We were thrilled to receive $4500 towards a Milling Machine from AMSA and $2000 from Cr Bruce Casos and Mayor Paul towards garden equipment. Thank you to all the guys who have supported the Shed at BBQ s at Jets and Bunning s recently. If not for you giving your time, we would not be able to achieve all our great work. With the high cost of electricity, we are investigating the possibility of a grant to fund Solar Power. Major Ben Johnston has agreed in principle and we will get official approval when we can. On Tuesday 9 th February, 10 members will visit the Tram Shed in Brisbane. Many thanks to Jeff Edwards for the wonderful Kitchen Island Bench just completed and ready to load. We are currently displaying some of our finished projects at the Redbank Library, thanks to Ian Weier. Card games of 500 are progressing and a singing group has shown some interest. If you have an idea and want to pursue it, just ask? We have a BBQ at Jets on 21 st February (assistance required). Bunning s Bundamba look like opening in April so will assist where we can. Our thoughts are with Debbie and Ron Bopf as they are challenged with an illness. Regards Terry

(FEBRUARY 2016) MEET SHED MEMBER Warren Lewis One of the really nice guys of the Ipswich Men s Shed, Warren is an Ipswich boy through and through. Born to parents Mervyn and Heather, he was the eldest of four children who lived the early part of their lives in West Ipswich. It was here that Warren first started schooling until 1958 when tragedy struck the family. This was the year that his father Mervyn, (a railway worker) was run over and killed by a train. Shortly thereafter, Warren s mother moved the family to East Ipswich where Warren continued his schooling first at East Ipswich and then at Bremer High School. Soon he began to prove himself to be a very able sportsman in rugby league and in archery, for which he later scored a very creditable third placed Queensland Championship title. Early in his young life however, Warren developed more of an interest in guns, a hobby which continues to this day. Whether it be with rifles, pistols or shotguns, he enjoys them all. Warren says that he acquired his first.22 rifle from a friend by swapping a radio (given to him as a present by an aunty after an overseas trip), for a rifle with crook sights. Nonetheless Warren liked the gun and enjoyed sitting at the little lake near his house, shooting ducks and other wild life when he could. The only problem was that he didn t tell his mother that he had swapped the radio, or that he had the gun, but his younger brother certainly knew and armed with that knowledge, he seized upon the opportunity to begin blackmailing Warren. The young brother pressured Warren into paying him 2 bob a week lest he tell their mother about the firearm. Warren said it only ended when his brother asked for even more money and Warren had had enough. He went and told his mother that he had the gun and her only reply? That s nice dear. How much could he have saved had he just told her the truth in the beginning? As a young adult, Warren left school to start employment with the Redbank Woollen Mills as an apprentice. He did not like the job and after a time he left the Mill with the intention of joining the army. Things did not go according to plan and instead, Warren started working at Hancock s Timber Mill in North Ipswich. From there he returned to the Woollen Mills but that did not last long. Following a disagreement with a staff member which ended with the staff member sitting on the ground nursing his swollen nose and his injured pride, a triumphant Warren took his leave and departed the Woollen Mills for the last time. The next venture for him was to commence work in a Goodna fruit shop, a job that Warren says he really loved. He enjoyed getting up early mornings and going to the Rocklea markets and after carrying 140 pound bags of potato s round on his back, he soon developed a strength and fitness that left him feeling totally alive and ten foot tall and bullet-proof. In due course however it was time to move on and Warren started working for James Hardie in Carole Park where he remained for the next 40 years. Commencing as a forklift driver, Warren progressed through the ranks to where, prior to his retirement, he spent a number of years as the distribution manager for the company.

