1 Nebraska March 2019 Where Strangers Become Friends & Friends Become Family! State Director s Message Rob and Joleen Baker ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!! NO MORE SNOW!!! All joking aside, we hope everybody had a safe and fun winter. We are ready to start camping again. We are having a planning meeting for the State campout. We have scheduled the meeting for March 23, 2019 from 2-4 at the Anderson Branch library in Lincoln. The address is 3635 Touzalin Ave. This meeting is open to all Nebraska membership. We look forward to seeing as many at the meeting as possible. We have a lot of work to do this year as far as getting new members. Walk the campgrounds, talk to your friends, friends of family and family to see if they would be interested in joining your chapter or one of the other chapters for a weekend. Please put National Campvention on your calendars. It would be great to see as many Nebraska campers as possible. There are still a number of positions open for volunteering. We are waiting for an updated schedule from the Chairs and once it is available we will forward it so you can see what is open and if you would be interested in fulfilling one of the positions please sign up. One position that is available is we need pickups to assist with the people movers. We tried to get one of the antique tractor clubs to assist and they have opted out. So if you have a pickup, planning on going to National, please let us know if you would be willing to help with the people movers. We would like to thank you all for your support in 2018 and look forward to another great year in See you around the campgrounds. 4 National Recording/Corresponding Officer Sue Carlsen Subject: 2019 National Awards Notice It s time to start thinking about national awards once again. We've honored several of our fellow campers over the years, and I hope we can keep up the momentum in The forms and instructions will be on the National website. Please take a few moments to review the criteria for each of these awards Chapter of the Year, individual (Citation or Plaque), Humanitarian, Lifesaving, and the Hank Nathan Lifetime Achievement Award. Our aim is to recognize folks (or chapters) whose contributions to FCRV deserve to be acknowledged. Who is that individual, couple, or chapter in your region, state or province who represents our family camping values, volunteers whenever needed, enthusiastically recruits and welcomes new members, and is often active in their community as well? Please scroll through the list of previous recipients and if you don't see their name, let's put it there! A member may only receive a plaque once; however, a second citation may be awarded for exceptional or distinctive service. There is no limit on how often a chapter can earn this award. I'm still putting together the Awards Committee, and will update you as soon as it's complete. I strongly encourage you to begin gathering information now for this year's nominees so the Committee will have their work cut out for them. If you have any questions, or need help getting started, don't hesitate to ask. Thank you for your time and help with this meaningful project. (Awards Notice and forms in full are also available from the State Directors.) State Committee Reports... June Bug. These could be Roadside Cleanup, Park Beautification, Wildlife Conservation, Forestry, Water Conservation, Soil Conservation, Conservation Education and Recycling. How about creating and entering an artful conservation poster? This contest is open to all ages. Chapter News... Courageous Ramblers This has been a cold and snowy winter. We are all ready to go camping. Long time member Mickie Hetrick is having some health issues. Please remember her and the family in your thoughts and prayers. We had a Christmas party in December. We ate too much and played card bingo. All had a great time. Hope winter ends soon. Norma Hetrick Field Director Triple F Campers C.A.M.P Report In the month of February, Triple F decided to go bowling for a C.A.M.P activity. While we did have a few people unable to bowl, most members were present for the activity and enjoyed socializing. We had every skill level play, and everyone had a great time! After we were done, we went to a local restaurant to have a meeting and enjoyed more social time. 4
5 Meeting What a cold, dreary winter we have been having! Triple F has been very busy despite the weather. As a group, we are always trying to think of different ways to give back to our local community. We decided that we wanted to help humans as well as animals. We had a Thanksgiving meal together for our November meeting and decided to focus on giving to humans for this month. We collected food items to stock the pantry of a very deserving family. We collected canned goods, pancake mix, noodles, fruits, etc. In December, we had our Christmas party with wonderful food and games. We decided to shift our focus to giving to animals and collected varying items to donate to Town and Country Animal Hospital. We collected dog/cat beds, cat litter, dog treats, etc. At our January and February meetings, our youth members Lucas Mathews and Tyler Mathews, and Haylie Baker (with help from Jessica Baker) decorated Valentine cards to be distributed to residents at Hillcrest Health and Rehabilitation Homes in the Omaha area. We will continue to give back to our local community and will keep everyone updated on our progress. Stay Warm! Mark your calendars for the State/Fall meeting!!! York County Corn Carnival - We will have a shuckin good time! More information to come as you watch the corn pop up in rows. Everyone is invited to join us in a planning meeting at the Anderson Library located at 3635 Touzalin Avenue in Lincoln on Saturday, March 23, 2019, from 2:00-4:30pm. There will also be a short Scholarship Committee meeting toward the end. Teresa Mathews, President Heartland Runabouts Heartland Runabouts met on November 10, 2018, at the Kilgore Memorial Library in York, NE. Minutes of July 15, 2018, meeting were approved. It was decided to move our December meeting to January 5, 2019, at the Exeter Fire Hall. We also decided to bring nonperishable food items to be donated to the local area Food Bank in Friend instead of exchanging gifts. We selected the 2019 Campout Schedule and hosts. Mert and Janene Feikert are discontinuing their membership with the 5
6 Heartland Runabouts due to a limited number of campouts that they could attend in 2019, but they are not leaving FCRV-just becoming "at large" members. Anita reported that Mercy Meals were looking for volunteers on November 18 to pack meals at Heartland Lutheran School in Grand Island. Anita will sign up Steve and Marcia Witmer, Dennis and Debby Hoagland and herself to help at 2:00 that day. Meeting adjourned. We went to Kerry's in McCool for a lovely lunch after the meeting. Sandy Kendall, Secretary Heartland Runabouts Holiday Gathering The Heartland Runabouts met at the Exeter Fire Hall on January 5 at 11:30 pm for our Holiday Gathering. Those in attendance were Ken and Sandy Kendall, Chuck and Peggy Warner, Gary and Linda Sanders, Dennis and Debby Hoagland, and John, Anita, NEW OFFICERS FOR THE COMING YEAR: President: Debby Hoagland, 8908 Osborne Drive East, Hastings, NE Vice-President: Linda Sander, 4320 Claussen Road, Grand Island, NE Secretary: Sandy Kendall, 2421 Sheridan Ave., Grand Island, NE Treasurer: Jessica Hoagland, 1607 W. 6 th, Hastings, NE Anita Mueller Rollin Turtles The Rollin' Turtles Camping Club set two records during their February meeting! First off, there were only 10 members present! This is an all-time low. Second, the meeting took only 12 minutes! We are looking forward to our annual St. Paddy's Day Corned Beef and Cabbage dinner at Risky's Sports Bar. And spring can't come soon enough to suit us! Broc, and Tara Mueller. The meat was provided by Sanders and Muellers with other members bringing a side dish to go with it. We collected nonperishable food items to support the local food bank in Friend which is housed at the Friend Christian Assembly church. The Friend Food Bank was very thankful to receive the food donation since their supply was low after the holidays.
