2 Master s Voice T he Pillars In our February Entered Apprentice degree, we were introduced to Boaz, the left hand pillar in the porch of King Solomon s Temple. In our upcoming Fellowcraft Degree we are introduced to Jachin, the right hand pillar in the porch of King Solomon s Temple. Boaz denotes strength and represents the Earth. It is a representative of King David who showed great strength as a warrior. David offered to build God a temple, but God declined because of the vast amount of bloodshed David caused through war, and he did not want his temple to be associated with the atrocities of war. The pillar thus honors David for his faith, and is emblematical of the spiritual war against sin. In the lodge, this pillar is represented by the column of the Junior Warden. Jachin denotes establishment and corresonds to the cosmos. It is representative of David s son, King Solomon, who built the temple to establish his kingdom, and is represented by the column of the Senior Warden. Together, the pillars allude to a passage of scripture where God states In Strength shall this house be Established. They represent deity, male and female, yin and yang, and both planes on which men exists, Earth as well as in Heaven. As one pillar serves to support the other, so should we as Masons support our brothers and those in need. In many US lodges, the two pillars themselves are located in the North West corner by the Inner Door. As in King Solomon s Temple, you must pass through the pillars upon your admission into the lodge. They are a blessed sacrament, thus explaining why they were given names, and were free-standing in front of the temple and not structural in nature. The two globes of the pillars, signifying the Earth and the Cosmos, represent that Masonry is universal and unending. The lilywork symbolizes peace and teaches us to open our hearts and minds to all mankind. The network represents unity and teaches us to appreciate the beauties that God has given us. The pomegranates denote plenty due to the exuberant amount of seeds they adorn and symbolize the abundances of Earth, given by God. They teach us that our earthly bounty should be shared equally among all mankind. The Fellowcraft degree, as well as scripture, informs us of the size of the pillars. We are told that they are 18 cubits in height, 12 in circumference, and 4 in diameter and each were adorned with chapiters 5 cubits in height. A cubit is the length of your arm from the elbow to the tip of the middle finger. An Egyptian, or Royal cubit is 21, while the Roman, Hebrew, and English cubit is 18. This makes the pillars 27 to 31 tall, 18 to 21 around, and 6 to 7 in diameter. We are also told that the pillars are a handsbreath, or 4 thick, and cast hollow to preserve the archives of Masonry. Hiram Abif, the Widow s Son, cast the pillars in bronze between Succoth and Zeredathah, about 25 miles away from the Temple. Through this we know that they weigh approximately 27 tons and were cast in sections to ease in transportation. I welcome you to attend our next Fellowcraft degree and see what further light you can learn through our ritual. Sincerely and Fraternally, Brian Hartel, Jr. Brian Hartel Jr, WM Trenton Cyrus Lodge No.5 1

4 In & About the Lodge Our Super Bowl Party was a huge success with the most attendance ever. Vince Shea was the winner of the Chili Contest for the second year in a row. He also won the final quarter grand prize in the football pool for $200. Sharon, RW Jacobson s date, won second place. Lisa Megaro won the Bake Off and Brother Jose Acuna was the winner of the 50-50! Lastly, the Polar Bear Plunge also received good lodge representation with WB Ed Clementson leading the charge into the frozen waters, this year accompanied by Brother Mike Cronce with his young son Dillon and dual member WB Scott Mahan. The February Regular Communication and Official visit of our DDGM was well attended and featured many brothers in Red and Pink, as requested by the Worshipful Master. Many lodge brethren also attended the Official Visit of MW Anthony Montuori, current NJGM and the Reception of our very own RW Walter Stepek as Grand Chaplain. Congrats to Walt! Last, and certainly not least, our very own JW Tom Wilson presided in the East for his first ever opening and EA degree. Brother David Steven Nestle was initiated Entered Apprentice. Big month with another one coming. See you in lodge! 3

The last one is the most important. The eight hours a day that we re not sleeping or working are the hours that define us. Are we wasting them all on reality TV, shopping for things we don t need, or surfing the internet? Are we playing the same video or computer games over and over, sitting on the couch eating too much junk food, yakking on our cell phone, texting, or bickering? Or are we doing interesting things? Things that are good for our mind and body? Family and social things? Does anything above sound a bit familiar? It should; it is stated to all Masons when receiving the Entered Apprentice degree. It was the first tool handed to you and described as the 24 inch gauge. We were taught to make use of it symbolically for the more noble and glorious purpose of dividing our time. So how about those eight hours mentioned above for EVERYTHING ELSE? Remember your E/A DOST THOU LOVE LIFE? THEN DO NOT SQUANDER TIME; FOR THAT S THE STUFF LIFE IS MADE OF." BENJAMIN FRANKLIN charge: Although your frequent appearance at our (YOUR) meetings is earnestly solicited, yet it is not meant that Masonry should interfere with your necessary vocations, for these are on no account to neglected During your leisure hours, that you may improve in Masonic knowledge (NOT reality TV, shopping for things you don t need, etc.) So come out where ever you are! We miss you! Every third Wednesdays of the month at 6:00pm! And our meals are great! THIS MONTH WE CELEBRATE ST. PATTY WITH CORNED BEEF AND CABBAGE AND ALL THE TRIMMINGS! We will have a Lodge Clean-up Day on April 3 to spruce up the lodge for the George Washington Award later that same day. Sadly, the Teacher of the Year award will not occure this year due to a lack of response from the school district. The end of April is the Grand Lodge Annual Communication. We will be having our Annual District Dinner at the Knife and Fork on Tuesday evening. Wednesday evening either attend the Grand Lodge Banquet or a special dinner for TC5 members at Harry s Oyster Bar. Contact SW Klapinski ASAP for your reservations. We had a strong support at last month s regular communication displaying Red and Pink in honor of Valentine s Day. Our March communication coinsides with St Patrick s Day. I challenge everyone to wear as much Green as they can, and see how many Leprechauns we can have show up to this meeting.
