1 1 Tau Chapter Delta Kappa Gamma April 2017 Volume 13 Issue 6 Educating Worldwide In this issue: Treasurer s Report Chair Reports Recognitions In Remembrance Meeting information President Nancy s Message It s spring, and that must mean it is time to meet in Eldon for my favorite Tau Chapter activity award two $ recruitment grants! In my opinion, this is one of the most important functions we do as an organization. Through recruitment grants, we are able to help young women prepare for a vitally important career, one that we have found to be rewarding in so many ways. These grants would not be possible without tremendous support from our membership. On April 8, we will recognize our Lady of Distinction and initiate a new member. We will also learn our state song and learn to find current legislative information. Our Eldon hostesses are planning a salad luncheon at which our recruitment grant recipients and their mothers will be our guests. I hope you have this meeting on your calendar and plan to attend Officers President Nancy Lewis First Vice President Betty Mudd Second Vice President Gracie Fields Secretary Sarah Porter Treasurer Paulette Fischer Parliamentarian Colleen Abbott As president, I have tried to get better informed about our society through the numerous DKG publications. There is a wealth of information that I have made available to you through links on the home page of our website. I encourage you to take a few minutes and check out what is available. One of the things I keep seeing in these publications is how important communication is to our society members (see page3). That has become my number one goal as president: to keep you informed, not only about our organization but also about our members, your society sisters. This has been a tough year for several members and their families who have been dealing with extended illnesses and the death of a loved one. I so appreciate those of you who have reached out to me and let me know about those among us who need our thoughts and prayers so that I could inform everyone else. The time we take to keep in touch is essential to our well-being. Aesop reminds us that No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted. (from The Quotable Teacher edited by Randy Howe) 2017 Delta State Convention April 21-23, Courtyard by Marriott, Columbia MO Registration form is on Meeting page on our website. Registrations must be postmarked by March 31, No refunds after April 4, 2017.

The four parts of complete communication (and DKG communication) are a message, a sender, a receiver, and feedback. For two years most printed communication from headquarters has included reminders and instruction for ALL members to complete My Profile on the DKG website. One option allows EACH member to indicate whether she is willing to receive Society communication by text or AND whether her contact information may be included in a protected MEMBERS ONLY directory. What YOU can do 1. Complete My Profile and mark the box to receive electronic communications 2. Identify dkg.org in your address book to ensure delivery 3. Use your personal address instead of your institution s So We have messages and a sender. We do not have a receiver if YOU have not updated or provided your information. YOU must take action if you haven t already done so complete the transaction of communication NOW. Now, my (sender) message to YOU (receiver) is to complete My Profile at The feedback will benefit all of us. Congratulations if you ve already done it. Does someone need your help with it? 6 6 MEMBER IN THE NEWS Carrie Martin, librarian at East Elementary is one of six educators selected as finalist for the Eisinger Teacher of the Year award. Carrie received a school initiative grant from the Jefferson City Public Schools Foundation for the school year for increasing and improving the quality of guided reading texts using picture books. She has been at JCPS since The Eisinger Teacher of the Year and Eisinger Outstanding Educator Award are named after former JCPS teacher and Missouri Teacher of the Year award winner Linda Eisinger. She and her husband, Don, announced last year they would fund the awards for the next 15 years. Winners of either award receive $1,000. JCPS teacher of year finalists announced, News Tribune, March 23, To Honor women who have given or who evidence a potential for distinctive service in any filed of education. Why Teachers Weep Then Jesus took his disciples up on the mountain and gathered them around him. And he taught them saying: Blessed are the poor in spirit. Blessed are the meek. Blessed are the merciful. Blessed are you who thirst for justice. Blessed are you who are persecuted. Blessed are the peacemaker.... And Simon Peter said, Do we have to write this stuff down? And Philip said, Will this be on the test? And John said, Could you repeat everything you just said? And Andrew said, But John the Baptist does not make his disciples learn all this stuff! And Matthew said, Huh? And Judas said, What does this have to do with real life? Then one of the Pharisees, who was an expert in the law said, I don t see any of this in your syllabus, do you have a unit plan? Is there a summary? Where are the student handouts? Will there be any follow-up assignments? Is this thematic? How will you assess this? And Thomas, who had missed the sermon, came to Jesus privately and said, Did we do anything important yesterday? And Jesus wept. Arlene Broeker shared this at the February meeting.
7 IN REMEMBRANCE Helen Schulte I had the honor of getting to know Helen when I joined DKG and was responsible for the calling list regarding the Eldon area. When I would call Helen to let her know of upcoming meetings, she would always say she would love to come but she would have to wait for the one in the spring and then she would want me to bring her up to date in respect to what was going on in the chapter. She definitely wanted to be in the know. I would send her copies of Tau Tales, and she always made references to them. Sometimes we would have lengthy conversations, just, you know, girl talk. She loved to talk about her work at the Historical Museum in Tuscumbia, and every time she would always ask, Have you ever been there? You really should go over there sometime you know. I always loved talking to Helen. She was so upbeat and full of life. Even when she went to the nursing home and I stopped to visit her one time the first fall that she was there, she was still the same old talkative Helen wanting to know about this and about that. I remember when she received her 40-year-membership pin in April Gloria, Dana, Alice, and myself went out to her house and presented it to her after the meeting in Eldon. She was so tickled and had me pin it on her housecoat. Two months later in June, I received a call from her: she wanted me to come right away and pick up that pin so it could be returned to the chapter. She was going to the nursing home, and she wanted to make sure the pin would be recycled into the organization. I did as she wished because she was really concerned this wish be carried out. At the time, and I still do, I thought what an unselfish thing to do, thinking of others at a time when she was going to be giving up everything, but that was Helen. She was a very patient, caring, someone who put others before herself, nurturing, intelligent soul. I want to conclude with her teaching hint that she wrote many years ago, when she filled out her bio sheet: Patience solves a world of problems. What a verbal footprint to leave on the minds of others. Imagine the world today if everyone put this into practice. Gracie s personal reflection about Helen Schulte who was a DKG member 51 years, Tau 37 years, and taught for 38 years To Honor women who have given or who evidence a potential for distinctive service in any field of education. 7
