1 Morrow Mirror M a y 1 4, Mothers, The Heart of the Home "Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the Lord." 1 Samuel 1:20 (KJV) At this time of year, we focus our attention on a special person in our life that has meant so much to us all: our mother. We all have at least one. If we were to take a poll of every child, and ask them which attribute of their mother was most treasured, I believe the attribute of godly would be found to be most precious, for it is here that we find the graces of Christ: sacrifice, security, warmth, understanding, love and compassion. While the Bible does not mention mother's day, it does say a lot about mothers and we find no greater example in all of scripture than that of Hannah, a godly mother. We say " godly" because this is the attribute most profitable to motherhood. It is not her looks, her knowledge, her social status, her wit, her friends or her wealth; but rather those graces which flow from God, the giver of every good and perfect gift. Of all the things that Hannah could become in her life, there was nothing she wanted to be more than a mother. She placed this great honor above fortune and fame. Therefore, we find this request at the top of her prayer list. When her son was born into this world, she named him 'Samuel'. Samuel means 'asked for'. The word 'mother' is a warm expression that suggests she is a nurturer to her husband and her children, and a provider of a well-ordered home. She is the "heart" of the home. According to the examples that we find in scripture, there is more to being a mother than having a baby. From the examples of Hannah, Eunice, and Moses' mother, we find the mother to be many things. But one that stands out above all others is that of being a teacher of good things. These mothers taught their children about the Lord. And what an impact it had upon their lives! If you trace the footsteps of Samuel, Moses and Timothy, you will find God's promise to be true: "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it"--proverbs 22:6. History can not erase the indelible impression that godly mothers have had upon families, towns, societies, and countries. Abraham Lincoln's mother, Nancy, died when he was nine. But in the short time he had with his mother, she instilled the virtues of honesty and compassion in her son, impressed upon him the importance of learning and reading, and sowed the seeds of his intellectual curiosity. In his later years he said, "All I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother. I can remember her prayers, and they have always followed me." The love, kindness and encouragement of his beloved step-mother Sara, whom he called Mother, also had a powerful influence on his life. After her death he confided in a relative that his step-mother had been his best friend in the world and that no son could love a mother more than he loved her. Mothers not only have an impact upon the lives of their children, but upon all of society as well. The godly mother is a blessing to all of humanity. God knew what he was doing when he placed her in the heart of the home. Indeed, the call of motherhood is great. It is a life of sacrifice that yields a bountiful reward. Lord, we thank you for godly mothers! Happy Mother s Day! Luis & Melanie Ortiz 1

She is the daughter of Billy McGarrah, who grew up in this church, and Paige McGarrah. The scholarship is funded with proceeds from the Bush Hammontree Golf Tournament which many members of this church support. The Scholarship will be awarded at a special ceremony in our Fellowship Hall on June 12 at 7 p.m. Seating for the ceremony is limited, but if you want to attend, please RSVP with Bob Brannon (big.berto@yahoo.com) by June 1. Cat Food Drive! We are in desperate need of cat food for our feral cats living in our community! There are over 20 feral cat colonies that we are currently feeding. These are cats that have been humanely trapped and vetted (spayed/ neutered and vaccinated) and then released back into their "home" or, as we refer in rescue, colony. They are then put on a "feeding schedule" where a group of volunteers take turns feeding them on a daily basis. Because the number of cats has grown so significantly, it has become increasingly difficult to keep up with the demand for food. Therefore, I'm reaching out to all of you for help! Please consider making a donation of bags of dry cat food for these furry babies! They can be placed in the hallway outside the library. If it's more convenient, I would be happy to come to your home to pick up any donated cat food. Also, if you are interested in joining our "feeding team", contact me and I can talk with you further about how the program works. Volunteers are needed! Thank you so very much! 5 Church Priorities for 2017 Over the past few months, our church governance board has been prayerfully considering the needs of both our church family and local community. The board has embraced a new structure- W.I.N.G.S. The acronym identifies the five subcommittees. W- WORSHIP (Chair: Mary Anne Brannon) I- INVITE (Chair: Pastor Luis Ortiz) N- NURTURE (Chair: Chris Hoenes) G- GROW (Chair: Becky Griffin) S- SERVICE (Chair: Doug Jewett) A W.I.N.G.S. informational bulletin board is being finalized for display in the Adult Sunday School wing. In addition, each chairperson was assigned a Wednesday Night Supper program to share more information and opportunities about their ministry. Also, the board established the following goals for 2017: 1. Increase church attendance and membership by reaching out to members who are currently inactive in ministries, worship and activities while also developing new strategies, ministries and programs to recruit new members. 2. Develop church leadership by increasing the number of active volunteers and creating training and support for new and existing volunteers. 3. Support the children and youth programs to engage current members and recruit new members. Prayerfully consider hiring a Youth Director. We will keep you updated on the progress of meeting these goals over the year. Please pray for guidance, direction and success for our ministries! If you haven t already found a volunteer opportunity, please check the new W.I.N.G.S. board for volunteer opportunities. Board meetings are open to all church members. Feel free to join us. You can always share any ideas or concerns with any of the board members listed below. As always, thank you for your support. 7 Dear Church Family, Thank you for your continued support of me for this summer working and doing ministry in Yellowstone National Park. Our ministry team of six people is working in two sites, Mammoth Hot Springs and Gardner. We will host four worship services each Sunday. We have little musical talent, but some experience in leading Bible studies. Our ministry support committee of mentors in the Park will host "Fun Mondays" for us once or twice each month. I look forward to many day hikes and nights around the campfire. Please keep our ministry team in your prayers all summer long! May God do more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us. To Him be glory in the Church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations (Ephesians 3:20-21). I cannot begin to express how much we and the people of Honduras appreciate your support. We have many of the people that we work with, throughout the villages that we support, that are in need of eyeglasses. You all are truly an answer to a prayer and we thank God for you. Missions In Action is a 501 C 3, non-profit Christian organization that has been working in Nacaome, Honduras, Central America since Through various churches and businesses we have been able to help improve the quality of life for those living in extreme poverty through many different programs, such as: sponsor program for the school children, mission teams, a feeding program in the schools, VBS, medical mission teams, vitamin and parasite treatment, donation of medical supplies and medications and simply being the hands and feet of Christ.
