Meet the Staff - Jeff Nielsen, Senior Minister Ricky Kearn, Student Ministry Resident Jane Wentz, Children s Ministry Director Staci Kearn, Administrative Assistant My folks had a little place on Pickerel Lake in MN that allowed me to scratch my fishing itch once a year on our family vacation. The time was short and the lake was big so I tried to make sure I fished well where the fish were! the right depth, near the weed line or structure etc. On the west end of the lake we often trolled a line that we oriented by the blue house in the southeast to the boat house with the turquoise door in the north. Those two landmarks along with the depth finder kept us on the right line while the wind and current worked to take us off course. It took specific choices and actions to hold the line. In life we have to make specific choices and accompanying actions to make sure we are on the right course! We live in culture. We don't have a choice about this. We are born into a family culture, a national culture, an ethnic culture, a religious culture, and other elements influence us. Even when we don't notice culture's impact on us, we can easily drift with culture and away from godliness. We can lose our orientation to God and the things of God easily. To avoid mindlessly drifting with culture, we must have a clear target in mind and keep shifting our focus back to that target or goal. Drift and disorientation from the will of God can have disastrous impact on our lives and others. The devil constantly tries to make us feel that our decisions and choices don't really matter to anyone but ourselves. Yet deep in our hearts, we know the truth. So rather than drifting with culture, let's be vigilant about shifting our focus back to Jesus!. We shift in all kinds of ways and for all kinds of reasons in our every day world. Let s think about shifts we can make in life to stay on course with our Savior and Lord. We hit the shift key on our keyboards to emphasize things that are important. So when we think of shift, let's think of emphasizing the things that are important to Jesus in our lives. We shift our position when we are uncomfortable. So let's check our lives & see where we are out of place with the will of the Lord and shift back to his standards.
2 We shift gears to change our speed or increase our power. So let's shift to increase our passion and commitment to follow Jesus and reflect the character and compassion of Christ in our daily lives. Rather than drift, let's choose to shift! It's crucial that we keep a firm grip on what we've heard so that we don't drift off. If the old message delivered by the angels was valid and nobody got away with anything, do you think we can risk neglecting this latest message, this magnificent salvation? First of all, it was delivered in person by the Master, then accurately passed on to us by those who heard it from him. Hebrews 2:1-3 MSG let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith Hebrews 12:2 TNIV Jeff Thankfully His Jeff Please keep these requests in your prayers * Shelby Prascher *Dianna Stogdill - cancer *Brenda and David Bergstrom *EJ Robinson *Wilda Bowman Tyler Shields *Charlene Woolley *Cooper Johnson *Jen - breast cancer (friend of Tim Dycus friend) *Will (Keaton Hoffman s friend) - cancer *Shaelyn s mom *Janelle Abernathy *Christy Stogdill - cancer *Sloan Woods *Nancy Schanbacher s friend - Cancer *Our Nation s Leaders *Rod and Teresa Dorothy family *Ron Arnold *Justin Halgbewachs - cancer *Deb Bruntz, Tim Dycus sister *Sue Houdesheldt *Jan Shaw

5 Well, February is already here, where does the time go? Among the many things that will be celebrated this month is the birthday of the first president of the United States, George Washington. He was born on on well, if you look for a historical date, it will say February 22, If you asked George himself, he would have told you February 11, What??? There was a change in what calendar was being used in the United Kingdom in 1752 (thus a change in the colonies). It was a change from the Julian to the Gregorian Calendar, resulting in a loss of 11 days and the New Year starting on January 1 rather than March 25. So, because his birthdate fell before the old date for the New Year, but after the new date for the New Year s Day, his birth year was changed to Crazy isn t it. (Talk about time flying by.) What makes this even more funny to me, is that the government has us celebrate his birthday on the 3 rd Monday in February, which means the dates fall between the 15 th -21 st which misses both the 11 th and the 22 nd. What else do we think we know about George Washington? Well he was the Father of our country but was never a father himself. He didn t chop down a cherry tree, at least not one he declared he couldn t lie about. His hair was real, just powdered. His teeth were not wooden, but he did have many sets of dentures. Here is one more thing about Washington. Close your eyes for a second. Picture George Washington got it? Pretty sure the picture you have in your head looks like the picture on the one-dollar bill. This is how most of us picture old George, so what s the problem? Neither George nor his family ever liked that portrait of him. He felt the dentures he was wearing at the time made his lips look puffy. I would guess it would be like someone taking a bad picture of you (i.e. you in braces with bad acne or perhaps a bad driver s license photo) and putting it on your tombstone and on billboards and the sides of busses, and everyone remembering you (forever) looking just as you did in that one moment in time. What s my point? As a Christian how will you be remembered? What legacy will you leave behind? Will people know what you stood for? Have the people around you been changed by the fact you are here? Do they see your Christian walk? Will people remember you spoke about Jesus or just puffy lips? Time flies, it s gone before you know it. Let s be a light shining in this dark world. --God Bless Jane Wednesdays at 6:30 to 8 pm Kindergarten through 5 th grade
