(919) ENTERPRIse ftjgh POINT, N,.,. 10/1M-D C v {).;, DEC 993 \ I'Police charge local man with kidnapping pastor By Bobby McCroskey STAFF WRITER Psychiatrists at Dorothea Dix Hospital in Raleigh will examine a city man to see if he can stand trial after High Point police charged him with holding a pastor hostage at a local church Wednesday. james Lawrence Whitt, 46, of W. English HIGH POINT Road, is charged with first-degree kidnapping after pastor C.W. _Mossof Green Street Baptist Church on Rotary Drive said Whitt held him with a knife against his will in the church library. Whitt was being held at High Point jail on $50,000 secured bond. Guilford Assistant District Attorney Howard Cole wants Whitt examined at Dorothea Dix Hospital in hopes that Whitt will be ruled competent to stand trial. Cole had the order signed this r:-- morning by a Superior Court judge after a hearing this morning. Moss told police he was working at the church at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday when a man came to the church. "The man came to talk to a pastor, and he became agitated when the pastor couldn't answer his questions," Capt. Ron McGuire said. "He pulled out a knife and threatened him with it. He wouldn't let him leave." McGuire said another church employee, unaware of the situation, came into the library, and Moss was able to tell her to call the police. When police arrived, the library was open and the man had put away his knife, McGuire said. He was arrested without any further trouble. Whitt is no stranger to police and the courtroom. In June, Superior Court r- James L. Long ruled Whitt incompetent to stand trial on two charges of taking indecent liberties with children. A Guilford County Courthouse employee had reported in June 1992that Whitt fondled her two daughters while near the security guard station on the first floor. Long said Whitt couldn't assist in his defense in a reasonable and rational manner. During that hearing, two private psychiatric specialists testifi~d that Whitt, a U.S. Army veteran, was a pedophile and a paranoid schizo. phrenic. Whitt's schizophrenia made him unable to stand trial, they said. Whitt has a 15-year history of Psychiatric problems and pedophilia. lie has a lengthy criminal record for charges ranging from trespassing to taking indecent liberties with minors.

CUPPING SERVICE 1115 HILLSBORO RALEIGH. NC ~ / TEL. (919) tnterprise HIGH POINT, N. C. DEC Jesus shows how to beat stress. By C.W. Moss Everyday stress abounds! It can be caused by traffic jams, poor health, worry about the future, grief, in-laws, envy, sadness, chemical dependency, loneliness, rebellious children, unresolved anger, feeling distant from God. Someone once described stress this way: "I feel like a bullfrog sitting on the freeway during the 5 p.m. traffic rush with my 'hopper' broken." Everyday stress; we're all on the same freeway here: bullfrogs with our "hoppers" broken. Whether stress is personal, spiritual, financial or relational, we can turn to the Scriptures for ways of managing our stresses of life in The Prince of Peace, Savior of mankind is our example. He remained at peace under pressure. He was never in a hurry. He was always at ease. He had a calmness about His life that enabled Him to handle enormous amounts of stress. Let's consider eight sound principles of stress management for Identification: Know who you are (John 8:12). The first way to balance stress in life is to get an internal balance of who you are. You know who you are by knowing whose you are; you are a child of God. Your were put on Earth not by accident but for a purpose. You are deeply loved by God. You are accepted by Him. He has a plan for your life, and because He put you here, you are significant. 2. Dedication: Know whom you're trying to please (John 5:30). You know you can't please everybody because, about the time you get one group pleased, another group gets mad at you. Even God doesn't please everybody, so it's foolish to try to do something that even God doesn't do! Our goal should be to focus on pleasing God; it will simplify life. 3. Organization: Know what you're trying to accomplish (John 8:14). Every day you either live by priorities or you live by pressures. You either decide what is important in your life or you let other people tell you what is most important. Preparation causes you to be at ease. Ask, "Is this really the way I want to spend a day of my life?" 4. Concentration: Focus on one thing at a time (Luke 4:32).Work on one project at a time. Be determined and persistent. Work until it is finished; then move on to the next project. 5. Delegation: Don't do it all yourself (Mark 3:13).Jesus appointed.12 men to whom he could delegate His authority. As we enter 1997,.resolve to let others help you accomplish your tasks and responsibilities. The stress maker is when you think, "If! want a job well done, I'll do it myself." 6. Meditation: Make a habit of personal prayer (Mark 1:35). Jesus made a time for prayer when He was busy. We talk with God in prayer; tell Him what's on our minds; let Him talk to us as we read the Bible. Then we look at our schedules; evaluate our priorities and wait for instructions. 7. Recreation: Take time off to enjoy life (Mark 6:31). Jesus could handle stress because He knew when to relax. He frequently went to the mountains or the desert just to unwind. You deserve a break; get some rest. Take some time off to be with family and friends. 8. Transformation: Give your stress to Christ (Matthew 11:28-30). You will never enjoy complete peace of mind until you have a relationship with the Prince of Peace. Christ can transform your lifestyle from stressful to satisfied. The greatest source of stress comes from trying to live our lives apart from the one who made us; trying to go our own way; and be our own gods. The significance of His rest is that of pause, recovery, refreshment. In 1997,give your life with all its stresses to Him and say, "Lord, please give me a new life. Replace the pressure I feel with the peace you offer." I c.w. Moss Is senior associate PIIstor al G... n street 8IIP1iSt Churcll.

