3 The Community Congregational Church United Church of Christ 141 N. Bennett Street P.O. Box 62 Southern Pines, N.C Our mission is to encourage participation in fellowship activities of the Community Congregational Church. Our commitment is to support various community organizations through distribution of income received. The membership is open to all men of the Church and friends who share our common goals. 3
4 The emblem of the United Church of Christ is based on the ancient Christian symbol known as the Cross of Victory or the Cross of Triumphant. Traditionally, this symbol - the cross surmounted by the crown and all of it atop the orb - signifies the kingship of the Risen Christ over all the world. The orb, representing the world, is divided into three parts to signify Jesus command to his disciples: You shall be My witness in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth. For the United Church of Christ, this emblem, rich in the traditions of the past and alive with hope for the future, is particularly appropriate. For this reason, there appears on the perimeter of the emblem both the name of the Church and the text: That they may all be one. From the History and Program of the United Church of Christ,

9 CHURCH HISTORY In 1598, the Separatists fled England after enduring religious persecution by the newly formed State Church. They settled in Leidon, Holland, for twenty-two years; but, though they were treated well by the Dutch, these people treasured their English heritage and desired to find a place where they could worship according to their own conscience, free of political and ecclesiastical control. In 1620, the Separatists chartered a small craft, named the Mayflower, and set sail for the New World. Because of their journey across the Atlantic in search of a new home, they became known as the Pilgrims. They established a colony at Plymouth, Massachusetts and a new, Protestant denomination with the formation of the Congregational Church. The rule of faith in this Church was the Holy Scriptures; and each member was given the right to read and interpret the Scriptures for him or herself, each coming to God in his or her own way. Thus, the Congregational Church was established as a pure democracy, with each member extended the privilege of voice and vote. Because the responsibility for religious faith was placed squarely on the shoulders of the individual and not the institution, it was necessary to educate each person sufficiently that they could read the Scriptures for themselves. Thus, the Pilgrims established a system of public education specifically designed for that purpose and open to all community members regardless of sex or social station. Later, the Pilgrims established the institutions of higher learning, Yale and Harvard being two examples. The church s leadership in the area of individual freedom and rights was the first step in securing such privileges for all Americans granted through the Constitution one hundred and fifty years later. 9
10 CHURCH HISTORY CONTINUED The Congregational Church in Southern Pines was established on April 5, Immediately, it became a church home for all Protestant denominations and, in 1925, was re-named The Church of Wide Fellowship. In the 1960s, the church became affiliated with the United Church of Christ, which was formed through a merger of the Congregational Church and the Evangelical and Reformed Church. In the middle 1990s, the name of the church was changed to reflect both the denominational background and the community atmosphere, and so is the name today, The Community Congregational Church. Theologically, the church walks in the tradition of the Pilgrim Fathers in that each member retains the right to come to God in his or her own way. Thus, the theology of the members runs the gamut from conservative to liberal. Politically, the church is voluntarily associated with the national body. Thus, the members own the property and are not subject to outside control. Praying for the guidance of God, we continue to serve in faith, in hope, and with love for our neighbors until that day comes when God s Kingdom is established upon the earth. 10
