to make this a success! It was suggested that we continue the silent auction next year since it added funds to our unit heads projects. In Friendship, Love and Truth, Your Grand Lodge Host Committee See You At The 2018 Grand Sessions!