During his time Warren has been married, but now considers himself to be happily divorced. He has two sons, Brett and Craig and has three grandchildren, Josh, Matthew and Tess. Warren is very proud to announce that his son Brett outshone him in archery and by the age of 10, Brett was presented with the all Australian Archery Championship title. Quite an accomplishment for one so young. Amongst his own achievements Warren counts having previously played tennis up to 3 times a week. He is an accomplished golfer and a shooter. He dislikes dancing, but enjoys western movies, playing video games and 4 wheel driving. Speaking of driving, Warren is rightfully proud of his achievements in travelling around Australia twice. He has also driven a 4 wheel drive vehicle across the Simpson Desert and has driven the full length of the Telegraph Track. Somehow during his busy life he has also found time to join the Lapidary Club and to do gem fossicking and he has spent time with the Ipswich Wood-Turners group, who were instrumental in bringing wood turners from around the world to Ipswich to teach their craft. Warren says that he learnt from the best and from this his interest in wood-turning grew to the point that he himself became a skillful wood-turner. Thankfully for the Ipswich Men s Shed, Warren came to us after he retired and he brought those skills with him. He is happy to pass on to shedders some of his talent and knowledge, for those seeking to add wood-turning to their own skill-set. Thank you for giving us an insight into your busy life Warren. It was most enjoyable. OUT AND ABOUT: HANCOCKS TIMBER MILL, NORTH IPSWICH Thank you Ipswich City Council and Ipswich Library for this information: Part of Pictorial Supplement in Queensland Times newspaper, 24 January 1895 (image courtesy of Picture Ipswich) Thomas Hancock senior came to Australia from Cornwall with his family in 1856 and moved to the West Moreton District in He and his sons worked as Sawyers in the Pine Mountain area and established a sawmill in the Rosewood scrub area around Cut logs were floated downstream to the mill at Kircheim, now known as Haigslea. The family moved to Ipswich and set up a timber yard in Upper Brisbane Street, Ipswich, adding to their timber business. In 1878 they took over the lease of the North Ipswich timber mill from a James Reilly. The mill was able to turn out 50,000 feet of sawn timber per week. They subsequently purchased this mill and set up a smaller mill in Canning Street, North Ipswich. In 1880 Thomas purchased land at Lamington Parade in North Ipswich along the Bremer River and set up a large mill with three storeys which would become their main office; the business now known as Thomas Hancock & Sons. This would become their head office. In 1885 the railway branch line which carried railway rolling stock from the Bremer River wharf to the Railway Workshops was extended at cost to the firm to link up with their sawmill in Lamington Parade. This coincided with a major fire destroying almost all of the original buildings at the North Ipswich, Lamington Parade mill. With easy access now to the railway line the business soon rebuilt and expanded. Timber in the log could be brought right to the mill by rail from Harrisville and Lowood and timber cuts from the mill could be delivered by rail instead of steamers and punts. The business once again held a mill, joinery and moulding plant. A Lathe department produced doors, window sashes and panelling.

By this time Hancock & Sons were well known as having one of the mo st valuable properties of its kind in Queensland. Thomas senior retired from the business in 1884 and passed away in 1891 leaving his two sons, Thomas junior and Josias to run the business. Josias Hancock supervised the iron founding, smithing and machinery branches while Thomas Hancock junior looked after the timber mill. In the same year Hancock Brothers began making furniture by machinery and fancy palisading for verandahs. Employee numbers grew to around 274 by In 1898 the business became Hancock and Gore and converted to a limited liability company in 1904 with Thomas senior s grandson, Josias Henry Hancock overseeing. Under Josias s management the company expanded rapidly. Mills were built at five locations in Brisbane and 13 rural locations in Queensland. By 1945 the company became Australia s largest producer of plywood. By 1990, the fourth generation of the Hancock family was still running the Hancock mill at North Ipswich and new products such as plywood decking were being made. In 1995 Boral bought the company and in 2011 Boral Hancock Plywood closed its doors. IPSWICH SHED UPDATE A very big month in the shed commencing with the moving of the yellow timber stand on the first day back. Lathes and electrical machines have been moved, the dust extractor lifted down from its stand and the setting up of new art areas, wood-turning zone and electrical repair shop has been completed. Well done to all those involved. Barbecues are underway for this year. Don t forget to let Barbecue Bob know if you can assist. The garden continues to produce vegetables but the gardeners need all the compost they can get. That can include grass clippings, tree mulch, garden waste etc. Please bag up clean compost and deliver it to the shed throughout the year. The garden crew thanks you for your donations (The difference between a husband and wife is psychological, One is psycho the other is logical)