StaH photo bv Don Davis Jr. Ken Schultz works Tyson for academy class Citizens earn new respect for police work By Dawn Ziegenbalg STAFF WRITER Henry Lee Jr. was reunited Thursday with a member of the High Point Police Department who had responded to a burglary at his home. This "officer" was a lot shorter than Lee, weighed ~-.;_ pounds and didn't say a thing when Lee thanked her for her help. Instead, she just wagged her cording to Interim police Chief Blair Rankin. "We want the public to know as much about us as they can," he said. Depending on the incoming chiefs opinion of the academy and the graduates' reactions, the program will most likely be offered again, perhaps in January or February, Simpson said. So far, this year's students, who range from retired citizens and and

Police dog Tyson may not have caught the burglar who fled from Lee's house that night. "But you did a good job," Lee told the Dutchtrained Malonis as he petted her back. Man and dog were reintroduced Thursday night during a K-9 demonstration at the High Point Police Department Citizen's Police Academy. As a member of the academy's inaugural class, Lee said he's enjoyed each class so far. "I don't think I could single one out because each one is different," he said. "They all have to come together as part of it." The academy, which meets in three-hour classes twice a week, is taught by different officers each session. Modeled after similar academies in Greensboro and Durham, the course is geared toward giving citizens a better understanding of what police do and why they do it. In the 15 sessions leading to graduation, students study a condensed version of Basic Law Enforcement Training given to all sworn officers. Topics range from hands-on firearm instruction, defensive tactics and K-9 training to classroom presentations on the justice system, Constitutional law, crime prevention and hostage negotiations. In one criminal investigation class, homicide detectives show students crime scene video tapes and lead them through a step-bystep process of how they solved two murders. In another session, undercover vice/narcotic officers brief students on how they make cases against drug dealers and set up raids on houses. The 20 citizens in the class must also spend eight hours riding with officers to observe them on the job. A final project asks the students to provide police with suggestions on how they can improve their work. "We want the public to form their own opinion, but we're giving 20 of you an insider's look at things so you can make informed judgments and decisions about police," said Capt. Mitch Simpson. Simpson supervises the development of the course and oversees each session. Officer Anthony Hawkins was also instrumental in shaping the course, Simpson said. The concept is for participants to learn the same things a police officer learns during training, acmanagers, may one the best advertisements for a future academy. "It's been a great insight to law enforcement and what the officer faces every day in his job," said the Rev. r:;. W. Moss, the minister of Green Street Baptist Church. Having discovered twice that his house of worship is not sacred to criminals, Moss applied for the academy as a crime victim who wanted to learn more about the judicial system. He also wanted to find ways to use his ministerial skills to help police officers, he said. Two years ago, the minister was held at knifepoint in his church's library when a man who was later declared insane suddenly became enraged with Moss' interpretation of a manuscript. A woman also in the library called 911 and police "came to (his) rescue," Moss said. Then just two months ago, masked gunmen burst into the church and robbed members while they were counting a Sunday offering. The members weren't hurt, but the robbers got away. "I had a positive image of law enforcement officers prior to this class," Moss said. "But through the class, I've seen the personal side of the officers. The police officers I've met are very committed and dedicated to their work." Another member of the class, Virginia Gregory, came to a similar conclusion long before she enrolled in the academy. As a domestic violence survivor, Gregory credits High Point's police officers with saving her life. "If it wasn't for these guys, I wouldn't be alive," she said. "The situation I'm in is what enticed me to take the class. I feel the officers do everything they can." But Gregory also said she believes the justice system has failed her. In the academy's classes that focused on court procedures and law, Gregory said she's learned some of the reasons why it's not so easy to put abusers behind bars. "But we as a people are the ones who need to voice our opinions," she said. She said she hopes to use her own personal experience, along with what she's learned in the academy, to help other woman see the importance in prosecuting their abusers. "I want to help other women, not to become frustrated, them deal with it." but to help

CUPPING SERVICE 1115 HILLSBORO /J. RALEIGH, NC / ti TEL. (919) fnrerpr.as iii(7'h POINT, N.'d MAR e need each other 2.-~ \ By C.W. Moss Nobody is a whole chain. Each one is a link. But take away one link and the chain is broken. Nobody is a whole team. Each one is a player; but take away one player and the game is forfeited. Nobody is a whole orchestra. Each one is a musician. Take away one musician and the symphony is incomplete. We need each other. You need someone and someone needs you. Isolated islands we're not. To make this thing called Christianity work, we have to lean on and support one another; have to relate and respond; have to give and take; have to confess and forgive; and we have to reach out and embrace. Romans 12 states: "Love each other with brotherly affection and take delight in honoring each other. Never be lazy in your work but serve the Lord enthusiastically. Be glad for all God is planning for you. Be patient in trouble; prayerful always." How important are you? More - "than you think. A rooster minus a hen equals no baby chicks; Kellogg's minus a farmer equals no cornflakes. If the nail factory closes, what good is the hammer factory? Just as Rodgers needed Hammerstein, you need someone and someone needs you, Since none of us is a whole, independent, self-sufficient, super capable, all-powerful hotshot, it is most urgent that we link up as brothers and sisters in Christ. Dag Hammarskjold said, "People who are worried about world issues very easily forget the smaller issues. If you are not willing to be good in the smaller circle of your family and friends, you can't do anything for humanity as such. It is better to be good with all one's heart to one person than to sacrifice oneself for the whole of humanity." Go and love, one person at a time, in Christ's name. C.W. Much of the six-page letter that Whitt sent Moss two weeks ago centered on religion, Moss testified, but parts of the letter were threatening.