VISITING OTHER SHED S INDOOROOPILLY MEN S SHED Situated opposite the Indooroopilly shopping centre and directly behind the community centre is the Indooroopilly Men s shed. A presentable shed erected by the builders of the Indooroopilly Shopping Centre extension, this building is about the size of a triple garage with an additional but attached extension for meeting room, kitchen, library, and computer room. The computer room has a number of computers and printers available for members use. The major focus of the workshop is wood-work which at the time of visiting included wood turning on lathes and work bench construction. At the back of the wood-shop is a large area where bicycles are repaired. There is a very limited amount of metal-work done, mostly being metal lathe work. This shed counts amongst its members - lawyers, doctors and chemists to name but a few, so engages in a number of activities other than manual labour. Some of these include things such as book club, computer group, walking group and ukulele group amongst others. On Fridays the shed hosts and sponsors an Open Mic evening where both club members and other locals (including females) attend to sing, perform and/or listen to others belting out a tune. Indooroopilly Men s Shed members have rostered days for various activities, such as Tuesdays - computer club, Wednesday s - meetings and guest speakers, Thursdays - wood-work. Another day is for bike repairs etc. Although there are around 100 members, not all attend daily it depends on where their interest lay as to which day/s they attend. Although reasonably financially sound and having a solid lease on their land, the shedders are hoping in due course to be able to acquire the Community Centre in front of the Men s Shed, which would greatly increase the size of the shed and the activities they could undertake. It remains to be seen whether this will occur. (You know you're getting old when your wife says, "Honey, lets run upstairs and make love," and you answer, "I can't do both"). SHEDDER S ADS (This page is available for shedders ads for such things as buy, sell or exchange etc. Submit ads to Terry or Laurie for future publication). No ads submitted at the time of publication. If You Marry an Irish Girl: The first man married a woman from Italy. He told her that she was to do the dishes and the house cleaning. It took a couple of days, but on the third day, he came home to see a clean house and the dishes washed and put away. The second man married a woman from Poland. He gave his wife orders that she was to do all the dishes, cleaning and cooking. The first day he didn t see any results, but the next day he saw it was better. By the third day he saw his house was clean, the dishes were done and there was a huge dinner on the table. The third man married a girl from Ireland. He ordered her to keep the house clean, dishes washed, lawns mowed, laundry washed and hot meals on the table for every meal. He said the first day he didn t see anything, the second day he didn t see anything, but by the third day some of the swelling had gone down enough to see a little out of left eye, and his arm was healed enough that he could fix himself a sandwich and load the dishwasher. He still has some

IPSWICH MEN S SHED INC 3A MINING STREET BUNDAMBA 4304 IPSWICH MENS SHED Inc 31/01/2016 Dear Members, As we head into a new and exciting year 2016 at the shed, we are pleased to advise that our training has now commenced and will provide members with the tools to insure they are working in a safe manner. With this in mind we will conduct a general meeting on Tuesday 19 th to outline and start the process, our aims will be to Outline the paper trail Introduce the standard operating procedures (Sop) The testing process The recording process These events will be done to insure we cover each member as best we can in relation to workplace health and safety rules and regulations Every member will be required to read and sign all SOP s and this will be recorded. Members wishing to use machines will be required to request to undergo a simple training process and their names will be listed on each machine they are tested on. Those not listed will not be able to use that machine. We understand that experienced operators will know how to use the machines but still must request the standard Ipswich men s shed test as well. Sop s will be ed as well as available at the shed for you to read and sign, we understand this may take some time but will be most beneficial to all to know the safety rules associated with each machine. The Committee.

Hi Sheds Welcome to another insurance year with the Australian Men s Shed Association. For the period 28 February February 2017, the AMSA Insurance Program will again be supported by Sean McDermott and Everest Risk Group Some takeaway points are: The outgoing year has seen a number of claims and notifications of injury. A large number of these being traumatic injuries from blade contact. We trust all Shedders are doing their part in making sure all around them are safe! Burglaries are another key highlight from the year. Burglary has been by far, the largest claims cost for the Industrial Special Risks policy this year. We remind all Sheds to be mindful of their Shed security. A number of Sheds are underinsuring, or, undervaluing the property they own. If the value of your Shed contents/building would be more than $100,000 on a replacement basis, you need to be discussing this with Everest Risk Group. When calculating the replacement, you should not be making any deduction for donated goods/volunteer time. Everest Risk Group have a policy available for the Sheds over this figure. A key change to the Industrial Special Risks policy this year is: Industrial Special Risks All claims for burglary now attract a $1,000 excess, replacing the split excess in the previous period. This has had to happen to prevent cost rises for all. We have become aware there are a number of Sheds nationwide, allowing the use of the Shed without any other person on site. This practice has to stop and is not endorsed or encouraged by the AMSA, or, Everest Risk Group. The great news is, the cost per member remains the same at $24 each. We are pleased to advise, even with claim costs rising, this figure has now been maintained for several years. We want you to know we work closely with Sean & the team at Everest to ensure we are providing enhancements where possible. It is with this, we now advise the following changes have been made; and approved, in the accepted Business Activities List Testing & Tagging of Shed owned equipment where the work is done by those holding appropriate certification Working with participants provided from external agencies It should also be noted, where a Shed is organizing a fete, market or otherwise, so long as the conditions of the below are met, there is no need to advise Everest Risk Group: Holding and/or organization of Fete s, Markets & the Like including car parking direction (not a valet service) where there will be less than 2,500 participants, no fireworks or pyrotechnics and each exhibitor would be responsible for their own insurance coverage. Regards Mel White AMSA
